What about a Toyota or Nissan? Avensis - 108-127bhp Corolla - 108bhp Almera 1.8 - 111hp Primera - 138hp All for under 400 according to autotrader.. plus they're reliable. Avensis was a legit idea at one point because it has the good Toyota engines but wrapped in an ugly bodyshell and the 'blanderific taxi' image. Same with the Almera with the eager Nissan DOHC engine. However, I'm leaning towards a Vauxhall Meriva (yeah laugh louder!!) - Corsa bits so potential for upgrades but still has that 'why you competing in that?!' factor which is crucial. I'll see how things are looking next season or if not, may just try and squeeze some more ability from my faithful wee Nova. Glad that I'm getting others to give this sport a go - highly recommended and other competitors are always friendly. Merivas are Corsa C front end (mainly) with Astra (G i think) rear stuff, so parts are fairly readily available. I drive a VXR version (daily) and its a hoot - not sure how a standard one would handle being raced - quite a high centre of gravity to be honest. If you do go down this route though, hit me up for a link to one thats been Z20LET'd and fully sorted - the thread has all you need to know about suspension upgrades etc. I've been offered a Corsa C 1.2 SXI (Twinport) for nowt to take apart, think I might have it just for tw@tting about on these races you do - look great! EDIT: In fact, the guy is on here too joffturbonova

Mazda 626 2.0 is a good choice, some mates and I did a charity rally in one last year and it was great (even fully laden it was quite good). I understand the basis is the MK2 Mondeo, so parts are cheap and interchangable save a few engine bits. The one we had also had a TC button. Love this budget racing idea, might look in to it.

Whats the mileage and is it the 1.6? How far would you be willing (not that I'm asking you to, just a gauge) to drive it?

Blimey, how is that still on his drive? Will give it some thought but first impression is it's too far away...

This is strange. I was asking myself this exact same question earlier today and thought it would make a good thread on here. I think a B204 powered Saab. I looked at them earlier in the year for a combo swap and it seemed possible to pick up moted B204s for around £500. What kind of power could you get out of one with an additional £500? Don't they run up to 275bhp on a basic map? You can have mine for £350 with 12 months' ticket in February (unless it fails miserably). In answer to the question, if it's just power, I can't think of anything better than an old Saab. Those big barges are lovely but a sight heavier. You'll need a bigger downpipe to get beyond about 225 on a 2.0 but if you pay less than £500 for the car that still keeps you well within budget. Can you let me know if your Saab goes through in Feb and is still for sale? Ta

Just wondered if you'd done anything else to this? Looking at a Midi project myself and like your look. Also, have you dropped it yet? You should:
