A little update on this for you all, You may remember I wanted to get some original size 13" wheels for the Cavalier as it was sitting on later Cavalier 14" wheels and hubcaps. So I sourced myself a set of the right size wheels albeit from a more modern marque. They were in a pretty poor condition though. Firstly I cleaned and degreased them, then attacked them one by one with the wire wheel attachment for the angle grinder. Until they looked like this. Once they'd been degreased again I gave them several coats of primer. Then finally some good old Satin Black. I was quite pleased with the final results. By this time I'd also managed to source myself some original period Cavalier 13" hubcaps in great condition for a good bargain price. As soon as I'd fitted them on to the car I was pleased with the results. I personally think the 13" wheels and hubcaps suit the car much better than the later 14" wheels and caps. What do you think?

Thrasher - Yes I'm starting to get the feeling that it's maybe not as bad as I first thought. There are hodges, the front wings are literally sculpted filler and nothing else. I have managed to find all the panels to replace so it's not looking too bad. I know what you mean about the engine noise, I remember driving this on the road and it literally screamed. I'll probably take the engine out anyway so sound deadening will be going on.
slater - Cheers mate, I'm starting to realise that although it's rotten it could be 100 times worse!

A bit of a thread revival but since I'm getting a bit handier with the welder I thought I would try and progress the old Transit. So today I decided to tackle the near side of the cab. Firstly I took off the passenger door which is in really good shape and doesn't appear rotten or full of filler. This gave me the room to drill out all the spot welds holding the front wing on. Incisive was looking pretty good, the big hole and the rott on the underside of the wheel arch around the turret top seems to be double skinned as it is in really good shape from the inside and it's a really thick solid mount. I drilled out all of the spot welds and got the front wing off of the cab. The wing came off nice and easily on this side, but this is just the tip of the iceberg. Here you can see that the inner wing is gone, along with the wheel arch and the outer sill. I should hopefully make some progress on this as I'd really like to start using it again for practical reasons. I've found most of the panels I will need to replace so progress should be made. Thanks for looking.

mexicansteve - Thanks buddy, tank is the right word. As far as cruising by, you and me both.
yoeddynz - Cheers buddy, I'd love to see what that sales catalogue looks like.
düdo - You'd be forgiven for thinking it wasn't British that's for sure. It's not quite a multi-storey but that would come in handy. I've got a workshop I rent out, I keep them there. I am full up though!
oldntired - I'd never heard of a Leyland P76 before your post, I like them!
s1105127 - I'm starting to get the impression it's quite a rare car the more I research it. I can't imagine it's a quick car but I guess back in the day with the 3.3 and standard twin exhausts it might have been. Yes second refusal is yours 😂
marsh300ce - Thanks buddy, yes it certainly is a genuine 'barn find' car. When I researched them they went to 1972 so nearly one of the last. It's a later car I know that as earlier cars had fold down tables on the back of the front seats, which were then later changed on safety grounds to map pockets which mine has. I think it's a 3 speed automatic Powerglide but I'm not 100% sure. More updates of all the collection to follow. Thank you for following them.
Sinky - Thanks buddy I'm very pleased with it.

highvoltage - I didn't realise how rare the Viscount actually was until I read up on what it is. It's basically a luxury Cresta PC and like you say most of those have rotted away. I think this has lived in that garage most of its life when not being used.
del - I fell in love with it when I saw it instantly so I can see why you would want one in your dream garage. You want first refusal? 😂
mercdan68 - Cheers buddy, amazing that it goes to show there's still genuine 'barn finds' out there rather than the EBay fakes.
neilsdavies - It still is bloody huge! It swamped my trailer and the poor old Zafira didn't enjoy pulling it. You want to see inside the boot.
mk2polobloke - Dude, you follow all my work and now you already know me so well. The snow foam will be working its magic on this one. I think under the thick layer of dust it might not be too bad. It's actually in pretty good shape, also you can see on the MOT history online it's only had minor advisories that I can sort. The car is so big, funny you mention those wings as the car reminds me of a big American car of the era. I have some plans for it which I'm sure you'll like and probably have guessed as you know my builds. I appreciate the compliment dude! I had to let the Granada go as I'd got as far as I could with it after the ClassicFord feature. It's sad but I can't keep them all. I don't have the space.
MK2VR6 - Yes it's got some good solid history with it and other than the colour being changed it's relatively stock. I did Google the number plate and found some pictures on a FlickR from years ago of it parked in a Sainsburys! Other than that I've not had time to go through it properly.

