I do this for a living and you guys did a great job!....The only easy part about applying graphics like this is messing up! If you rush the job anywhere, it will show. The guy who did the decals for you also did a very good job...and must have had the right templates. those compound curves are tricky even with properly shaped graphics. I would agree on finishing the truck, stepping back and seeing what decals to add later. very easy to do it that way, but a bear of a time getting them off fresh paint without issue. looks great! JP Yeah, thank you. My mate did all the work I just helped out with the long decals. He does it for a job but did swear a bit during the day. .. know what you mean about applying decals to fresh paint but I don't plan to remove so that would be an issue for the next owner if I sell and if they don't like em. I'm chuffed with it so that's me happy

So with nothing else to do - lets go for it One big decal kit P8194663 by Anglia305e, on Flickr P8194672 by Anglia305e, on Flickr P8194677 by Anglia305e, on Flickr P8194679 by Anglia305e, on Flickr P8194671 by Anglia305e, on Flickr P8194674 by Anglia305e, on Flickr P8194680 by Anglia305e, on Flickr That looks better :-) very happy bunny, it took us best part of a day to get this done, to repay my mate I did a full machine polish on his partners Audi TT we finished quite late into the evening. The decal kit was a bit of a sod to be honest, as can be seen the stripes are individual and as we had never done out like this before we did struggle a little at times. Suffice to say I'm very happy. Now do I fit the rest of the decals? my mate seams to think I should finish the truck and take pics as is and when the rollbar and A bar done have a think and we can always add them then..

I little bit of background, Christmas 1984 was given a Tamiya Brat as a present, I always had a liking for a pick up truck, maybe watching Fall Guy had an impression!! Seeing a Tamiya Sand Rover my friend at school had made me want to visit the local model shop and I saw the Ford Ranger - wow I wanted that, sadly due to price I received the Brat - not disappointed one bit,I thought it was cool. I ran that to destruction and this is the actual truck taken around spring/summer time. my brat 1984 2 by Anglia305e, on Flickr Roll on to about 2001 and I the 30 ish me wanted to see if I could buy a Tamiya Brat and thanks to ebay I did - over time i've had loads and still own many including some rare original release versions. The original box art differs to the manual cover box art by Anglia305e, on Flickr brat manual page 2 by Anglia305e, on Flickr And they also show you to apply decals different again in the manual brat manual decal by Anglia305e, on Flickr And this is the picture on the inside cover of the Tamiya build manual brat manual page 1 by Anglia305e, on Flickr and the decal sheet gives you a couple of options. There is a guy on ebay.com based in the US who makes decal kits for the Brat, so I contacted him and sent a few high resolution shots of the original Tamiya decal sheet and also sent these pictures of my model so that he could scale them for me. A few weeks passed and a full size decal kit arrived. P9081408 by Anglia305e, on Flickr P9081411 by Anglia305e, on Flickr So the dilemma, I called my mate to help me fit the decals and we cant decide which way to go....more to follow

Great, looking good. What vehicle was the A-Bar originally from? I just bought one for a late hilux, it's a lot thicker and will need fettling too. From an early cherokee jeep. I'd guess late nineties type. Just looked on ebay and that looked about right so took a punt on it. I'll be replacing the lower bar to make it longer to match the tamiya version.

Will keep a watchful eye on progress, liking the Ital, I had a mk3 Marina up until recently and I do regret selling it, it was typical BL of it'd day but I liked it for that. I would have another if room would allow. I still think that SD1 is a great car and great example.

And its painted - yeah - sorry for the small pics (from my crappy phone) IMG_4950 by Anglia305e, on Flickr IMG_4952 by Anglia305e, on Flickr So now the real fun begins - I do enjoy a build up - it seams so to go back together so quickly Rear bed done in U-Pol Raptor with 10% base coat (this is not painted) mv3 by Anglia305e, on Flickr P8054657 by Anglia305e, on Flickr P8054658 by Anglia305e, on Flickr P8054656 by Anglia305e, on Flickr P8054655 by Anglia305e, on Flickr P8054654 by Anglia305e, on Flickr 20170805_124107 by Anglia305e, on Flickr Its really nice to work on car using genuine panels, the fit is so easy to achieve (so much easier than my Anglia - it took me over 40 hours a side to fit a spurious wing on the Anglia to get it anything like - this was 10 minutes) Now the panels on it was a call to my mate to help me with the decals...

