I like the blue front and as said you could always change it later.
A herzin strip can't be that expensive or could you mock it up with some red wool or something before going for it? I like the contrast on the handle but as said the red may be a bit much down the side
I assume the bit round the roof would be the same as mine. It looks like my ones been replaced recently as is in great nick so can ask where the guy got it from if helps
Cheers

Lovely camper - lovely transit. Interesting that it's got a late model grille and front indicators - I wonder why? Cheers mate I don't think it has got a late front end by looking at the autosleeper booklet it shows the same front end. I thought that it was an option on early vans as some are round lights and some are square lights. I assume they made it a square standard by the end of production. However someone has massacred the wiring in the rear lights so probably changed from early type (as per mk 1) to the later rear lights and based on that contradicing what I'm saying above, someone may of also "modernised" the front. Interesting and hopefully someone with more transit knowledge can shed some insight. Cheers Josh Ooh sorry see what you mean now. I assume it's had a new front end and was modernised at the same time. It's lacking history so unless some owner can shed some light it will stay a mystery Cheers Josh

Whats that electric window kit? Its ace. I have a vague memory of them but not seen one in ages. Haha you mean this... It is my favourite thing. It's a Pelco Product Autoglide. I love that I only have 1. I also like I can mock the passenger who has to use a windup window. I like the way it simply attaches to the spindle. Thanks Guz had a look but no joy on the fridge

Took the transit back to my parents to see the capri Was followed into the drive by a local taxi driver who said the rear wheel was wobbling. I had a nice chat with him about it and had the now standard conversation i have with all my vehicles "you don't see many of them around". It was late and i was knackered from work so assumed bearings or something else without thinking to check the rim its self. It turned out it had buckled and considering I'd not hit anything that hard it must of been like it since I picked it up. So garage has swapped it over and I've picked up a new rim for a fiver. Also at the weekend did an ikea trip to kit it out and had a little play with the fridge to see if it would work. I was unsuccessful on starting it on gas or electric. Anyone have any experience with these fridges and can give any in site into how it works. It's an electrolux 200 There is also this little switch which I assume has something to do with it but I have no idea. When flicked to as per the green arrow it has 6volts on both terminals. When flicked as per orange it has 10 volts at one terminal only. First camping trio away at the weekend. I can't wait. Cheers Josh

Nice work. Are these front drums? I'm surprised as comparing to the transit has discs up front but if you compared the suspension set up the cf has a more sophisticated dbl wishbone compared to leaf set up on the transit.
As said in my thread if you need any reference points for the interior let me know
Cheers

Thanks again for all the comments definitely will be using and enjoying. So reason I didn’t complete the first thread post, and didn’t then follow up with much on the second was because I was knackered. Reason I was knackered was that I was using the driveway and hose of my gf parents in Sussex to clean and go over a van. Now not normally a problem we went for a drive after the cleanathon and headed back for a bbq before heading home to London. I however stupidly left the lights on and meant when we went to start the van to go back to London it wouldn’t. Everything had died, the dash lights wouldn’t even come on. So we stuck it on charge and tried to start it a couple of times. This went on until about 11.30pm when we finally got enough juice in the battery to get it going. We then set off for home. That was where the second problem and the route cause of the first problem, the battery wasn’t charging as the alternator was shot. I work north of London and had to be at work at 8am, we were in sussex about an hour from our flat in south London, which I had to stop at to get a change of clothes. It was then another 1hr and 30 from my work so the alarm was set for 4.30am to get up and set off. I reattached the battery and we set off at sunrise and we did the drive back to London just on battery power, when we got home I got changed and jumped into my XR3i and got to work on time. Unfortunately I’ve been knackered all week as a result of it so below is what else I wanted to share. I realised today that the image I’d been using to show a few mates at work of what a mk2 transit camper looks like is my van. It links back into the transit forum so will go on there soon to see if I can find some more history as currently is lacking. These are some pics of pictures taken by the previous owner when he got it in 2007 which show the yellow over blue stripe. And then the extent of the history… Open it up and this is inside Which has this great marketing material with more facts on the features it would of come with new.. Its also a pratical family car… And flip over the leaflet and this is on the back… Received 27 May 1978. I love this kind of stuff. So to solve the issues I’ve got an uprated 75amp alternator on order so hope to fit it tomorrow night or Saturday morning. Really could do with the transit to get to work as I had an object destroy a tyre on my XR3i so will be running sans spare until I get it sorted. Other items I’ve got this week which will look to use - Fan belt - Ignition leads - Oil Filter - Oil Items that I want to do in short term that generally involve making sure its reliable long term by replacing anything that looks suspicious and to check the camping gear works so we can use it for the rest of the summer. - Give the mechanicals a once over - Make a list and buy some tools to keep in the van. - Get Fridge and Stove working – was told they are but want to test them before I use - Drain and clean the water tank - Convert to electronic ignition (need to check it first as may already be) - Fit Electric Fan - Relocate Leisure battery to void in engine bay as takes up so much space in the cupboard - Check the gear lever bushes – its pretty bad on gear change – its an old transit but it shouldn’t be as hard as it is to get into reverse! Also did the most important addition today… Cheers for reading Josh

