Ok so another update, I got my new brushes and bearings for the alternator. Cost me a grand total of £9 for the lot. So when I got the alternator casing back from the sand blasters I gave them a lovely coat of silver and pressed in the new bearings. Then it was just a case of cleaning all the internals up, fitting the new brushes and putting it all back together in reverse order. Ended up looking like this. In the first picture you can see the old brushes lying next to the alternator on the floor. Then I gave the cooling fan a nice coat of grey along with the V belt pulley and refitted it on to the main shaft. Next was refitting the freshly painted alternator to engine block bracket. Next was the upper adjuster bracket back on to the block. Then it was the alternator fitted back on to the engine with a nice new gates V belt. So I connected the battery up and switched on the ignition and was greeted with two red lights now instead of one. Started the engine and this is what I was getting from my multimeter. As mentioned it was probably down to the fact that the bulb was blown in the ignition circuit that it wasn't charging. However the bearings were completely shot and the brushes were 1/3 worn. I then took a pic of how the engine bay is looking now. I had the oil filler cap and radiator cap sand blasted and painted silver with a gloss laquer. I think the engine bay is almost done. Thanks for looking and all comments are welcome as usual.

So, Very small update time. I got my timing cover back from my friends paint shop. A nice gloss black finish effect that I'm really pleased with. Then it was fitted back on the car. Then something else that I got back from painting was the original front grill. In the first page you can see that the original grill on the car was red when I purchased it. I didn't like it and it didn't match the library photo of an L I found online. So I had it repainted to match the plastic trims. I much prefer it now. What's others opinions? Thanks for looking.

Personally I think you have the height spot on for a hot hatch. They always slope forward. I hate seeing cars drag there @ss around behind them. Most performance cars standard slope forward. Look at any M3. I know it's not the same car but it's the same principle of getting some grip on the front wheels. I like it.

Thank you all very much, I'm hoping with it being a much lesser base model (poor relation to the Ghia X) it will be a rarer model to find. I'm still trying to locate a front bumper but it's proving hard. Hopefully I'll get cracking on some more polishing during the week.
AB car pix I totally love your Chrysler Horizon. It's an amazing car and done totally to my tastes! I honestly can't tell you how much I like it.

Ok so it's update time for the Granada. She's been getting a bit upset that the Cavalier has been hogging most of my attention. So today I pulled her out of the garage to treat her. A while ago I invested in a RUPES Bigfoot orbital polishing kit. I tested one at Goodwood festival of speed and I was totally impressed. I've used orbitals before and they tended to drag or snatch. However the Bigfoot doesn't because of it's elliptical throw. Anyway here is the kit. There are 4 stages and they're all colour coded. 1. Blue (Coarse) 2. Green (Medium) 3. Yellow (Fine) 4. White (Ultra Fine) You get the polishes, pads and cloths. Again all colour coded. So I dragged the Granny out and decided to focus on two areas to learn on. The bootlid and the OSR wing. They both look like this. Flat paint, oxidised and very rough to touch. Not nice at all. So first job was to wash off any surface muck and dust with just soapy water and chamois dried. Next it was a good session with the clay bar to get rid of any imperfections on the paintwork. Then after the clay session, it was washed and dried again. Even at this point it was already looking better. Just not good enough. Then it was time to mask off the badges, rear window and rubber/chrome trims as with an orbital the polish can go everywhere! Then it was a case of working through all 4 stages taking your time and covering the panels in an up and down then side to side formation. A bit like a # symbol. Once polished off with cloths and sealed with a nice wax I was really impressed with the results. I'll let the pictures do the talking. I'm really pleased with the result and can't recommend the Bigfoot enough. Only problem is I now have to do the rest of the car too. Thanks for looking and all comments appreciated.

Lovely car, had a good look over it at Billing this year. Thanks buddy. Ok another update, two in one day. This thing with the Alternator was bugging me. I managed to find a new replacement for £75. However, if there's nothing wrong with mine and it was just that 12v5w cap less bulb then it's a waste. So I decided to strip it down and see. It's a Delco Remy. It came apart really nicely. So I now have a fully stripped alternator. Here is the two halves of the housing with the rotor. These have the two bearings in that need removing and replacing. The pulley and fan will be getting the aesthetic treatment. The armature (or stator) looked in good working order. No visible damage as such. The bridge rectifier attached also appeared to be ok with no visible damage. Then finally the brush pack. They look pretty good condition and barely worn at all. So all in all the plan is probably going to be to get some new bearings. Press them in place. Then clean up and paint the housing and pulley before refitting. Hopefully it will all be in good working order.

Hi there, I think you will find that the blown ignition bulb was causing your lack of charging. The feed through the bulb goes to the alternator and supplies the feed to excite the alternator. It may be that all the alternator needs is a clean up and new bearings. Cheers - mike Yes member 'chrisbasel' mentioned this to me earlier. Problem I'm having is I have no idea of anywhere local to me that will supply parts to rebuild my alternator. Any knowledge?

