Happy New Year to all. I am hoping this year is better than last year. I was diagnosed with throat cancer in the latter months of last year so the year was never going to end as my best year ever. While the cancer is quite advanced it is still localised luckily.
This year has been the strangest new years day ever.
Went for my first session of radiotherapy today. Got another 29 sessions over the next 6 weeks along with 6 sessions of chemotherapy. I know the effects and side effects of the treatment are going to be hard going & I have been told to get a hobby that is as immersive as possible & to set myself a reward for when the cancer is beaten. They suggested a holiday as the reward but I told them I had already decided on my reward for when the cancer is beaten.
Immersive hobby is easy as still enjoying making stuff with the 3D printer.
As for my reward to myself we were looking at getting EV as the family run around but after all this I have decided that I want another Mercedes. Preferably 1990-2010 era & hopefully a V8. Not worried if its not a AMG as a V8 E class is still a quick -ish car but a AMG E55k would be nice.
Effects/side effects could last for quite some months after treatment ends so got plenty of time to save for my reward.

Back in 1992 I was so close to buying a Quantum saloon, I even drove up to Aberdeen to test drive one at a Quantum agents (Grampian Heritage Cars) Nice car, fast, comfortable, well finished, if you didn't know you would have thought it was a production car rather than a kit. Then life, family etc interfered and that idea got knocked on the head. How's this for a coincidence, the day after reading your update I was clearing out a cupboard and came across the brochures and the 1992 price list/order form and photocopy of a 1991 Which Kit article on the Quantum, yours if you want them ? I'm in the process of scanning them, so I'll stick some pics up on a bit Only just seen your post. Interesting I have a couple of the single sheet brochures but not seen that one before. I will send you a PM.

Bit of a well overdue update on the Quantum saloon and its lack of progress. As with a lot of Quantums the headlamp lid hinges were showing signs of wear. When originally built QSC only used a small brass hinge for the headlamp lid which when it wears and stretches that causes the headlamp lids to not sit level with the bodywork and they are usually loose and rattle when bad. The ones on the saloon were not that bad but did decide it was something that needed attention. The hinges are pop rivetted to extension plates that are then bonded & laminated to the nose section and the headlamp lids. After quite a lengthy search we managed to find some brass hinges the same size. We had to buy a few sets to get a pair with as little play as possible. There will be a redesign at some point but with delays and other projects taking too much time we went with putting it back as it was just with new hinges. Turned out ok as the lids are now nice and flush with minimal movement. Next job to be tackled was the multiple old alarms. Non of which worked. Was decided that reaching under dash was getting us nowhere so dashboard was removed. Only took just over half a hour to get the dash out and with dash out & that not only confirmed the fears of a few different alarms but also confirmed its time in Spain as one of the old alarms had a instruction manual taped to it along with a hand drawn diagram all in Spanish along with the name and address of a garage in Spain. Once all the old alarms were out that left a lot of loose wires so was decided to unclip the lot and go back to the original loom & start again with the new alarm and central locking controller while adding extra wires for the electric boot release & power and signal cables for the car audio setup that is a few more steps down the list. Looks a lot worse than it is and once the extra wires have been added its all getting wrapped in loom tape and secured nice and tidy before the dash goes back in.

With the trailer and container being Hercules Hobby it always had quite a expectation to live up to as the tamiya truck models are a enjoyable build.
Yes they hadn't accounted for the trailer using twin wheels rather than super singles but can see why they went with twins as the trailer didn't like to stand on its own with the legs down when I tried as set of super singles on it. The twins sort of suit it now they fit.
The tamiya 40ft container has a bit of a reputation that its not the easiest build, the tamiya sides and top are moulded in 2 parts per side/top and getting the join nice can be fun apparently. Had that in my mind when I was building the 20footer but overall it went ok and its given me a insight as to the correct path to follow when building the 40foot version.
I made sure there was a route for the trailer wiring to take so its as hidden as possible & used the same colour setup as my reefer trailer so all the trucks and trailer lights work as expected.
Totally agree the number of people who spend a age adding every extra to their truck that they can physically mount and then tow a totally stock trailer without even bothering with lights.
I do need to add a little weight to the container to improve its look on the trailer and the way it rides. The leaf springs are quite compliant but with the container weighing very little it makes very little difference to way trailer sits. Luckily there is a nice chamber under the artificial floor in the container that will get a few bits of lead strip added.
Now the trailer is done I need to get on with the grand hauler & get that one finished.

