Do spitfires have a mechanical or electronic rev counter?
Any other cars you can think of with individual gauge units that would have an electric rev counter that could be used in a different vehical.
All the aftermarket stuff seems to be really expensive, or chav spec.

hachi.uwhost4.net/DSC07169.JPGI have got this one, it's a leftover from a japanese (and thus for me useless) dashboard, which I raided for parts. It's an electronic, and has 3 wires going in (ign+, gnd and a signal from the coil). Don't know why it points at 1000rpm when it's not in use though... I've got the complete dash still here, so if you want the plastic piece that covers the whole part with it, you can have it too. yours if you want the light at the bottom is for the handbrake and is lit by a seperate bulb in the panel.

Cheers for the offer doctor, I'll keep looking for something that is a stand alone unit rather than integrated for now.

this one claims to be from a Spitfire and electronic. I was always taught that generally speaking a 'rev counter' would be mechanical and a 'tachometer' would be electronic. No idea if that's true though. Have you tried just searching for Tachometers made by Smiths and other manufacturers from the era you want to pillage from?

Porsche 924 N/A or Turbo rev counter: 80mm, 3 electrical connections 0-7k, simple as, made by VDO, cheap and reliable. Just depends on whether is suits: black face, white numbers orange needle. It's designed for use on the RHS of the dash in the steering wheel so the renage runs form zero at the 4 o'clock position to red line at about 10 o'clock IYSWIM.
Other than that anything with a rev counter fomr the 80's shoudl do.

Spitfire rev counters can be mechanical or electronic, it depends on the year of the car. Later cars, eg Spitfire 1500 are usually electronic and as Aaron says, later Dolomite ones are also electronic and are the same size.

Yeah 1500's were electric and MkIV's and back were mechanical...
I have a mechanical one kicking around from my engine conversion Spittie, if you need?

we used to take them out of all sorts of scrapyard cars, triumphs, jags, rootes cars, etc etc, make sure you get one with the right amount of cylinders for your engine though, they usually just need a live an earth, a feed for the lights and a feed from the neg side of the coil. not so many in scrappies these days though.

The one Ben posted above looks identical to the one in my 1850 Dolomite, definitely electrical.

I managed to pick up quite a nice Yazaki 52mm rev counter at RRG09 for the Merc after looking for something that wasn't all tacky with gaudy lights and stuff. It's got a selector for 4, 6 and 8 cylinders. Finding the right gauge is tricky, I suggest perusing an autojumble or two.

Mini ones are electronic too and the rev counter bit of the three clock dash is a separate add on. Dolomite ones are nocer looking thaough and easier to use as a stand alone unit.

This. Keep a look out on Ebay for Yazaki ones. They're not really sought after like Smiths/Jaeger gauges so tend to be much cheaper. I've an 80mm one I got from aceadvice years ago in the Oxford and picked up a 52mm one for the Hillman.

I got lucky with the tacho for my FD- it was calibrated for a 4 cylinder engine, but taking the back off uncovered a calibration trimmer. Seeing as the curve for a 1, 2, 4, 8 etc engine are the same, it was adjustable to read half what it used to, and thus read correctly for the 8 cylinder.
Most electronic tachos can be adjusted in some way or another. I tweaked a TIM one to work on my Fiat which read only off one coil and was therefore a 2-cylinder engine as far as the tach was concerned. A bit of mathematics to calculate the correct resistor, a bit of swearing and it worked just fine until the car went to the scrappy.

Thanks for the help guys. I also had a look a at some 70's motorbike units that looked like they might do the job too, but obviously had the red line marked rather a long way round.
I've just found and bought super S tacho dash insert, which is just plag and play (and fairly nice looking, if plain early 90's nissan oem is yer thing).
So now I don't need to be creative with finding something cheap enough to cobble up as a separate unit. Which is a bit of a shame really.

Most of the 80's fords have a seperate rev counter, its just screwed into the panel, you could take one out and mount it in a beer can or something? Heres a Mk5 Cortina one out of its panel, the mk4's look more classic with white letters and needles.
