The car phone saga............. Part one "A lunatics attempt at getting 90's tech in a 22 year old car to work (Motorola 8700)" So as per earlier post The 1st owner spent winters in Spain and the phone was probably left in the car in higher heats than the UK would experience - the case was very brittle - the flip front had been broken and the screen display was hardly readable when ever you needed to add a code to top it up using a code entered on the key pad and eventually I couldn't top it up at all I found a second hand one with BMW logo (which meant it had the right firmware inside it) on that well known auction site and got it for a reasonable price Good news with in a few minutes it's accepting charge and has a readable display I then needed to find a credit card sim in "Std Format" (credit card sized but not with a not a nano or micro sim but a full size std one) Vodaphone worked before so went looking for one of those and found one Put the sim inside the phone (semi inserted here to show how it slides in) Bingo - connects to Vodafone - then says "unregistered SIM" If I try to register the phone Call "17298" Or if I try to find out the phone number to register it press *#100# it tells me "Emergency calls only" So I contact Vodafone Customer Support - Should be easy right

Continuing with the fixing Now with an MOT Mrs BC has decided that I shouldn't need to spend any more money on the car (already bought the tyres so good there) - I'm supposed to sell it now - this means from this point on I have to be far more careful the old Mrs BC currency exchange rate won't cut it....... Elimination of bongs Number plate light bulbs replaced - they were actually working but the glass on the bulbs looked like shadow chrome (stock item ;-) and were not purchased at the same time as I bought some cleaning materials from the local motorfactors - oh no not at all) Then a job not on the list (you knew there would be didn't you) The engine cover has always annoyed me it never has locked on - the little pegs that pop out and lock into the mounts had worn out or broken - one of the rubber rings was missing - another job which I'd not fixed since I had the car Luckily Will had a cover on his 540 so he donated it to the cause in exchange for beer However the covers are different but I could use the parts This was mine - you can see the missing rubber ring and the clips do look a bit iffy Remove the rubber rings then the sound insulation can come off revealing the clips that hold the pegs in the cover Remove the clip and the locking pin comes out Made a set of 4 working ones out of 8 (4 in each cover) Fitted back on the car it locked in nicely - result Next was the rocker cover bolt covers - I only had three - somewhere in the world there is a pile of these things - I have no idea where they go but they have legs and walk Luckily Will had a couple of spares on his 540 so he donated them to the cause in exchange for beer I think I'm going to have to get very inventive now!!!!!

BC - not sure if anyone has actually asked this, but how will you decide who gets the car? Will it be based on how quick someone replies with a deposit when you post its ready or some other way, there's obviously a good few waiting in the traps for it I think he mentioned somewhere up above that the buyer has already been chosen - one of the early adopters before the rebuild took place! What rebuild...........

Will it be based on how quick someone replies with a deposit when you post its ready or some other way, there's obviously a good few waiting in the traps for it Youβll have to take this reply with the intended humour in it I could have a list of people who enquired about the car I might have marked them all out of 10 for the following categories 1. Approach style - quality of communication 2. Posting history on here 3. Reason for interest in the car 4. Order of PM arrival As a result I may have a list (in order) that I will work down when itβs ready to go The RRβr in pole position knows they are but with lockdowns and movement restrictions Iβm trying not to end up being inflexible with regard to collection Mrs BC thinks it should have gone already (not helped by my old SLK going last Friday - if that got collected why not the BMW?) I have explained that there are still a few jobs I need to do and as we are in lockdown I can do them during the week Iβm not going to give away a full tank of fuel or pay the DVLA for a months VED and not actually use the car All sensible reasons which have kept her calm Downside is I am not allowed to spend more money on it But thatβs where the exchange rate comes into play

The red car is automatic which may, or may not, relate to what you were saying about superchargers. The way I'm looking at it is primarily that I will learn a lot about how they come to bits as I strip the red car and remove the bits I think I will need. I will also be able to use the engine to mock up fitment in the Singer, albeit without the gearbox / transmission tunnel modifications Therefore, when it comes to time for dismantling the 'actual' donor car I should have a much better idea of what to expect. The theory is sound. The 5 or so years difference in car age and reality may well be a different story though. The basic engine - block mounts gearbox connection etc are all same (M111 engine is an M111 engine regardless) My old one is only a facelift of the early car - architecture is the same - it was just bolt on bits like bumpers, mirrors and skirts that changed to be honest