After far longer than expected the 20ft skelly trailer and container are finally finished. Trailer was painted and wiring loom done quite quickly once I got motivated. Getting the container done took quite a bit more effort than expected as it decided it wanted to fight me at every stage. Once I got the sides and top cut out it quickly became apparent that they are moulded from far thinner material to the original tamiya & the sides/top easily distorted between the mounting screws. Being smaller than the original tamiya, 20ft size instead of 40ft, I hoped it wouldn't be a issue. Ended up reinforcing the top and sides where they mount to give the container a little more rigidity. Next issue after assembly and painting was the decals were badly printed/faded so had to go on the search for some new decals. Decided to stick with the maersk branding as the container had already been painted and I have a original 40ft tamiya container to build at some point so thought I would do both containers as maersk containers, instead of the maersk sealand decals that came with the 20ft container kit. Overall I am fairly happy with how its turned out.

Cant help with any parts sorry but from my searching for bits for my car recently some mk2 fiesta parts are rarer than you would ever think they could be. I was shocked at how hard it is to find some parts I thought would still be common and the prices. I can recommend Shane Baker at SB Parts. He specialises in Mk2 fiesta bits and got more than a few bits off him recently. He usually has a lot more parts available than he lists on his website. www.sbparts.co.uk/

Scimitars - why so cheap?Laters

I have had scimitars on and off for about 35 years. In that time had ones that ranged from project cars to minters. For me there are a few things that let scimitars down compared to other cars from the same period. The interior plastics let the SE5a & SE6 onward down. There are repro parts to replace some of the parts now which does help but the interiors can feel very low rent if the plastics have aged badly, which most can.
Sold my last one a couple of years ago. Prices for them have been on the rise slowly for a few years but the better cars have taken a big jump in price over the last couple of years. I sold my last GTE as I got a offer that I couldn't refuse & had already got my eyes on something different. In the couple of years since I sold my last scimitar it has sold with the last sale taking place on eBay & the sale price being over twice what I got for it. I thought I had done well getting what I got for it.

Always had a soft spot for these. They were just quirky enough and for some reason flew below the radar with a lot of people till the later models came out.

A bit of a update due to getting a bit done to the trailer project that I started a few years ago. Its a 20ft skelly trailer for a 20ft container & is a Hercules Hobby model as Tamiya never actually made a 20ft container trailer or container. The tamiya container trailer uses super single type wheels and tyres where this uses dually axles & this is where the trailers issue starts as there was very little running clearance in the wheel arches and with the suspension which caused a certain amount of binding of the wheels and it wasn't a good roller. When I originally built it the binding/clearance issue soon became apparent but as I couldn't see a easy fix at the time it got put on the shelf and forgotten about. Well till this week. After catching the dreaded lurgy I decided it had sat there & gathered dust far too long. It was stripped of the axles and suspension in the hope I could resolve the issue The issue was quite quickly found this time round. The wrong axle tubes provided with the kit which didn't provide any clearance for the dually wheel set up. I had a choice I could search ebay for the axle tubes that would offer clearance for the daully wheels or could get the dremil and needle files out. Easy choice took the free option & if it didn't work would buy some new axle tubes. All was reassembled & this time around everything worked as it should. It was time to take everything apart again as I had already decide when I first built the trailer that I wanted it painted a typical container trailer colour and wasn't leaving it black as they come. Got it all in primer yesterday. Today it got its final coat of colour before reassembly. No photos of the paint today as its been banished to the garage for the evening as the plasticoat paint I have used is quite strong smelling. I will update with more photos and the final assembly as things move on. I have already added holes in various places for the wiring for the lights so it will be a fairly easy case of making a light loom for the trailer and adding some LED's to the rear lights. Along with the 20ft trailer I have also got a grand hauler that the kids bought me as a xmas gift a couple of years ago. Thats been sat unfinished as got sidetracked after I had built the chassis & painted the body but just never got around to finishing. Once the 20ft trailer and its container are done I will be moving onto the grand hauler. One amusing thing is the 20ft trailer is actually shorter than the chassis length of the grand hauler.

I really rate the Honda HR-V and CR-V. We bought a 06 CR-V as a car to keep for a couple of years but that didn't go to plan as its been here over 7 years now. If its fitted with the dual pump 4wd system its worth the expense and time to do a dual pump (rear diff) fluid change and flush. Cox and all the Honda dealers sell a kit of the correct fluid. As the fluid ages it can cause a few strange issues when turning at low speed.
I test drove a 5 door HR-V when we were looking for our current car but ended up getting a CR-V as with both dogs and both kids it was a little cramped in the HR-V rear seat.
I can't see us getting rid of the CR-V anytime soon as its such a useful car & its only down side is the 20mpg around town (2 litre automatic).
Your HR-V is a superb colour & so much better than the normal bland colours.