Cheers guys for positive comments. I love it I'll put some more pics up when I get a chance Looks tidy! I love the way its almost identical in layout and design as mine. Any big plans or just use and enjoy? I wouldn't be surprised if autosleeper used the same bits. Your thread has made me less nervous of gutter rail rot amd rot in general so thanks! Give me a shout if you need any pics of any areas for reference on your van. Plans are to use it for the moment, then see what it needs as we figure out what works and what doesn't. I've already got loads of plans but I don't tend to get loads of time so likely to take a while to instigate Cheers Josh

I like camping and I like cars so the next step was obvious…. Combine the 2 into a beast of a Transit! I’ve been on the lookout for one of these for years, whenever they’ve come up I’ve not been in the financial position, they’ve sold so quickly or they’ve been rough. This one however turned up on eBay a few weeks ago and looked great in the photos. I had a chat with the gf (been in her ear about this for our whole relationship) and we decided to go for it. I spoke with the previous owner over the phone and he was a nice chap and sent me some pics of the worse areas on the van. TBH they weren’t that bad and seeing more inspirational threads like this retrorides.proboards.com/thread/187764/1978-bedford-autosleeper-sitting-pretty?page=5I thought whats the worse that can happen… Fast forward a week and I was getting an 8.07 train out of Euston to Liverpool on a Friday evening to go stay with a mate so he could give me a lift across to the Wirral the next morning. A couple of beers to catch up turned into a few and a Kebab on Friday night, but due to my excitement I was up early and raring to go. We got across to the Wirral by 9.30 and there it was in front of me… It was a bit dirtier than in the photos but was as described, every panel and chassis cross-member has had work but he was solid. Some of the additional pics that came separately from the ad: So I handed over the cash and went to the seaside straight away with my mate Phil… Then started the long drive back to London. Obligatory First fill up pic… Then got home about 8 hours later… The 8 hours wasn’t just because of the slowness of the van, traffic was also a nighmare and I wasn’t being particularly great at holding my bladder for more than an hour. The van did however perform faultlessly… bar the curtains falling down when I opened up the side windows and hit 50mph. So what have I bought… Its a Transit Autosleeper delivered in May 1978, Key facts - 4 speed gearbox - uprated 2.0 OHC high compression pinto engine. He cruises comfortably at 60 and has enough left that it will accellarate when heading up hill. - It averaged 25mpg on the drive down. - It has such modern appliances as a sink, - a 2 way gas and electric fridge, - 240v hookup, - a stove and grill, - a pop top roof, - leisure battery That was pretty much Saturday done. Sunday was a trip to my GF parents to give him a rundown… he’s called Pugwall btw after the rubbish 90’s Kids TV show. We stopped at a carboot and I purchased some ramps that were cheap then swung by Halfords to pick some cleaning bits up... Never spent so much in Halfords on cleaning potions and chemicals– came to about £50. Parked him/it up at the gf parents house and started to clean… Strip down Mid clean… Pics now clean My favourite thing… the 1 electric window When he was clean we went for a short drive to a viewing spot, had a beer and some snacks to celebrate the ending of the cleanathon. Its getting late now so will hold it there hopefully gives you a flavour… to say I’m happy with it is an understatement. Cheers Josh

