I'm going to look at a 1.6 diesel Mk1 jetta tonight. If i decide to buy it it'll be a rolling project. One thing that I quite fancy doing is to fit a 1.9 tdi out of a late mk3 golf/vento. Either a 90bhp or a 110bhp. Is it possible? If so how difficult/not difficult is it? What will I need? Obviously the engine, gearbox, loom, ecu etc but what about engine mounts etc? Any help is most appreciated.

should fit without too much probs, its the AAZ engine you are talking about isn't it?, not the "red i", as they mean loads of wires and brains....

AAZ for the win - 75ps but lots of torque, and a lot less mithering to fit than something like a 1Z (IMHO). There is even a bracket on the inner wing for the preheat fuse box ;D
Best way to do it is buy the engine and ancilleries (sp?) and sit them next to the Jetta then decide what needs swapping over. You may have clearance issues at the back where the turbo is but you might be fine.
The blocks are the sameish so you shouldn't have too many problems as CC ses - do it!!

Yeah I think its the aaz out of the mk3 golf. Although I was thinking of maybe the 90hp version out of the late mk3's and early mk4's, but if the aaz is a lot easier I'll stick with that.

Something like this has been a long term dream of mine - only with the 1.4tdi engine rather than the 4 cylinder. I'll never do it but I can dream.
The best car I ever owned was a Mk1 Golf, and the best all-round engine I've ever owned is the 14.tdi in my Polo. While you could argue that a 2001 Polo is the closest you'll get to a new early Golf without buying a CitiGolf I'd say it's got too lardy by far even if it shares the same dimensions and ancestry.
74bhp doesnt sound like much but coupled with a car that weighs under a tonne I think you could create an extremely lively machine with 70mpg plus fuel economy.

It's the torque in a weasel rather than the bhp Plus the AAZ is tuneable - just ask Simon at Brickwerks in Huddersfield.

the 1.4 tdi thats in the polo's and lupo's etc is a 3 cylinder.
What I want to build is a reliable retro. Something that I can drive down to the south of France etc in comfort and without using to much fuel. However I also want it to be fun to drive when I need it to be. Obviously there are going to be compromise's but I thought a 1.9tdi would give me the best of both worlds.

i have no I'd if its will fit ..BUT.. the 1800 rp engine in my passat is a quick motor. only rated at 66kw (90hpish) it pulls really well even on my big car. I'm sure that would fit ok and its uber reliable too. (oh curse word, thats done it!) they are also soooo cheap cos nobody wants them cos there are noo tuning parts available.
Really good engine with nice simple single point bosche injection. you can buy a who car for £200 so makes good sense. it is petrol but in a light car you will get 40+mpg easy i expect. i can get just over 30 if a drive like an undertaker.

I was considering buying a whole but very rotten scirrocco and transfering the engine over, but with the Jetta already being diesel I kinda wanna keep it like that.

Diesel for the win! If it's different to what other people do, or even more importantly someone tells you not to do it, then do it!!! FTW!

There is a guy on the ClubGTI forum that has fitted a modern(ish) TDI engine to a Mk2 Golf, not sure on the details but if you have a search on there you'll find plenty of info. It does sound like an excellent project, good idea!

This Caddy: Has a later turbo diesel lump in it... I know the owner reasonably well and although we didn't talk technicalities when I asked him about it he said it was a straightforward job ;D It seems to shift quite well an' all! I can find out more if you like, I think he'll be joining up shortly anyway but he doesn't get online much

, My little diesel bubble has burst . Went to view the Jetta yesterday night and its just to much work for me. I could manage with the front wings and doors needing replacing. But it also needs a plate on one of the door shuts and the drivers side rear arch corner where the arch meets the sill needs welding, plus it needs a plate on the chassis. I was gutted! Its a canny little car really. Only 3 owners from new 79,000 miles. the interior was near perfect condition. Its never had a car stereo put in it its still got the little tray thing instead. the little Jetta

Yeah its just I felt sorry for this little one and wished I could save it. Gotta feeling the guy who's bidding on it is gunna either part it out or hopefully fix it up a bit.
