Hi Adrian, ^^That's exactly how the boss in my Cinq is done, centre section cut out of the original wheel, drilled and tapped for aftermarket wheel.

I did this on our Daihatsu Mira using the centre chopped out of the stock wheel welded into an aftermarket boss, in this case a Nardi. I did machine the two parts to fit snugly together before welding them though but I guess you could do it without. Just make sure your welds are good!

I was thinking of fitting a Nardi wheel from an Mx5, Do you have any piccies of the Boss? Also how did you get the horn ring to work? Cheers Adrian

steel ones are unbelievably easy to do, even without a lathe. ive done loads over the years, for various cars. a drill press, a couple of hole cutters, a bit of 1/4" plate and some exhaust tubing and you can make one from scratch very easily. even though i now have a lathe i still often make them the old fashioned way, as its a lot quicker.
ile take the one off my pickup in a bit and take some pics of it, its easier than explaining it all.

the one fitted to my scimitar, is essentially just the splined section off the original wheel, chopped off - the the splined section on an aftermarket hub adaptor chopped off flat with a grinder, and the two welder together!
Must've taken all of half an hour to do?

I did it the simplest possible way, cut center section out of old wheel, drill holes that fit the new wheel, some 6mm nuts and bolts, and cover everything with a piece of car air duct, done! You won't get a better pic since the center cup is siliconed on... ;D Here's some pics how my friend made a boss/spacer for his w124 This is where i just drilled holes and mounted it, but the merc needed the wheel further back. Pretty self explanatory i hope, the bolts which are welded in place go through the remains of the old wheel, which is seen in the previous pic. The upper part, which mounts to the wheel is tapped for the bolts which go through the wheel. Welded together. Clothed in leather and fitted in place

Hi Guys
Thanks for the ideas,
But i`m still not sure how to sort the horn ring? (mine was molded into plastic around the boss part which i had to remove to get to the boss)
Cheers Adrian

On the 6 bolt fitting wheels (like momos) the horn push button fits to the steering wheel, not the boss, and usually comes with the wheel, so if you used that size wheel it would be easy enough.
I'm not quite sure how you'll go about getting around the fact you've removed the horn ring, I guess you could re-mount it on the back of the boss using a strong epoxy or something? It'll just need a single wire to go to a spade terminal on the back of the button.
Of course you could leave the horn on the wheel as decorative and just mount a button on the dash somewhere for the horn.