Ok, So even though I've got more than enough projects to be getting on with, sometimes people contact me about old cars that they're waiting to sell. Since I sold my Mk2 Granada I've been missing a huge tank of a car. I got the call about this 1971 Vauxhall Viscount. The back story is the car has been laid up since 2009. Basically the elderly owner died, his wife left it in the garage but now she is in a retirement home and the guys nephew is left with selling the lot. I took a ride in to London and here's what I was presented with in a really old garage. With a set of jump leads and some brake cleaner down the carb, the 3.3 straight six fired up! Result. As you can see from this pic the car was originally green. My research told me that Viscounts only came in green, red and blue so that made sense. Inside it has the standard walnut dash, the electric windows all round and the 'Powerglide' auto transmission. The seats need some attention along with the driver electric window but the rest of the interior is looking pretty good. So a deal was done as I just had to have it as I was missing the Granada. So out it came and onto the trailer. Now you're probably going to be thinking what I did, 'what the hell is going on with the rear end?' Apparently according to the nephew his uncle was a Jazz musician and played the drums with the likes of Tony Bennet and Burt Bacharach, apparently he had the car modified to accommodate his massive drum kit. It looks like he fitted some commercial leaf springs underneath. They're HUGE!! I'm really pleased with the car but nothing will be happening with it too soon as I've already got loads on the go and the shop is full. But I couldn't resist buying a cool looking car. Any ways, thanks for looking as alway.

keekster - Thanks buddy, the van could never be mistaken as flash Not many people would be crazy enough to save a Maestro van. alexhatcher - That's really interesting mate and food for thought. You couldn't show me a pic of the area you mean could you? At least I can check it out. Time for another update today and unfortunately it's a bloody frustrating one. The eagle eyed amongst you will have noticed that the centre section is patched up beyond belief. There's also a threaded rod acting like a support. You can see it in the previous pictures. So firstly I searched everywhere to try and locate a centre section. As you can see below I needed AUS3014. I found one at onlineautomotive.co.uk and it was on sale too. So I ordered a section and it arrived. However, as with all pattern exhausts it was no where near right. I'll let the pictures do the talking. Miles out here, appeared either over bent on manufacturing or damaged. Just a little bit out here!!! Here you can see that one of the hanging brackets is just completely sheered off and missing! So I called onlineautomotive and explained the situation, basically was questioned as to whether I knew what I was doing as this is the correct part. I explained it was damaged and miles out. I was told to send pictures and to wait. So I've done that. However work much go in and having not heard anything all day, I've just cracked on. Firstly got the oxyacetylene out and heated up the system to bend it in to the correct shape both sides. Once that was sorted I turned my attention to the old rear section. Having cleaned it with a wire brush I found it to be a little poorly. Since I couldn't locate a rear section as it was out of stock I decided I had to repair it. Although not an ideal solution I formed a plate around the silencer. Then welded it all the way round no linished it up. Much messing around later it still wouldn't fit underneath! After much pulling my hair apart and tweaking here and there to stop it hitting the floor, I ran out of daylight!!! I know where I need to bend and tweak so I should get it sorted next attempt.