You bought two of them!!!! You know the superchargers and boost processes are completely different? Perhaps, but the scrap value of the cats is approximately the same - and very close to what I paid for the second car Well played Is the red one an Auto? It's been off the road longer than my old one has (August 2016) It was the right price and may (or may not) have the longer propshaft on it. I will find out later. Worst case scenario, I will have a spare bare engine if required as well as options around ECU's, sensors etc. No real intention of altering the black cars running gear or set up - just couldn't say no to a second one that was so local. Amazing you go hunting for one and end up with two on the drive OK the early cars I think were 5 speed not 6 speed and have a bigger 65 charger that runs only after certain rpm (clutch controlled)

(I have a Opel/Vauxhall history - sill covers are designed to hide the fizzing metal underneath from view - only when you remove them (or they fall off) do you realise then is no metal left to re-attach them to) - whenever I get a new car a very early task on the list is to buy all required sill cover clips - remove them check that metal is still present - remove years of dirt and refit Actually on reflection I've not been truthful in the post above What you do after removing the sill covers on an Opel/Vauxhall is find the trim clips are NLS (no longer serviced) and you stick the sill cover back on with a bead of sikaflex top and bottom and then when it does fall off you pretty much know it's time to scrap the car I is slightly amusing that Lotus (when they produced the Lotus Carlton did exactly that - never bothered with clips at all - stuck the sill covers on with sikaflex) I thought I'd better clarify that

Obv Still waiting for tyres bit the list is there to keep me focused 1. Dump the water masquerading as coolant 2. Replace the last 3 hoses that are as old as the car 3. Refresh coolant with 6L of BMW Antifreeze and deionised water 4. Replace wiper blades (ordered today from BMW) they passed but aren't great 5. Replace the brake fluid - 8 years old 6. Recharge the AC 7. Fit tyres when they arrive to refurbished rims Plus the bong issues - she really is bloody annoying Looked at the car - I have a list of jobs still to do so lets do something not on the list - cos I am idiot and well replacing the number plate bulb would have been the sensible next task......... One thing has annoyed me for year - partly because it was "self inflicted" and partly because it really annoyed me at the time and still does The sill cover has a crack in it................ If it sat nice I could live with it but it doesn't - it looks like an ugly overlapping crack where the two surfaces just don't want to meet ever again Now ages ago I bought one of those plastic welding things that sinks a bit of metal into the plastic because I had intended to fix it So first thing was to find it - that task went well Then strip the sill cover off - and realise that you would need some new clips to fit it back Luckily I have some of the right clips from previous sill removal in my spares box. Annoyingly I clearly used all one one type and have no spare left!!! (I have a Opel/Vauxhall history - sill covers are designed to hide the fizzing metal underneath from view - only when you remove them (or they fall off) do you realise then is no metal left to re-attach them to) - whenever I get a new car a very early task on the list is to buy all required sill cover clips - remove them check that metal is still present - remove years of dirt and refit With the sill cover removed - and I was amazed there was metal behind them - good metal - with paint still on it - really should take a picture in the daylight!!! Sorry I went somewhere else there - anyway time to try out the "never used" clever kit OK it's not perfect - you can still see it's cracked but it's not a gaping crack with two halves refusing to meet anywhere close I do however need some new clips (that I don't have) to put it back on...... I tried to re-use the originals but they really are a use once and throw away

This should have been a reader rides. On reflection you are right but it started as an "any interest in this" thread and kinda spiraled out of control as is the case sometimes I did mention at the start I rarely sell cars - I tend to have a long term relationship with a car an then when it comes to the point that the costs/borkage outweigh the value of the car I'll break it for parts This one got saved because I am idiot - I should have transferred the plate years ago but I didn't because it was at the back of my mind and time - well time passes fast doesn't it? Anyway there are some things still to do yet - stuff that I had planned to do but was back of the list priority - in fact the next job wasn't even on a list - just something that really grated on me.......

Fuel computer fixed with a reset all values - time and date set as well Now to change the number plates - well remove my plate and then spend all evening in the garage searching for the original plates - give up and order a new set from the internet My garage is a total tip............ But I found them saved me Β£22 so that's good right Annoyingly they aren't the original dealer plates - I think at some stage they were replaced during a reg transfer after it's previous private plates but hey ho they are the ones that I got with the car back in 2006
