OK, so this is definitely turning in to a Toylander thing, and I need a UJ arrangement as I need to change the angle of steering input. Got a question thread running too but maybe that was unnecessary. Please forgive the crudeness of this, but here's my thoughts (where the red and green assembly is the UJ/steering rack):

Don't weld a steering shaft. They should never be welded. Cheers for the comment. I know - but this isn't for a car, so it's OK. I really should have been more clear when I posted. I am building this - but it is now not going to be a soapbox. It's going to end up as a Toylander type thind, but I need to change the angle of steering input and UJs is the way forward. Please forgive the crudeness of this pic, but I'm trying to get to something like this (where the red and green assembly is the UJ/steering rack): (shortly after posting this comment, I shall update the thread with the new plan too) Does that help to make me sound any less daft?

Wondering if anyone can help. I'm after a 2 or 3 part steering linkage with UJ's in it, something like this: BUT One of the openings where the splines fit needs to be 3/4" (as that is the size of the stem unit I need to fit it in to) but the other will have a steering wheel welding on to it so could be any size really. The 'centre' bar needs to be as short as possible. Any ideas guys?

So, 5 years on - how did it end up?

So the more I think and look at these, the more I realise the trike has everything right for the Hansom Cab soapbox - right shape, brakes already on, steering good etc...
So I think the trike will (first off, that engine is still DEFINITELY going to end up on it) be dressed and the scooter turned in to a Toylander thing as I still have the motor.

Thanks for the words. 'Lug a fair chunk' is outstanding. Plenty of Tigras available here cheap if you fancy one?! Are you coming from the Corsa side? I'm fond of Corsa Bs too since my mate got one last year. Lol, cheers - I'm from a little town where the kids go scrumping for cars so my language can be both basic and colourful at times. Most of the engine swaps on this platform I am aware of were Corsas not Tigras, but it's pretty much the same bay I understand. Today I couldn't get near the barn due to work and kids. That's why we need these projects - as a tonic. Work is my poison, my child my tonic (don't see her everyday as she lives with her mum who is satan). Cars is an interest more than a hobby as such, cutting my teeth on smaller things, like this and this. I live 5kms from one of the longest stretches of unregulated autobahn in Germany. Also referred to as the Porsche test track as driving an hour north brings you to Zuffenhausen. But I'm not a speed hound - I like the Meccano! V6 for the soul. Sounds wonderful. We did a European charity drive last year but not much of it was in Germany. Not that it would have mattered, the car we had was a Mazda 626 and wasn't exactly light with 3 blokes, shed loads of beer and 4 pairs (always carry a spare) of underpants in it. Good trip though. Anyway, enough waffle - get the wife to take the kids out and start fiddling some more. With the car, obvs.

So errr... what's happened since May then?

Aye, 11 more ponies to lug a fair chunk more weight - block material I guess. I think it's this and the size that makes the C20XE or C20LET the more common choice - but there is nothing wrong with treading the less-beaten track. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do, have always had a softspot for the little Tigras.

Over here the V6 isn't 'normally' dropped in the Tigra/Corsa B (it does/did happen though, obvs) as people 'normally' went for a C20XE from a Cav - namely for weight vs power. The V6 is much heavier (apparently) and not a huge gain over a well tuned XE lump. That said, V6 is ALWAYS going to sound better, especially with a custom exhaust and decent inlet.

Liking this a lot. Could use an axle from a ride on lawn mower with a diff to power both wheels. Cheers! Looks the part doesn't it. Need an old-school pickup to transport it though. Interesting thought that, will investigate - I wonder if the diff on the mobility scooters trans-axle would be suitable, not many ride-on lawnmowers being broken round my way.

As this isn't technically part of my other thread (even though I mention this there), I'll branch this off on it's own from here on in - but to bring you all up to speed I've been making a soapbox racer and bought various bits to build it up, one of which being a go-kart 'kit' (read: 'sack-truck almost converted to small go-kart') that I bought for the wheels, axles and brakes that were there, also came with this: Well I had thought about adding the engine to the soapbox when I've done the run for some toy fun later. But it's not 'likely' to be the best basis for a go-kart to be honest after I have chopped it all around etc - but who knows. And if I make a good enough job of the Hansom Cab soapbox, it might end up doing a few years stint in the history group and possibly the museum as some form of local homage to Hinckley, I don’t know. So I was browsing the internet and well-known auction sites for box section and inspiration and came across this: Wait for it... “FANTASTIC!” I thought, “bet it’s miiilles away”. Nope, 5 minutes’ drive from my house, 2 minutes’ drive from where I work. Was on eBay for £20 starting bid (no bids) and 3 and a bit days to run. Thought I’d be cheeky and sent a text asking if I could come take some measurements with a view to buying it. The seller called me up and we arranged that I would pop round on my way home. Got there, friendly guy – told me he had bought 2 Stringray bikes and made this for a soapbox race in Wales. Won a prize (I think for most frickin’ awesome) and did quite well. Anyway, I tell him my situation and plans and he is almost as buzzing as I am. Tells me he has had loads of interest but nobody came up with an offer or bid and seemed to want to convert it back to pedal-power (see the footplate bar, welded through the crank ‘bit’ so would be tricky). Anyway, the deal is done and it’s loaded in the back of my car (handlebars flipped down, front wheel off – just fits). He even agreed on a great price as I think his SWMBO just wanted it gone (more on that in a bit). My plan is to drop the little engine in between and above the two rear wheels and chain drive the left hand wheel – should go fairly well. Will probably need to look at cog and transfer arrangement as the engine has a go-kart cog rather than a bike one – so different chain - will look at that another time though. Here's it's peachy bum: So not so much a build I guess, but an adaptation/extension of an existing one (or two). Now I just need to find the right time to tell my SWMBO this now resides in our garage…

For anyone still bothering to read this, I have made a bit of progress, in that I have started chopping the engine off the rear, looked at the front axles and realised they are pants and will require some re-engineering to work (so forget the image ‘plan’ above). The rear however might be a save – think these should work quite well, having a cut and play tomorrow on those. Anyway, this update isn’t actually about the soapbox, it’s a kind of 'introduction' to a secondary project if you like. Well, I have found a more permanent home for the engine that came on the go-kart 'kit' (read: 'sack-truck almost converted to small go-kart') that I bought for the wheels, axles and brakes that were there. This one: Well as I said, I had thought about adding the engine to the soapbox when I've done the run for some toy fun later. But it's not 'likely' to be the best basis for a go-kart to be honest after I have chopped it all around etc - but who knows. I have made a list of all the bits'n'pieces that I need for the 3.0 V6 conversion and started watching the local ads. Nice. Have a bookmark and a bump.

Nice Hilux. Always wanted one, still do.
Ref bullbar and your centre protector thing you mentioned - would/could you not chop the outer parts off it and reattached the centre section? Would look kinda like US police nudgebars...

Hi Seb, in the sentiment of my last posts on your other thread (now closed off or whatever) - I apologise if I was ever rude to you, not my intention. Let's start over. I'm sure you've created a thread on PistonHeads already but there is a recommendation for a place called JoJags in Speke - not sure how far away from you that is? Anyway, this is the thread - hope it helps.

EPIC! Thanks for the inspiration on chassis for my Soapbox-scooter. Please tell me you: 1) have threads for the others and 2) have more plans! Nevermind, found the Trike one. Also, truly awesome.