Time for another update on the van. Firstly you may remember I said I'd welded that piece back in to the seat crossmember after repairing the metal underneath. Here it is welded back in, ground down and primed. Next up I seam sealed the repair from the inside after I'd coated it in cold galv spray. I also seam sealed it underneath as well. Next up I gave the passenger floor a coat of AA van yellow. The underside was also given a coat of black underseal spray. I then bought some of this stuff. Sound deadening to replace the stuff I'd removed. Drivers side. Passenger side. Now that the repairs to the floor both sides of the cab are done I'll turn my efforts to the source of the leak. I'm 99% confident it's the windscreen. Thanks for looking so far.

Ok so another day, another load of welding and fabrication. Firstly I picked up where I left off and finished welding the floor plate in and then gave it a good linishing to clean up the welds. Next up I fabricated a piece for the inner sill which I welded in to position and cleaned up all the welds. With this part now finished I moved on to the rear section over the front chassis leg. Firstly I cut this piece out of the crossmember underneath the front of the passenger seat. I'll weld this back in after the repair is complete. The reason being is I simply couldn't repair it properly without removing as you can see it was rotten metal underneath. So then I cut the piece out as square as I could to remove the rotten metal. Cleaned up the surrounding area ready for welding a new section back in. Next up I fabricated a piece from a template and welded it in to the hole and also to the chassis leg. Gave it a good clean up and was quite happy with the result. I did weld back in the piece of crossmember I had cut out so that it was finished but forgot to photograph it. Thanks for looking.

Ok another little update on the Maestro. So you may remember I wasn't too happy with my cut position half way over the jacking point/outrigger. So I extended the cut further back and I also tackled the rust on the inner sill. Then a bit of fine tuning with the cutting wheel and grinder we had the whole area chopped out. So I gave it a coat of weldable cold galv spray to seal the metal. Next up I made a single plate for the floor piece, I'll make another piece for the inner sill later. Then it was a case of welding it a little piece at a time and saw panel beating to get the gaps right. A little while later it was looking like this. Needs a bloody good clean and grind up. Really happy with the front section but less happy with the rear. Started to rush there with the welding and the wire speed was too fast hence the build up. The left hand side needs finishing off but it's nearly there. Had to remove the original mudflaps and wheel arch liner to make the front a nice water tight and strong fit. Thats all for now, should hopefully get this piece completely finished tomorrow which would be nice.

br00klyn99 - Thank you buddy. alexhatcher - Thanks buddy, I'm up to date with your van which is looking good! Time for another update on this. My seam sealer arrived so first job was to apply to the underside of the van. Once it was dry I then covered the whole area in black under seal and stone chip. So with the drivers side complete I moved back over to start all over again on the passenger side. First up was a lot of cleaning with the wire wheel on the angle grinder. This wasn't gone on the drivers side but it's gone here. Over the top of the chassis rail, which you can see through the hole. Although the passenger side floor pan is in better condition than the drivers, you can see that the inner sill isn't looking too good on this side. Here you can see that the hole is right where two panels join together. Although it's double skinned I will just replace this panel with a single skin as it's only the overlap point. Here you can see the marked cut lines. The front part marked out for cutting. With better knowledge from doing the drivers side I decided to remove the corner completely, I should have done this on the drivers side in hindsight. It makes doing the radius section a lot easier and stronger. Only one little hole appeared which I can rectify easily. I might bring the cut further back, the way I've cut it here will mean the join is in the middle of the jacking point/outrigger. Would be better for seam sealing if it was in the open and not hidden from the other side. I ran out of time so this is as far as I got. Thanks for looking 😉