Just caught up with your thread Rich. Some nice work there looking really good. Especially from what it looked like originally its quite a transformation.
I can never make my mind up with the wheels on mine so left them alone for now. Hoping to find some scale chrome full hub caps for my Scania as a sort of retro style mod rather than the usual route.
Just been on with a 1/14 trailer project thats been stalled for a few years due to fitment issues as I got the dreaded lurgy so what better time to try and get the project moving again. I will update my trucks thread at some point over next few days with some progress photos.

Superb thank you that's the sort of feedback I am looking for. Could push to the cost of AP racing master cylinders if I needed to but would rather not & its looking like their own unbranded master cylinders are more than up to the job. Plus for less than half the cost of a single AP racing master cylinder will put a couple of the unbranded spares on the shelf for if they are needed.

Just getting to the point of getting the Quantum back together and the used servo I fitted last year, that replaced the original servo fitted when I bought the car, has decided to go the same route as the original. The servo is as fitted to a Mk2 Fiesta XR2 & is a getting to be a quite rare item. The original servo had quite a bad vacuum leak due to the large diaphragm having a split in it. I can get a seal set for the servo but its missing the large diaphragm with no equivalent diaphragm available. There is the option to replace the servo with a different type. Most use early mk1 mondeo (pre abs) or a early ford KA (pre abs) servos but it does require a little fettling to make them fit. With both the above servos not being as common as they once were and when they do appear for sale they are far from cheap plus they are all getting on in years too. I came across a pretty much bolt on option which removes the need for a servo made by Compbrake. www.compbrake.com/The item in question being either of these. www.compbrake.com/product/ford-fiesta-mk123xr2-brake-bias-servo-replacement-pedal-box-kit-hydraulic-dual-cylinder-kit-b/www.compbrake.com/product/ford-fiesta-mk123xr2-brake-bias-servo-replacement-pedal-box-kit-hydraulic-dual-ap-cylinder-kit-b/From what I can see the only difference between the above two kits is one uses unbranded master cylinders and the other uses AP Racing master cylinders. Has anyone experience of Compbrake parts & their quality? If the difference in price between the unbranded master cylinders and the AP Racing master cylinders wasn't as large I wouldn't think twice but the AP racing master cylinders add just over £200 which would pay for more than a few sets of the unbranded master cylinders? Anyone got any thoughts on going with the unbranded master cylinders or do I bite the bullet and get the AP racing? Also welcome any other thoughts as to should I shouldn't I use the bias brake setup. As far as my insurance are concerned they are a lot happier me going with the bias brake setup than using a non original servo & adding the compbrake bias brake setup adds nothing to my premium.

I ended up buying a Dewalt 899 as my previous unbranded just wouldn't cope with the job in hand.
Borrowed a Dewalt 899 to get the job done & by the time it was time for it to go back to its owner I had already bought my own as was really impressed. Quite why I didn't by one sooner I don't know as its night and day compared to the unbranded one I had before & is so much quicker and seems to just get the job done with less effort.
I bought mine as separates buying the charger and battery separate as it was considerably cheaper than buying it as a package. Didn't get the plastic case for it but they did throw in a dewalt branded bag that it lives in when not in use

I have a Fly Sky wheel controller too but mine is well used as it was my everyday knock around controller for a good while & keep that for the rc cars & bike.
I use the car light controllers as bought 5 or 6 from the local model shop when he was closing down along with a few other random rc activated switches and mixers for literally £10 for the lot. The rc car light controllers are gt power ones too so will be giving one of their truck modules a go at some point. My merc only has the extra spotlamps fitted on the cab roof so no real need for anything extra plus thats the only running truck I have at the moment as others are still at the chassis built but working on the body level. I do want to redo the merc at some point as the paint job has ended up with few marks on it after a few years use and being moved around to various events over the years.
The grand hauler is not getting any extra lights other than the stock ones so that doesn't really need anything special either.
The scania on the other hand is a ideal candidate for one of the gt power bluetooth modules as that is getting a good few extras some which will need controlling. I will have a better look into the gt power truck lighting controller when the scania gets its turn on the bench. The last of the upgrades arrived a few months back its shocking how long some of the european rc truck parts makers can take so long to supply some of their parts. Great quality though so worth the wait compared to the cheap knockoff ebay parts specials.
Just ordered some supplies to get on with a couple of truck related unfinished projects over the festive break, grand hauler to finish, 20 foot skelly trailer to finish and 20 foot container to cut sides, assemble & paint. Will update my truck thread when I get the boxes out of the cupboard and make a start. Also want to redo the tamiya reefer trailer as its satin silver at the moment and have been thinking of changing that to a chrome effect finish as its been satin silver for quite some time.

