May 1999. I'd just turned seventeen. My burgeoning love of old motors was beginning to focus itself irreversibly on Dagenham and the Blue Oval. I bought this issue of Classic Ford: That Escort on the cover represented everything I wanted. The bubble arches, the Super Oscars, the pure balls-out aggression of the thing. That cover shot burned itself into my mind - the archetypal mkI; the yardstick by which all other Escorts would henceforth be measured. So I was pretty excited to bump into my childhood hero in a leafy clearing yesterday. Looks like the old girl is well. They say you should never meet your heroes. But that's bullsh!t.

Nice story that, with a happy ending!
I remember seeing a pale blue Mk I with bubble arches every day, just down the road from me in Aylesbury. I was about 17/18 too and had just bought my Herald. If I'd seen the Escort first, my garage might look very different today!

I can remember the 1st 2 Classic Ford magazines I bought! The 2 cars that imprinted themselves on my brain forever were a very very low Mk2 Mexico Replica and a peppermint green Mk5 Cortina 2door with a 24v Cosworth and S1 RS Turbo wheels! I absolutely loved it!

Crikey, that's a blast from the past!
Great to see it's still about.