marinanut - Thanks buddy. I appreciate feedback like that as I'm new to fabricating and welding. I quite enjoy it. zeb - Then I may well be bending your ear about authentics of British Telecom vans if that's ok in the future. I'll definitely have a look at the linkage you mention. The seats are really comfortable, I can see it being a nice van to drive. kilroy - Thank you very much for those comments, I was the same up until recently and used to outsource my welding and fabricating but then I just thought, sod it, I'm going to have a go. With a good friend who has taught me and also leant me his spare welder I've started to have a go. Saving underrated vehicles is very enjoyable, it's a belief that every member of this forum shares. So time for another update on this again as found some more time on the old thing. So first thing was to clean up the welds and repaired panel with the wire wheel on the angle grinder. Next up I used a P80 grit sanding disc on the angle grinder and tidied up the welds a little bit. Next up I hoovered out the massive amounts of swarf, dust and welding wire. I then gave it a coat of cold galvanising spray and smoothed some under seal in to the curve of the top right corner as its the one part I couldn't clean up as well as I wanted to because it was in the corner. I need some better equipment for these sorts of locations really. Next step it was the painting. The trusty AA van yellow! Underneath I gave it a good solid base coat of cold galvanising spray, I'm waiting for my new seam sealer to arrive so that I can properly seal the panel underneath and then underbody seal for protection. Then as you do I decided to have a look at the passenger side again, with some poking around with the magic screwdriver I find this. curse word. It doesn't seem as bad as the driver side at this point but I guess only the wire wheel will behold the truth. I then started poking around in the load area and found that both rear wheel tubs were showing some signs of rust. With some more poking around with the screwdriver I found this on the drivers side which I think is in the prescribed area for MOT corrosion due to being within 30cm of the shock absorber mount. Same story on the passenger side as well. More welding but that's ok as I'll take the opportunity to practice! On a more positive note, remember the header tank cap from the previous page? Well several minutes under the scotch cloth attachment on the drill and varying polishing wheels later, I got it looking like this. Thank you all for looking and following the progress. All comments welcomed.

Optimusprime - You're certainly right about rust spreading much further than you first thought. I used your tip about card templates in the below update. Cheers buddy. SmokeEm - Glad you're enjoying the thread buddy, I will try the header tank in the dish washer but I have to wait until the Mrs isn't looking! Time for another update on this. As you remember we left off last with a big hole in the floor. So first up I made a template out of cardboard and then out of 1.5mm steel sheet. Once I'd got the shape, there was plenty of trimming of the plate until I was happy with the way it sat in the gap. Now I really am a novice with welding but I have a good friend who is really good at it and I'm trying to learn from him and he's happy to share his knowledge. First up I put some tacs on, then used the panel beating hammer to close the gap, then another tac. I then used a big fat black marker pen to highlight the welding line as I kept losing it whilst welding and looking through the mask. Next up I joined up all the tacs as I was happy with the plates positioning. I also did some plug welds for where the plate goes over the jacking point outrigger. The rounded corner was really awkward to weld up, purely due to not being able to get the tip in to the space! The final article all welded up and in position. It obviously needs cleaning up and the welds smoothing but I'm happy with it. Underneath it will need seem sealing and a lot of undercoating for protection but that will be next on the list. As usual, thanks for looking and all comments appreciated.

Time for an update, Bought some parts for the engine from Mini Spares. Got some new manifold studs and nuts, a new manifold gasket, new fuel pump gaskets and fuel pipe. Also I sorted out the inlet manifold water jacket by putting a new insert inside the rotten jacket. Then refitted the freshly serviced SU carb. I tried to give the header tank a clean out as it was full of sediment and dirt. Got it clean inside but it didn't look too clean outside. However I will be making this Unipart header tank cap sparkle again! Once filled with coolant and fired up the engine sounded lovely. No exhaust blow anymore and it actually sounds much quieter. Next up it was time to have a look at that drivers floor. Once I started using the wire brush attachment on the angle grinder it soon became clear that the rott had spread much further. And then much further AGAIN! Having had a good look underneath I had to adjust my cut lines for the front chassis leg which runs diagonally. I also needed to be a bit careful around the outrigger/jacking point. So I adjusted my cutting lines to miss the chassis leg and avoid the jacking point. First panel cut out with the cutting disc. (The eagle eyes amongst you may notice a problem here that I have no idea why I didn't spot it but as you will see causes me issues later) Second piece now cut out and also the spot welds removed from the outrigger keeping it in tact. Gave the underside a good clean up so that I have a nice fresh clean surface on which to weld. Got caked in gunk doing this part. Here was my deliberate mistake earlier, when I cleaned up the underside with the wire wheel it broke through with more rust so I had to extend my cut further down another inch. I ran out of time today so had to end it here. I need to make some plates and then weld them in next time. I'm by no means an expert to welding and panel repair, I'm still a real novice. So if anyone can see room for improvement or offer advice I would greatly appreciate it.