Not sure how I missed this thread. Well bought, there are the odd good priced truck/trailer out there but they are not as common as they once were. I wish hurcules hobby would release a american style truck as that would be a perfect base for a duel style truck especially with a tank type trailer.
For removing the paint on the ones I have restored or helped people remove "gone wrong" paint jobs "De-Solv-it Graffiti remover" has worked with good effect. I have always wanted to do a rat rod/duel style truck but never got round to it as yet.
I am one of the very few who use wheel/trigger controllers for my trucks. I never really got on with the stick controllers for any surface based model. Going back to when I was racing 90% of racers were using stick with the wheel radios being in the minority. I know its not that way with racing anymore but I have not come across anyone using a wheel radio with a truck at any event I have been to other than me.
The wheel radios I have are quite varied ranging from a really quite basic tactic wheel radio, that has a 3rd channel thats got programmable points so perfect for the gear change servo, to a computerised carson 3 channel wheel radio that I use with the merc. I have doubled up on the 3rd channel to also control the spotlights on the cab roof. The carson has a 3 position switch for the 3rd channel so ideal for the gearbox with the spotlights being set to latch on or off at the same point as 3rd gear. Seems a complicated setup but works well and cost very little as already had all the bits.
The cvt type gearbox I helped someone with was very disappointing and I thought it was backward step compared to the 3 speed. It was a couple of years back so they could be better now.
One of the mods I do to all the trucks I own, plus a few I have helped others with, is to change the motor for a much higher turn motor. I currently use 80 turn motors as that helps with the excess speed of the gearbox. I also add a smaller pinion to the motor to reduce the top speed and make crawling and reversing more controllable. To fit a smaller pinion all you need to do is enlarge to motor adjusting slot slightly and make the hole where the motor nose goes through the gearbox plate slightly larger. A lot of people just say use less throttle but any transmitter/speed controller only has a limited number of steps for control & reducing the size of the pinion lowers the top speed and gives you access to all the throttle steps instead of limiting it to reduce the top speed. You can buy a kit with a smaller pinion and modded gearbox end plate but its easy to buy the pinion and a small amount of work with a dremil and you have the same for very little cost.
I just modify a normal rc car light controller and make up my own lighting loom as I dislike the tamiya MFU setup & the rc car lighting controllers work well for their cost. Plus by using a suzzie setup to power the lights on the trailer it means I am not having to chop anything about as I am already making the lighting loom.

When you think what will be the easiest of jobs turns into a slightly bigger job. The nice new Airtec rad is still sat in its box awaiting fitment due to the lower mountings being self tapping bolts but the upper mountings are nuts and bolts but could I reach the nuts with the nose on? Time to take the nose off for access which I knew could have been a difficult job as more than likely was last removed/fitted about 30 years ago when the car was built. I expected rusty bolts that were going to need grinding off as others had found. Luckily they all came undone very easily apart from the one that snapped off. I had to destroy the mesh grill to get access to the top bolts holding the nose so will have the remake new mesh grill when assembly time comes. Already got a roll of alloy mesh thats more or less the same type as the original anyway. The reason for the leaky radiator quickly became apparent and I am not sure how its been holding coolant so well and does look to have been leaking for quite some time. Certainly had moneys worth out of the radiator and it might explain why it was running a little warm. On the very lower edge of the nose there was a small amount of damage visible if you looked close enough. From the inside the damage is nowhere near as bad as feared & is a nice easy fix that will be done while the nose is off. Added job is replacing the snapped big head type bolt that snapped and will remove the rusted out square spot lamps & replace them with some new ones that include DRL. In two minds to replace the amber front indicators for clear while I have things in bits.

More than welcome to join in on ATS? I don't play ETS2 or ATS that much online but used to play a lot with truckersmp on my old gaming pc. I am a member of VTC but never played online since getting my new gaming setup as my last old gaming pc died of old age in the middle of the first lockdown. Keep meaning to get the drivers for my old Logitech wheel installed on this PC and get it set up on ETS2 and ATS. I had a good few hours logged on both games with a lot of progress/garages/drivers but decided to go for a clean start on both games with the new new PC. You should update the thread, I think people would enjoy and update. I’ll be jumping back on ATS soon too, I’m also quite keen to try the convoy mode. I will get some photos taken of the project progress. It always takes me a age to finish any model as I always get side tracked or find something else that I must build. The Scania chassis shown in the other thread is still pretty much exactly the same as the kids bought me a grand hauler kit & I have helped build a few American trucks but never had my own so decided to make a start on my first American truck and promised I would do a out of the box build as that is holding the Scania up waiting for parts. The OTB build idea did not go to plan put it that way. I will update the thread as it would be good to see what others think of my idea of getting rid of the chrome and changing the colour. I am wanting to give the convoy thing a try but there is always something else that needs doing these days.