Ok so last update I showed you my new fuel pump and insulator plate. So first job was to fit it all back to the car. Nice and simple job. The new ally plate worked a treat. Here you can see the ally plate and the two gaskets in situ. However this left me with a bit of a dilemma. As now I have a nice looking new fuel pump. I didn't want to refit the worn out looking old flexi fuel hose. So I invested in some braided 8mm fuel line and some nice hose end finishers. I think they look really neat. I don't like the finishers that are pretending to be threaded fittings. So I made up my two fuel lines ready to go on the car. Then it was just a matter of putting it all together. Here is the end result. I'm quite pleased with it actually. As usual folks. Thanks for looking and taking the time to read.

I could be wrong, but your alternator problem might only be because the ignition battery light was duff. I know what you're saying but there is something seriously wrong inside. The bearing must be toast as when you spin the pulley it rattles. It's update time again. On closer inspection of the pump itself it was apparent that it was letting oil passed the pump plunger. It was then leaking out of the housing drain holes. So it was no fuel pump time. Managed to find a NOS Quinton Hazell pump on EBay. I didn't need to worry apparently, it appears this pump fits pretty much every Vauxhall engine. So in my last update you may remember me mention the fuel pump gasket spacer. I couldn't find one at all anywhere. (Even after looking at Cavboys German EBay shop) So I spoke to my friend and he knocked up an aluminium spacer. Exact specifications copied. It was 3mm thick in the end. In with the new pump were two new paper gaskets so this spacer must need to be fitted. Here it is all in situ ready to go back on the engine. Thanks for looking, more updates to follow.

As an ex MOT tester I'd say that the cable is catching on something underneath. That could possibly effect the travel of the cable.
Hard to say without seeing but that's where I'd be looking. The cv boot is just something you'll have to remedy afraid. As you say it's easy enough to remedy.

The pump gasket was the cause of the front oil leak on my MK1 Cavalier, you are better buying a proper gasket which is available with the 'bottom' gasket set. It's good to follow the progress of a fellow MK1 owner, looks a lovely car too. Cheers, Been looking at your thread and must say it's a fantastic car you have. A real credit. Is the short block gasket set still available then? Also does your clock illuminate? Cheers in advance.

Lovely Cavalier! She looks mint.
In my experience they used to paint nuts like that on the factory line to show that they had been torqued up to tension. Especially important load bearing parts like the engine mounts.
Nowadays it's done on a rig by a robot so not as much human error.

Hi. Looks like normal thick gasket paper or even dare I suggest cereal box would sort that. If not hylomar. The picture is deceiving, it's approx 2-3mm thick. I've got some gasket paper but I'm thinking of having an ally piece machined then gasket paper either side.

Ok, Another little update time. I absolutely love the original protruding number plates on the car and originally the plan was to restore them. But then I decided they should be left alone as they weathered through years of abuse. They're no doubt the originals. How many modern cars today can you say today only wear their original plates through their existence. However I did decide that the mounting bracket should be replaced! Having removed the front plate, you can see the nasty little oil leak leaving patches on my garage floor that I've been needing to fix. I've always suspected that it was coming from the mechanical fuel lift pump at the bottom of the engine. So the next job was to tackle the leak. Since the alternator is still off the car, this makes the job a lot more easier to carry out. So off came the fuel pump, it's very grotty and needs a damn good clean up. However it is working a treat. I think the gasket was about had it. It's about 2-3mm thick and feels like it's made of fibre. Haynes manual refers to an asbestos insulator. However it crumbled during removal and I'm going to need to find another some where. I cleaned up the gasket face ready for refitting the pump once I've located my new gasket and cleaned the fuel pump. Cheers for looking and all comments and advice greatly appreciated.

So, not a major update but an update non the less. I focused my attention on the rear passenger door as there were a few issues going on there. Firstly I removed the dented chrome trim from the door top as you can see here. The dents were really noticeable and quite annoying. I gave the paint underneath a clean up as it had some brown stains! You can see from the pictures that the vinyl on this door had started to peel away. I'm guessing due to prolonged sun light. So I whipped the door card off. Here you can see the problem. So peeled back the stripped bit and applied some adhesive. Then clamped it down whilst I went to make a Sunday fry up! Returned later and removed the clamps. Hey presto we have a door card that is no longer looking sad for itself. On another note, as mentioned earlier in the thread I'll be giving the Granny some banded steels. Managed to pick up these original GL steel wheels. These will be being banded soon. All comments welcome and greatly appreciated.

In fairness the AA aren't much better in my experience. When my Sierra Cosworth blew a coolant hose, the 'patrol' that turned up first of all tried to recover me however bearing in mind I'd spent 4 years restoring it and it doesn't have a mark on it. He said and I quote "I CAN'T GUARANTEE I WON'T DAMAGE YOUR TOWING EYE OR FRONT BUMPER"
When I politely declined and asked for a flatbed lift. He called his control and I overheard him stating I was awkward and a difficult customer.
I complained but in the end I got told it was one word against another and nothing was done. I can't even cancel my membership as it comes with my bank account.
I learnt along time ago that nobody looks after your car/van the way you would so don't trust anyone with it.
I really hope you get your Transit Luton sorted out as she looks fantastic and I do love a classic commercial.
