Another fasinating project grumpynorthener so consider this Bookmarked. Whilst dealing with elderly restorations can be daunting given the high chance of bodgery it must be satisfying to return the car back to what it should be, is it going back to its original colour? Knowing nothing of the Jowett marque are there any 'build' details remaining when the cars were originally built seeing as how these were actually handmade?

Bookmarked, i follow Ian's channel (Hub Nut) so have seen this giving TWC (Ian's Invacar) her engine. I briefly saw TP in the video of the FOTU last year too. Good to see that TP is alive again after the years she's sat. Good save, keep the updates coming.

WOW ! A 2 door in RHD !! This is very interesting and needs more explanation. 70s Volvos are such an attractive looking bunch of cars, even the 3 series (oh to see another early 'flat fronted' version) Bookmarked.

I can associate with 'car smell'. My Cavalier has 'that smell' that takes me back to my Grandads Mk1 when i was a kid. Also it's weird how 70s BL made cars have a smell of their own. (waiting for the obvious replies to that comment )

Here's a long overdue update of my Mobylette. Summer 2018 was spent just using it for both work (30 miles per week) and pleasure rides, one being to The Norfolk Motorcycle Museum in North Walsham. Most of you guys are probably aware of this museum, for anyone who hasn't visited it's well worth an hour or so to see the impressive collection. Mobylettes are well served with 4 in the collection. I carried on used it, though with winter looming i decided that it'll be off the road before the salty roads appeared. My hand was forced though when in early November i was on a ride out with a friend when i noticed that the Moby wasn't as spritely as it could be. The front brake was red hot to the touch so i disconnected the cable so as to not totally roast the bearing etc and took an even more gentle ride back home. Wheel off and the reason was apparent, one of the brake shoes had come away from its backing and was jamming against the other shoe. So a phone call to Brian Alpin (such a friendly and knowledgeable chap) and a few days later a parcel arrived. New shoes, speedo cable (the original broke two weeks previously) front drive sprocket, rear drive sprocket and chain (the old ones were worn and the chain baggy) Over December '18 these parts were fitted, the cable didn't bring the speedo back to life so Danny supplied another speedo drive as the old one had rounded its internal drive, this was fitted and still nothing! The speedo itself is out now for a strip and clean as i think that was the cause, dry old grease causing the cable to 'drag'. With the speedo out i took the chance to repaint the dull and tatty looking headlight shell and sidepanels in white with lacquer, the original dealer sticker was retained and sealed in. I don't want to over restore it just make it a tidy, useable bike. One night recently i was looking through the net when i ended on the lesolex.com site. On there was a NOS speedo chrome bezel and as mine had been handpainted silver at some time it seemed rude not to buy it, once here i'll then strip down the speedo. Last Saturday was sunny and dry (a rarity in Norfolk of late) so i took the Mobylette for a short run to blow away the cobwebs, it ran really well and has made me miss riding it even more, roll on spring. So, that brings the story up to date, once the salt has gone i'll be back on the road though a 2004 Yamaha Neos was purchased in November as my out and out daily.

Consider this thread BOOKMARKED. What an amazing thread, having a vehicle that means so much to you and rebuilding it in a foreign country is epic. I can associate with how much your van means to you, i've had my Cavalier since 2002 and i'll never sell her. Just opening the garage door and seeing her sit there makes me smile.Roll on spring when i can get to enjoy driving her again. Anyway, the writing of this rebuild is terrific as are the photos, it's good to see the battles that others are fighting as we can give encouragement/ advice with the process. Yours looks saveable, rusty, yes, but with some time and effort jobs a goodun. I follow Ian Seabrook (Hub Nut) on You Tube and his exploits with Elly his 2CV, very good and the more i watch the more i learn about these cars. Keep up the good work.

Brilliant progress Jim, there's nothing more satisfying than rebuilding an area that was once air and rust (well other than actually driving the car) enjoying the videos of the rebuild.

10 years back i was buying and selling cars big time. These as well as the 400s just sold instantly, i've lost count how many i dealt with but i had one of these Kingfisher Blue versions with 20,000 miles from new that stayed with me for 3 days!!! Bubbles versions were sooo popular and Kingfisher and Nightfire Red versions i couldn't get enough of. To this day i have a lot of time for the Rover marque as regardless of what some think (unreliable engines blah blah blah) i know these can be decent cars that are pretty well put together.

Watched your progress videos and found it very informative. That inner scuttle area looks surprisingly sound. A good dose of epoxy will see it good. I was also half expecting for that Astra to end up going full chat backwards into that fence.

Interesting looking project. Back in 1985 a neighbour bought a brand new light metallic green Charade Diesel, occasionally i'd get a lift to school in it.

Great work so far, a question, are you going to pull this down eventually and do a full rebuild like the Police Car? Is it going to end up in your workshop?

Each to their own and it would be a boring world if we were all the same and all of that - but why spoil it by bolting stuff on it that it never had in the first place - it looks dam lovely has it is Exactly, seems it's a common Ford thing. This is a late date version too, granted it's your car but i'd just leave it as is seeing as how nice it looks to start with. Why make it something it's not.

Goes without saying..BOOKMARKED. Seeing as how bad the Police SD1 was this is a salvageable car. Giving its rarity (version and colour) it deserves resurrecting. To get it stored and saved would be enough for me, just get the parts together and start the project when the fancy takes you. A resto holiday is no bad thing.

I'm in agreement with the other guys. Seeing as how this is a 'fresh' engine it needs a proper run in .I'm no Rover V8 expert but once the initial run in period is covered i'd imagine there will be a re-torque of the components needed. That plus a proper bedding in should be good enough to iron out anything like you are experiencing. 1000 miles down the line see how things sit and go from there.