Nice XR3i there, doing a good job of bringing it back to how it should be. Keep the pics coming Thanks mate appreciate it. I can't believe its been 2 months since I last updated this thread, the XR3i has been great and I use it pretty much every day. First and foremost... I put a bung where there once was tape… Then did these bits for classic ford (no pics unfortunately): - Remove "ouch" sticker on rear bumper - Clean - Polish - Wax It had a great day out at classic ford and by coincidence there was another XR3 on the Capripower stand which meant it sort of looked a planned amongst the sea of Capris. Was interesting seeing the differences from an early car to the later car. Also was useful to see the differences in the models that I never really picked up on. I was able to get some good pics of some similar cars to mine which I can use on references. Followed classic ford up with the MOT which it passed after a TCA bush and CV joint although the garage also highlighted that it was wearing the wrong type of wheel nuts which I corrected shorly afterwards. Was also getting an intermittent charge issue so a new alternator sorted that. Went to pick up a rear ¾ for my capri from Preston – I’ve written about that somewhere else was a good drive up and a slow drive back. I should really add this pic to the retro load luggers thread That highlighted that the brakes weren’t the most confidence inspiring so the next weekend, after I’d done the oil change and the spark plugs, I thought I’d bleed the brakes. On attempting the “quick bleed” there was an issue as the NSR drum wasn’t getting fluid. The brake hose had collapsed, it was 1.30pm on Saturday at this point, and the local motorfactors had just shut so I had to borrow my dads car to do the 50mile run to burton power to pick up there last braided hose set. The brake hose must be as old as the car it was seized and I ended up cutting it off so I only replaced the troublesome brake line. I need to go and do the rest when I’ve got a bit less time pressure and didn’t need to shoot off to spend some time with GF. Car was looking great and I went camping…. Campsite was amazing looking over the Swanage Railway Then went camping again… this time in Sussex Then went to a festival… no photo as you don’t want to see the state of it. I then replaced the HT leads as one end had a crack so car was a bit hesitant at times. The fuel line also had perished after only a month so I swapped it for a braided hose made of the super resistant stuff which the name of escapes me. Before After The fuel line is a bit loose so not sure I’ve routed it correctly. If anyone has any comments please let me know And that sort of brings me up to date…. Out of my previous list I’ve not done much but its not grown much. I’ve really been enjoying cruising around it. So still to do - Silicon seal Rear lights as still leak in the rain - Change Oil (again its due!) - FIt new Spark Plugs - Wire brush weids and repaint patch on underside to check its solid - Re-fit front speakers and covers - balance wheels - re-seal rear window as leaks - refit amplifier and centre console as is missing a load of screws and isn't fully inserted (also sort mess of wires behind the dash at same time) - Replace rear bumper - Check for rust and treat (before winter!) - Re-hang exhaust (bloody speed bumps) I cleaned it for the first time since classic ford and it came out beautifully…. Hopefully not so long til the next update Cheers Josh