Ok time for a little update on the Capper. So since the rear suspension has been fitted i also had an axle location kit to stop any lateral axle movement. I opted for the 'CapriSport' kit, the product itself is good but I wouldn't recommend the customer service provided at all though. Here is the kit as it came. It was advertised as painted/powder coated and it wasn't as can be seen, so first job was to etch prime and paint it. Got under the car, I had to make some modifications to the kit as I'm running 2" lowering blocks. This meant the straight bar was not in line as the lead Spring was sitting much lower than the axle. I just used some old injector spacers and some longer bolts and it worked just fine.

Looking forward to seeing this progress. Followed your Granada thread and thought what u did was amazing. Think the same car is on KGF classics site? I love Capris had an uncle who bought a new one every few years and I've had a 2.8i and a 2.0s. Prices are going upwards rapidly. Good luck with it Thanks mate, it is much appreciated. Sadly yes you are right, I asked KGF Classic Cars to find a new owner for the Granada which they did very easily. It was a really difficult decision for me but I had to sell to progress my other builds. Thanks for following mate.

rsmithy626 - Yes they're all really simple to strip, luckily everything came apart/undone easily with no dramas. I probably will strip and refurbish the axle at some point properly. The wheels to begin with will be banded 13" steels.
tomfairall - Really nice easy belts to do aren't they, bit like Transit 2.5Di lumps.

Another week, another update. Some of my parts arrived this week to complete the modifications I want to do. So today I decided to sort out the rear end suspension. First up was jacking it up and letting the rear axle hang. First up I removed both rear Spring shackles from the car. Literally everything on the underside is plastered with underseal. It's a right pain in the . I dropped these in to a bucket of thinners to soak off. Next up I went to remove the long front Spring eye bolts, this is the driver side, no problem here. Then I went to do the passenger side and I was greeted with this! Some absolute THUNDERCUNT has welded a bloody plate over the area of the access hole. Thought about it, then decided to clean the area up. It's badly welded and in fairness needs dealing with properly. But I decided to make two overlapping holes with my 'Christmas tree' cutter and file down the difference. This gave me good access to the nut and a decent OEM finish hole. I then undid the U bolts and removed the old leaf springs. As you can see below for replacements I have decided to use single leaf springs from the 2.8i versions. Next new purchase this week were these. Koni adjustable dampers front and rear. Got a bargain as I'm assuming by the boxes they're old stock. They certainly look like they've been on a shelf for some time. But as you can see they're brand new and in perfect condition. With the springs removed and the axle supported I decided to remove the old standard shock absorbers. The lower bolts just mount to the axle. The upper mounts are located neatly behind the back seats. Tilt the rear seats forward and you are presented with this. Behind the little inspection grommet is the top nuts. Undo these and the shocker comes out the bottom. Here's the shockers fitted to the car. I've decided to go with 2" lowering blocks to lower the rear. Unfortunately the locating dowel on the leaf spring was just a bit too wide. I decided to turn the washers down for a tight fit. Bit of a dark picture but here you can see the new single leaf Spring fitted with the 2" block and new U bolts. Then it was just a matter of doing everything up and lowering it down on to the ground. The rear now sits like this. The wheels are temporary just to keep up mobile but I like the height of truth be told. Thanks for looking.
