Friend of mine has had a few xc90's and has had a couple of gearbox issues. His cars do get a hard life so its not totally unexpected. From driving his and being a passenger in them they are a very capable car when everything goes right. The gearbox problems haven't put him off buying them & this was after he had to change the box on the last one.

We had a PT cruiser for a while & it wasn't a bad car at all. Wouldn't set the world on fire, it was a 2 litre auto so quite underpowered, but did its job.
Only real reason it got moved on was it wasn't getting used as had bought the Honda.
I still have a hankering to get another but finding one that hasn't been driven through halfords and has every chrome effect add on stuck to it is getting harder as time passes. I liked the styling of the PT cruiser from the day I saw a freshly released one on the motorway all those years ago.
There is a Sprite 400 serving duties as a shed at my inlaws house. They bought it new in 1972. Doubt it will ever get used as a caravan again. Keep getting told how they used it ever year for holidays & my other half has a lot of memories of helping put the awning up.

Before I use hydrate 80 I will always mechanically remove as much corrosion as possible. Then a treatment or two of Bilt Hamber Deox gel to get to the areas I couldn't get to mechanically.
I would never just use hydrate 80 without some pretreatment of the corrosion.

Another vote for the Bilt Hamber products and Hydrate 80. Been using it myself for a few years now. Really happy with all the bilt hamber products I have tried.

Over the years I have been a member of more than a few car clubs of varying types ranging from one like "Club Retro Rides" through single make multi model down to single make single model type clubs.
Some of the clubs are all about "willy waving" & who has the best/fastest/most polished car & are full of brand snobs, are very closed shop and cliquey.
Some of the other clubs appeared on the surface to be really helpful but in my experience can be spoiled when a certain group end up using the club, forum as a example, as a platform to promote themselves & getting help or advice can sometimes be harder than it needed to be.
I have now started to avoid single make internet type clubs as most of the time as a question about faults for example will most of the time end up being pointed toward the "club suppliers" which is fine if money is no object but does become a issue if the "club supplier" is charging double the actual cost from everywhere else. don't get me wrong I will support specialist suppliers where I can but when a propshaft joint through the club supplier is what it costs to buy 2 elsewhere I struggle with that.
I am a member of a single make car club currently and it has its pro's and con's. I like the insurance discount my membership gives me. I like the club magazine. The other aspects of the club are just not so great for me sadly.
That is one of the reasons when "club retro rides" was announced that I joined as I have got more information on this forum over time & I might not post a lot but do enjoy reading and picking up advice from other peoples posts and threads.
"Club Retro Rides" has a mix of different cars and people from all backgrounds which in my view is one of the things that makes it so much better than all the others I have been a member of over the years.

Belt wise I purchase Mirka over anything else - the cheap stuff is not even worth attempting to try - you should be able to source these via E Bay / Amazon etc but make sure that you know the width & length of the belts that you require - there are various sizes depending upon what machine you have Thank you that's just the answer I was looking for. I have the silverline power file, it arrived earlier, which takes 13mm x 457mm belts. There was a pack of silverline belts included but I don't give them long just by looking at them. Could be wrong though. I will have a look for some Mirka belts tomorrow.

Was just about to ask about power file recommendations as got a few small areas that need attending to but access is a little tight.
From the recommendations above its looking like the cheap Silverline Silverstorm power file is the one to go for as don't have access to a compressor for air power so going to have to be a mains powered power file.
From the above advice its best to get quality abrasive belts over cheap abrasive belts. Any recommendations as to where to buy them or which brand type to get?
There seem to be loads of abrasive belts sold online with prices all over the place. I don't want to end up getting a load of poor belts that are going to make a pain of a job even harder.
There is already some Bilt Hamber Deox gel & Hydrate 80 on the shelf for after its got it as clean as it can be & if it needs some new metal adding, which it does in at least one area, it can be cleaned up prior to welding.

