Hello. Recently been fantasizing about building a low rider. Either a pickup, mk2 granada estate or a merc w123 wagon ;D. But how much is a hydraulic system including installation. I would'n t really wanna hop it really high but I would want it to be quite a quick system.
Alternatively how much is an air ride system?

Airride isn't quick I don't think - nowhere NEAR the speed of Hydros. I'd LOVE 'bags for the Golf

ahem... how long is a piece of string... it all comes down to what you want from it at the end? Do you want something you can get in and rag about daily, or do you want something that is rarely gonna see the road? From what you've indicated by choice of car,pickup- what sort? b2000 sort of thing or vw caddy? Granny estates are pretty easy to do,as are merc 123s. the issues with 123s are relocating the rear shocks as there's not too much room. Cost wise a basic hydro kit is similar to a basic air kit,but you'll need to do more to reinforce the car- adding those extra batteries in the back sure puts stress where manufacturers didn't intend it to go.. You'll be looking at minimum £1100 for either (not including the batteries for hydros) Go to someone reputable. I'd love to do a mazda b2000 on air... Oh and darren w...come see my scorpio move at a show..its on air and will blow you away

I think Ravern claim they can convert most cars to air for around £1500 on their website.
Air can be quite quick I believe but you need an air storage tank in the boot and big valves. I believe air is also higher maintenance.

Something that could be driven a lot but probably not daily. What I really want is a newer ford ranger supercab on air with big chrome wheels!

Well if you're at the pod 2 weeks from now you'll see the old girl.. MWF, for any reasonable moves with air you need a reservoir tank and a decent 100%duty cycle compressor. The great thing about air though is you can fit the tanks anywhere, unlike hydraulics..so if you wanted a gasser style chrome tank stuck out below your grille, you could,or you tuck several smaller tanks along frame rails,or in the car. Or make a feature of them in the boot. As for maintainance, from owning and building several cars i would say they're about equal, although my air system rode slightly better (cos there wasn't 2/3 tonne in the boot)

Don't the really fast airbag systems run on nitrogen? I must say I'm drawn more towards air rather than juice because of the ride you get - it's still pretty well behaved.

I've just upgraded mine to run nitrogen in addition to the engine driven compressor. You can also use CO2,helium,and scuba tanks (my original plan), but nitrogen is chepaer than most of them and doesn't freeze the valves like CO2. Its not just about what gas you use, its also to do with reservoir size, valve size, line size, actual system pressure and valve location. With hydros, its about voltage, pump heads, and when you get really into it, spring tonnages and line sizes.

You could do worse than buying my old w123 coupe. It only has 1 slow pump in it at the moment on the front wheels only, but for a couple a hundred quid it could be changed to front/back/side/side either with another pump or just valves - oh and some back rams of course.
£900 As is - 6 months or so MOT, no tax.
Will post pics if my stupid server ever comes back online...

I've been looking on ebay. There are various second hand air parts that might easily be adapted. There's a complete two bag system for a Lincoln for £150 for instance. I'm going to do some digging.