Well time for an update me feels, I left as it was being dropped off at the painters - I can paint and did paint my last project (an Anglia) but I'm getting old and miserable and really didnt fancy painting it myself. So I found a local guy that was willing to take it on - it was not an easy job as there were lots of dents in the pick up but suffice to say he did a grand job and i'm really pleased. 20170610_113852 by Anglia305e, on Flickr And thats where it stayed for a few weeks - So while i was waiting I had a spare set of wheels so sent the wheels off to be shotblasted and banded, I was recommended a guy in Scarborough and he did a great job - very professional. I went to 6j only because my tyre choice was better and I still wanted it look like a factory model. 20170701_164346 by Anglia305e, on Flickr 20170701_164401 by Anglia305e, on Flickr 20170701_164352 by Anglia305e, on Flickr for comparison 20170701_112906 by Anglia305e, on Flickr While it was away I tackled the A bar - it was a little too wide for my application so needed a cut and shut job. I wasnt too fussed about the bottom bar as that was going to be replaced. I ended up chopping about 6" in width from the A bar. 20171104_092057 by Anglia305e, on Flickr 20171104_094257 by Anglia305e, on Flickr 20171104_102643 by Anglia305e, on Flickr Thats away being stripped and blasted at the moment - then i'll adapt to fit the Brat. I've also had all the pieces made for the roll bar - they just need welding together.

Looking good! Your speed of progress is impressive. I started having a hunt for the US spec steel bumper as I quite fancy one too but I can;t find anything. I imagine shipping from the states would be a lot. My Texas truck has the side markers and front indicators but it's all plastic, similar to the UK spec one. This is annoying as (like you) I wanted to keep the wings repeater free, I could wire in the side markers as you are going to but I'm still stuck with the fugly front indicators in the bumper. The current plan is to use the UK bumper but install some subtle aftermarket repeaters in the bumper ends to mimic the US spec ones. That will have to do until I find a steel bumper and ends. Have you considered 15" modular wheels? I have on my red one and it looks pretty good and I don't think they show up too much as they still have a period style. You can get the weller 7 spoke style which would be more in keeping with your plan. They are bloody heavy though. Its not as bad as you think importing stuff, been doing it for years but you do get stung every now and again on import taxes but the prices tend to be cheaper anyway so it off sets it somewhat. The problem you have is the pick up is getting rare in the US now. I did have a contact who promised to help me source the bits but now he does not reply to my messages so got the hint with that one which was a shame. Australia is also an option but same problems. Beleive it or not I sourced parts for my Anglia from there much cheaper than the UK so worth a bit of time looking - it may pay off. Regards the wheels - I did consider other options but I really like the standard wheel and it matches the Tamiya wheel, the problem with going with larger diameter is the tyre needs be a lower profile and thats not the look I want. I need a large tyre wall for it to work so i'm fine working with the 13" wheel. Regards the bumpers - I've been collecting these on or off for 3 years now - I have managed to source an excellant complete front bumper for mine so these are all the spares I have left (bar the rear bumper..) So this is the research I did to get the Tamiya look right. It's not 100% what I want but Tamiya had artistic license and I need to work with what I've got. So this is similiar to what we initially got in the UK - Tamiya didnt fit overriders so they are easy to delete. Standard chrome bumper with one piece end caps. The bumpers below show the differant types available - this is not all, just what i've collected and these are my spares. I've alse sourced an A bar that will be adapted to fit and had a roll bar made (or start of)

Bumper end cap ? Nice work, keeping the engine std or going wrx ? James Yes sourced the correct US spec end caps and turning the marker lamps into repeaters. I'll be keeping engine standard, will sit on banded steels

what a fantastic looking car, I worked for Mitsubishi in the mid to late eighties and never saw one of these during that time, they were so rare. I have an 80's Lancer and L300 and both pale in comparsion to this stylish beauty. Well done - very impressed.

I did notice a company was selling a full size decal set, can't remember where I saw it though. I didn't know about the differences in the grills, I like the slatted look, something else for me to look out for! You're making cracking progress. I wonder where the decal company in the US got the details from there might be a box of decals set at home ready to fit And thanks for the comments.. To be honest I did but like a loon I forgot, it's the vapour cansiter for the fuel tank - The tank was removed prior to cutting and no I didnt as much as scratch any of the pipe work or wiring - it was moved prior to welding it all back together again. Just lucky I guess. We all need luck sometimes. Next instalment is to swap it around and start on the front end. I have the n/s/f sill to weld up. Fit new wings and front valance and then strip for paint. The doors and tailgate are all like new just minor dents.

Lucky find! I'm currently on the hunt for a roll bar but no success so far. I'm making one for mine, I've had the hoop made and bars to tag down to the wheel arches (I had 2 made so if successful i'll let you know) but its to my own design i've not copied owt so watch this space. Regards the parts and finding them, I bought this truck in 2013 and it took me 3 years to source the parts - I only started this properly at the start of the year but i've fallen in the trap before of starting a project and then having it derailed due to no parts. Once again thanks for the comments, I have always wanted one of these trucks since I was 13 years old for reasons that will become obvious. I gave up looking a few years ago due to how bad they were and trying to find a good one. This was a very lucky find and i'm over the moon with it. The corrosion on it is so minimal comapared to many and also it had not been messed about with which helped (being one previous owner and low miles I think also helped) Anyways I left it with the rear bed finished - a skim of filler and sealer round the edges (I plan to use Raptor on this for the finsihed result)