I've been building Tamiya trucks and trailers for a while. I wont repost my photos but here is a link to a earlier thread with one of my trucks. forum.retro-rides.org/thread/202074/1-14-rc-trucks-trailersMy collection is slightly larger now than in the thread. Hercules Hobby do a fairly limited range of Tamiya cloned trucks and trailers. I have helped with the build a of a few Hercules Hobby clone trucks and trailers and they go together as well as the genuine tamiya except for the screws are a little soft and a poor fitting driver will strip the heads. Plastic wise they are very much the same. The plastic does feel a little oily from the box but I always wash all plastic parts before assembly so no problem. The Hercules hobby models do come with a more suitable motor than the tamiya kits and also have ball bearings included which is a nice touch. I am currently finishing a Hercules Hobby 20 foot skelly trailer and container. The quality is good especially for the price and its one model tamiya don't do so if I wanted a shorty trailer my options were limited. Currently have 2 tamiya trucks partly finished. Nearest one is a grand hauler that is currently having a custom led setup and loom made so it can be finished. As usual I am debating a major change for the truck. The paint is 1970's ford metallic purple & thinking of changing all the chrome parts to either gold or copper colour instead of silver. Nice to see some other ETS2 and ATS players on RR. Was wandering if it was just me.

Since it arrived one of the first things to try and fix was the poor running. Its fitted with the later tldm round top carb which can be a pain from past experience. The carb was fitted with a service kit and all the diaphragms were replaced along with all the rubber fuel pipes, using genuine cohline fuel hose, so that should make things better. It did but something still wasn't right. After more checking there was a quite large air leak on the inlet manifold which a new gasket between inlet and head and tightening the nuts/bolts helped fix. Again a little better but still something not right. After more checking the brake servo was still working but had quite a bad vacuum leak and with my hand vacuum pump I struggled to hold a vacuum. A used servo was found which still has a slight vacuum leak but was better than the original. XR2 brake servos are becoming hard to get and a full seal kit can't be found. I can get all the seals bar the one I need for both servos. At some point I am going to take the plunge and change it to a twin master cylinder bias brake box type setup to eliminate the servo issue for ever. When it arrived the passenger door was catching the body and had clearly gone out of alignment. A few hinge shims and all is back how it should be, its clear the top door hinge has been bent & I will change it at some point but shimmed it so the door opens and closes properly for now. Both door locks were removed and changed for some high security type that I managed to find as new old stock on a shelf in a old car spares place. Once fitted properly that adds the advantage the doors can be deadlocked and can't be opened from inside or outside till unlocked with the key. While it has been sat in the garage I found a nice puddle of blue coolant under the front of the car. I did think the radiator looked a little tired and was on the list of things that might need changing. Currently got a nice upgraded airtec uprated alloy radiator to fit but got a little dismantling to do to get to the mounting bolts. Once that is done going to give it a proper wet sand and machine polish as the photos don't show the gel coat patchiness. In the sills are a couple of steel reinforcements that the seat belts bolt to and have been known to go rusty. I di have concerns about the reinforcement. Out came the endoscope I got for last xmas. Its not a mega expensive one but first time to use it in anger. Unbolted the seat belt bolt and removed the lower seat belt bar which left 2 holes to get inside the steel reinforcement. What I found I really didn't expect. From the photos it not only looks to be very good with no corrosion but looking at what appears to be a weld it looks like the steel has been galvanized to me. Unsure why there are welds on the metalwork but clearly done before they were inserted into the glass fiber body and glassed in. I have now found out that the car has spent some time on the continent which could explain the lack of MOT history and the gel coat fading on the upper surfaces of the body rather than all over as normal. Overall I am still over the moon with it and really happy I moved the other projects on to get this. Moving forward the plans are hopefully I will be able to find a early type weber and inlet to replace the round top type currently fitted. Maybe some other option I am unsure. Currently no real plans to change the CVH unless I come across something unexpected. Had a few CVH powered cars and I know people complain about harshness but I have always found them to be fairly reliable and robust with tuning parts still quite easy to source.