Cheers chaps for these responses. I somehow managed to miss these before I headed off this morning. I could of sworn I'd checked... anyway I'm such an idiot for not seeing them. So as I hadn't seen any of these I duly ignored them and set off at 6.10am this morning. I love it whens its like this... I ended up adjusting my route as I thought the one I selected through the chilterns wasn't the greatest so took the following route. It was nice going up out of London towards Windsor. I then cut through the chilterns on this route, the roads were nice and quiet so was able to make good progress and there was a mix of twistier bits with straights so was able to overtake any slower drivers They were resurfacing the road between Hughenen Valley and Bryants bottom which was like a gravel stage but good fun. Best bit of the chilterns was the lack of traffic due to the time of morning 7/8. After stopping at a Mcdonalds on the A5 for a coffee I took the M1 and A50 to get to the Mcdonalds at Uttoxeter where I had a double egg mcmuffin meal which had been on my minds since I left the first one. From the 2nd Mcdonalds I took the following route and sort of skirted the peak district. The first bit up to A53 was great really open and super views The roads where clear apart from the odd cyclist so I had some fun. I hit the A53 and got stuck behind a van who was on his Sunday drive but it was a pleasant change of pace and gave me the opportunity to admire the view and a procession of MGs, Triumphs and old BL stuff driving in the opposite direction. I assume must of been a club drive or something Unfortunately no pics as was drivign at the time. I got to Buxton and re-evaluated my route as like you said georgeb the A6 was a nightmare and red with traffic so ended up going back on myself and out towards macclesfied. On that route though I got stuck behind some traffic, and it was also covered by average speed cameras. By this time it was 11/12 so think that had killed any opportunities for more spirited driving. I then headed up to Preston via the motorways to pick up the item that was the main reason for my trip. What greeted me in Preston was this and this getting a clutch change And thanks to Nick and Tom I was able to get the rear quarter on the roof in the rain Drive back was all motorways and ended up taking about 5 hours at 55/60mph with stops every hour to check the straps. I got back this eve at 8. So around 500miles and 14hours in total at approx 40mpg which I don't think is that bad for an old escort. I really enjoyed the variation of travelling on A and B roads rather than the monotomy of mortorways though. Was definitely a better way to travel and a lot more interesting. Ignoring the cruise back with the rear quarter I reckon the variation and all my stops added about 50miles and 2-3 hours onto my journey but was worth it for the fun. Thanks again for the suggestion guys, sorry I ignored them... next time! Cheers Josh

Hi all, Can anyone help me with finding good driving roads please? I've got to pick up a replacement rear 3/4 for my capri that has kindly been donated to help fix it. Its been at my mates place since the Autumn when he kindly cut it off its shell. I'm based in South London and the 3/4 is in Preston so not a short journey (circa 250miles). I've managed to free up Sunday to go retrieve this and have been thinking, rather than a boring 4 hour stint up the M40/M6 I could mix it up, get up early and go a bit cross country on the way up then cruise back down the M6 when laden. I've had a google and I can't find any decent suggestions for roads that are worth driving so I came up with the following plan which I'd appreciate some comments on. The car for the journey... The roof bars and straps for the journey assuming it will be a bit big for the boot (any excuse to post my old car!)... The sick patient... Journey route taking main roads showing distance... My Route Plan to break it up and I thought wheres Green on Google maps to guide me then conveniently found a Mcdonalds or other to target for a curse word and a coffee! - I've also broken it down so that I can plum into my phone "avoid highways" for segments so that sat nav will direct me the route I want it to go rather than me having to navigate away from motorways Part 1. Crystal Palace to Mcdonalds Milton Keyne via Chilterns "avoid highways" This route takes me out through the centre of London which is nice early in the morning when your sharing the roads with a few cabs and up through the chilterns. Now I haven't found anywhere saying the Chilterns are good to drive over but thought I'd ask you guys if there are some hidden gems that I could detour over as my route is pretty much straight up the A413 which maybe a gem (but I've got no idea) More Detailed view: Part 2. Milton Keynes to Mcdonalds Uttoxeter (A50) "on Motorways" So this is pretty boring segment. I thought I could grab a coffee and cruise up the motorway as there isn't any obvious roads to go down as I wanted to drive the 3rd segment. If anyone has more entertaining roads or routes in the vicinity would be grateful! Part 3. Uttoxeter to Buxton "avoid highways" This part is to try and get me up on the moors and have some fun. I did a similar route previously when I went up from Alton Towers to my brothers in Todmorden, which was great with sweeping fast moorland roads with twisty ascents and descents. Id appreciate comments again as not sure if I'm missing any gems near by A bit more detail of route Part 4 Buxton to Preston via Stockport My thinking here is the bit to Stockport will be fun.. not sure if there is a speedlimit though on the road so again appreciate feedback on this segment. The rest is on the motorway network up to Preston Part 5 Preston to Home Motorways and laden up! Cheers guys, appreciate any thoughts or help on the above. Want to make it a bit more of an event! Josh .

