Hello chaps. Thanks to the most understanding wife in the world I put a deposit down on this last week. I have wanted one for ages, but I don't really have time for a project. I was browsing eBay for stuff I don't need (usually pickups and Land Rovers, and occasionally old Fodens) and this popped up. Looked good, and turned out to be solid (mostly). So yesterday I caught a bus and 4 trains and trundled home, it drives really nicely, if a bit bumpy. Kind of like a cross between a series and Defender LR. Did 35 mpg which I'm pretty chuffed with. Took the load bed out this morning, as it was broken and there were little plants growing through the holes. There was loads of soily stuff lurking beneath... Which swept out, revealing this beauty. Properly pleased. There is some rust near the front, but its not rotted through. Then the postman arrived with a snazzy new tonneau cover. I cleaned out the cab using the "warm soapy water liberally applied with a sponge" method, it looks a bit better, the water turned satisfyingly black. It needs doing again really. Then I went and helped weed the garden ready for spring in order to preserve domestic harmony. I don't really have a drastic plan of action, just tidying up and little jobs. I might loose the bull/nudge bar to tidy the front up a bit. I don't plan on nudging many bulls. Perhaps a bit of mild off-roading and green laning.

Keep the bull bar - it works as an anti-Audi guard...

Keep the bull bar - it works as an anti-Audi guard... It was quite tempting, crawling through Brum on the M6 at tea time, to give a few a little 'tap'.

I hope you don't mean the one JC ruined? The Arctic one is a bit beyond my means.... Mrs Generalee is good at art/design, and can work photoshop. I have no idea. Anyway, we were looking at alternative graphics for the sides. Hot Stripes The pink bit in the middle of this would be fogged lace, a sort of nod to low rider/mini trucks. Or my favourite, Super Scallops. But we are getting ahead of ourselves, there are plenty of patches to patch first...

Hahaha, they are brilliant, I hadn't come across those. Had a spare few minutes today, so I took the bull bar/Audi nudger off. It's really heavy, and just at child head/grown up pelvis height. Anyway, it came off easily, only 4 bolts. I left the brackets that hold it in place as I may use them to mount some sort of radiator/sump guard thing. I think it looks loads better without it, not so much like I just turned off the farm. If anyone wants this I will swap it for beer or spotlights.

Funnily enough I bought a Mitsubishi L200 4x4 Pick up (a single cab) last month as a workhorse for something I want to do. Its 2005 but seriously agricultural in many ways. After a month of ownership Ive come to the conclusion that everybody should own a 4x4 Pick up at least once Good luck with yours, they are a legendary truck.

It drives bumpy cos that lift it's got. Load it up or sit one of those camper backs on it and it'll ride nice! Never seen one of these in EU - total everyday Aussie ride. Agree with the removal of the 'bar. No roos round here ha. Love it.

It drives bumpy cos that lift it's got. I have been doing some measurements and that, I'm not convinced it's been lifted. I think it's just beam axles and leaf springs feeling bumpy after driving 'normal' cars. I might try oiling them. Anyways.... I bought a cam belt kit but chickened out of fitting it, so we took a trip down to deepest Derbyshire where I grew up and my folks still live. An old workmate threw it on for me (R&R Motors in Wirksworth, proper old school lads and know Toyotas and Land Rovers), I gave him beer tokens. All good. Then we dumped loads of stuff into one of my satellite tat stores and looked in our camper. It rides loads better with the bed full of junk treasure. Still running well, still loving it. Next on the list is tyres, I am trying to find a compromise between chunky off road but not too noisy on the tarmac. I would love BFG all terrain but not sure I can justify the expense for a weekend toy, Insa Turbos look good on paper but goodness they howl over 30mph.

I haven't really done much on this apart from tip runs and enjoying bouncing about over the summer. I needed some choons though... Turns out the head unit lives behind the dash, rather than slotting in from the front. That said it came apart easily, and more importantly went together again, without any bits left over. I have never, ever taken a dash to bits and not had a load of snapped plastic and a pocket full of leftover screws after. First time for everything... New Kenwood unit, and some pool ball gear knobs. Sorry about the sun bleached picture. Turns out you can polish a turd.... It is a bit pink again now. I will experiment with some tcut or something more abrasive, then keep her waxed. Obviously I knocked the bottle over when around half way through. My boots are still a bit pink. So are my tyres. And the pavement. So that was the summer, but the old girl has been limping along with a broken back spring (or rather a snapped leaf) for months, and MOT is looming. More on that in a bit

You just need a dog tied up in the back for that bush vibe. Like the wheel splatter effect - new trends? And that has got lift whether it's standard or not.. that is lift. The Landcruiser handbook from 1981 cautions against trying to drive 4WDs like 'normal cars' - when they're empty on the road it's a bit like driving on stilts. Designed to go moderately across rough terrain with a load.
I just went to - supposedly - the 'largest Landcruiser meeting in the world' and camped in 'Hilux valley' with a ton of Hiluxs. Check 'Buschtaxi Treffen'. Always in September. 500 plus Cruisers/Hiluxs and loads of Indiana Jones types!

Nice Hilux. Always wanted one, still do.
Ref bullbar and your centre protector thing you mentioned - would/could you not chop the outer parts off it and reattached the centre section? Would look kinda like US police nudgebars...

I did consider something like that, but I like the clean lines without it. It has gone now, swapped for a fine selection of ale with a lad from Sheffield. I got some towing eyes off eBay which bolt through the same holes so will have a look at some other sumpguards to see whats what.

I have no idea how to do multiple quotes... Anyway, Springs. The O/S spring had a broken leaf, the smallest of the 4 main leaves (leafs?). As I don't plan on hauling any serious weight, I thought I would pull the spring out, strip it and just pull the broken leaf out. That way (in theory) it might ride a bit better and I wouldn't need to shell out for new springs. If it didn't work I had nothing to loose. Long story short, the springs were really worn, as were all the bushes. I ordered this lot on Monday at lunch time, by ellevenses on Tuesday it was here. How did we go on before the internet? The bushes in the chassis hanger were a real swine, I cobbled up a press thing with a socket, some threaded bar and a G clamp. Still needed loads of tea and a cheese sandwich in between the swearing to get them in. One side all done, note the ratchet strap axle positioning device. I haven't any work booked for tommorrow so I may attack the other side if the weather holds.