Grease gun recommendationsLaters

As a little follow up on the grease gun subject. Came to needing to grease something. My good grease gun nowhere to be found. I know its in one of the sheds but in which one I have no idea. My normally reliable cheapo grease gun just didn't want to play ball at all. In fairness had it for more than a few years and I have had my monies worth by quite a margin. Went to same tool shop and picked up a mini silverline one handed grease gun for £8. After talking to the guy behind the counter he produced a small box and said save your time and effort get one of these locking grease gun couplers. The coupler is the same as this one for sale on amazon. www.amazon.co.uk/uramiracle-Grease-Coupler-10000PSI-Fitting/dp/B07Q6QHMN7Total cost for the new grease gun and locking coupler a massive £17. Quite why I haven't bought one of these locking coupler things for the grease gun before is beyond me. Makes life so easy. Overall I am not overly worried about it lasting as I cant see me using more often than every 6 months or so but does say it comes with a lifetime Guarantee from silverline.

Its a shame it didn't reach the goal but there is nothing to stop you trying again at a better time of year.
I am more than happy to pledge again when you do decide to give it another go & maybe in a better position to offer a little more than the last pledge as xmas is always a time of year where money never seems to go very far for me with outgoings being the biggest part of the month.

Not a bad choice of wheel Dan. I always went with a 5 spoke design on all my previous w202's. I do like monoblocks on the w202 shape but I could never warrant the cost of them either.

Looking good. I will have to have a root round in the shed as pretty sure I still have some w202 bits in there. Nice to see its one of the early w202 with the full sized glove box too. Great too see its a 220 as it always seems to be the 180 that are the tidy ones for some reason.

Only rust my c200 sport had was around the electric aerial mount on the rear wing. Other than that it was a really clean example. Only reason I moved it on was the sport suspension was quite firm & the 2 litre engine just didn't suit the car at all.
The 1997 c280 that replaced it on the other hand was a facelift example with quite a bit more rust than the earlier car. It was a fun car & made a superb noise but overall I think my best w202 was the c250td I had.

That looks good from the photo. Pre facelift being a early one. Looks a lot like my first w202 too(mine was on a M plate too).
From my experience the earlier ones can be better than the later ones when it comes to rust.

That's a very good spot. Looks clean, low mileage and one owner. Hard to ask for more and I'd doubt there's better to be found for the money. If it's not suffering from rust, it's great value imo. I was thinking the same with the one owner and mileage. I had a look round one for sale locally late last year & it wasn't half the car that one looks. I only had a look as it was local & really regret letting my c250 go. It had more mileage, was showing a couple of the known rust spots, round the boot lock and front wing/bumper join plus it was a gold colour I wasn't so keen on. They were asking a lot more than the one on ebay.

Nothing wrong with any of the suggestions but as has been said a car is a very personal thing & what some love others hate.
I have a thing for the Scimitar GTE & have owned them on and off since I was 17, I am in my mid 50's now, getting a good one isn't hard but will cost. The cheaper ones will all require some level of work, some a lot more work than others.
A car needing a bit of work is better for me as it lets you get to know the car & also lets you make the car your own. Others want to buy a car that's totally done. Depends on what you want the car for and I suppose the skillset you have yourself.

I have a old Wanner grease gun that I inherited from my father. I also have a cheapo unbranded local tool shop grease gun.
The Wanner grease gun does a great job but is a rigid type and for certain things it can be difficult to use depending on the position of the grease nipple. I bought the cheapo grease gun as it came with a flexible tube rather than the rigid metal on the Wanner. The cheapo grease gun does seem to do its job but I must admit it doesn't get used very often and is sat in the toolbox drawer for occasional use when I cant use the other grease gun due to access etc.

Ive been driving for 35 years & have owned 28 cars.
Out of the 28 cars 17 have been my daily drivers. 4 of the 28 were weekend/fun/spare cars. The rest were bought to use as donor cars for one of the kit cars or to use as parts for mods.
Out of the list I still own 3.