Hi, Very quick update in prep for first MOT and classic Ford. Unfortunately quantity of items done was hampered by the dreaded clutch quadrant change which took most the time to do and wasn't helped by me initially inserting the pawl in the wrong way. Anyway the amount of times i put it together incorrectly I reckon I could change one pretty quickly now and have the order of the washers ingrained in my head. What a ballache that is by the way. why did ford make it such an awkward design. I'm going to have to go back there at some point as the kit that came with the car is a cheap £5 job and didn't include new bushes. The ones on it are pretty warn so will need replacing before they turn the pedal hole oval. Replaced fog light switch which had stopped clicking on and replaced the indicator stalk as it was extremely loose on mine. and finally swapped out the rubbish 6x9s for some slightly better 6x9s to fit in the MDF parcel shelf so that I can play music at a reasonable volume without it crackling. Rubbish speakers... New (to me) speakers And fitted I had to move my Capri to work on the Escort. It started after some juice in the battery. I love this thing I must get it in a garage to get it pulled straight and fixed... After the above mass of activity I've still got quite a list to go throgh. I'm not sure if it will pass its MOT. I've spotted some areas of corrosion so rather than try and hide I'll leave them as is, as the garage is pretty good and will get them to do a repair as needed. MOT is next week and Classic Ford is this weekend so priorities that I want to get done early on Saturday prior to heading to the pod are - Fit 38mm grommet in hole for rear wiper and remove tape - Remove "ouch" sticker on rear bumper - Clean - Polish - Wax The only other things I think to do for MOT are: - Rear seat retainer is a curse word to catch and requires a lot of force. Metal bit on seat needs bending a bit to catch easier - remove high level rear brake light that doesn't work Other items to do (in no particular order) - Silicon seal Rear lights as still leak in the rain - Change Oil (now well over the 3000mile mark since last change - but does leak so self changes to some extent!) - FIt new Spark Plugs - Wire brush weids and repaint patch on underside to check its solid - Re-fit front speakers and covers - bleed brakes - balance wheels - re-seal rear window as leaks - refit amplifier and centre console as is missing a load of screws and isn't fully inserted (also sort mess of wires behind the dash at same time) - Replace rear bumper - Check for rust and treat (before winter!) Finally some pics I took after a "test" drive of the new clutch pedal mechanism, felt like a rally with the rain! Love the rear quarter view Cheers Josh

I was there Sunday and was a great day. It was brilliant how close to the action you could get. My pics aren't as good but will give an idea of the track which took about 40 secs to complete - some cars were doing it in 32/33secs... This was my first time at a time trial as well. Pre Start Point Start Line Escort after startline after going round left hander towards Big Tree corner Sorry no pics of Big Tree... Escort at Chicane on way back from Big tree E Type after Chicane Arbarth 500 Mustang Viva sprint towards finish Winner on the day was this motorbike engined beasty... Thanks Josh

Haven't commented yet on this thread but it is amazing how easy you make it look. I've been hankering after a transit mk2 camper for the last few years and most seem to have similar rust issues. It's really interesting to see your repair around the roof gutter as that always puts me off them. Anyway great progress I look forward to future updates
Cheers
