V8 torque is the "best bang for your buck" I think. There is also the added benefit of not having to re-invent the wheel so to speak. LS2 ect is a documented and "bolt-in" approach. The only niggle is logistics for us UK guys. I should think its the solution that would tick most boxes and require the least downtime too?
I would like to trumpet the humble 924 iron block. Its proven to reliably handle over 300 WITHOUT the benefit of modern fuel and ignition systems (Lemans 1980 in 924 GTR spec). I know stand alone adds to the cost but the motors themselves are bullet proof and cheap to build. Simply weld in two 924 engine mounts and get busy on the exhaust/inlet fab.
A more travellerish solution would be to buy a good S2 for say 2k, pray to the gods that the motor is still strong then transplant the engine, cooling system and transmission...plonk the remainder of the car on the bay and wait 8 months to claw back the lion's share of the 2k outlay. Been there, done that but left with the feeeling that the M44/41 (S2) lump needs....hmmm, boost lol!

it's a shame the timings a bit out. Well quite a bit out actually !! I sold this some time back for £800 retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=FSW&action=display&thread=60411 Had all kinds of trick bits which included a bigger turbo among others (as I later found out from the chap who bought it for the engine) Kind of explains why it was so stupidly quick and spat flames on the over run God I miss that car.

An Audi V8 sounds good. The strut towers are quite limiting on width mind you. If it can fit, seeing a 928 engine in one would be interesting .

the 1jz is a snug fit but looks factory when fitted the 1uz fits,as ive done it and sold it last month sr20 would fit well

Interesting thread. The 944 is a great basis for conversion, but the torque tube thing complicates.

Ha, i posted this almost 2 years ago! I ended up spending about £900 and Turboing the n/a engine. Its now in 330-340hp spec.
If i was to do a conversion it would be a S4 B5 engine/ audi V8/ or s2 20v. There is a detailed thread on fitting the I5 and an audi/porsche 924 parts bin will sort it.

as sumpcracker says a audi 20v 5 cylinder turbo...would be a cracking swop... or ive always like the audi 2.7 bi turbo engine...
