That looks a bit weak to me. And yes, lol, cranking into a jar would be better! Fuel pump looks new, so have you checked the length of the pushrod that drives it? There are a couple of different lengths available and also some pumps have a plastic spacer where others don't. Aha! This engine was converted to carb by the guy that built it, as I say it has been like this since we got it (we bought it from a dealer type person) and never took it to high revs before buying (BUYER BEWARE...), so it might well be the wrong pump. It was a brand new Ford pump when built, but as I say the engine was originally EFI so it might be the wrong one as you say. How would I measure the pushrod that drives it? - and is there a cross reference somewhere that will tell me a part number that it should be? Thanks!

I'm hoping this is the best place for this! My dad has a Sierra based Marlin Cabrio: It has a late low mileage 1989 Ford 2litre Pinto converted from EFI to a brand new (at build) weber 32/36 carb with brand new OE ford mechanical fuel pump and new distributer. He has had it for years and its not moved more than 3k miles since it was built. It has never revved right since we have had it. It has never revved beyond 3500 under load. It will rev to the limiter out of gear. The timing was checked at the MOT in June and found to be correct (I assume the advance was checked). The other day we took it down the motorway and after a few minutes at 60mph (as fast as it would go) it cut out. We coasted to hard shoulder and after a while it restarted and we limped toward home at 50mph. it cut out again and would't start so towed it home. I checked the inline fuel filter (vertically between fuel pump and carb) and it wasn't getting full (even with the engine running), more like 1/4 and plenty of fuel in the tank. Thinking fuel starvation we: - removed inline filter and replaced with hose
- disconnected line at the fuel pump to tank and blew back (no resistance and tank was a new alloy one with breather at build)
- checked little filter in carb all clean
- checked throttle cable correctly fully opens throttle
- disconnected fuel pump-carb line and checked for spurts of petrol when turning over
- spark plugs are the perfect colour
Put back together and its still the same - now it just cuts out at 3500 rpm under load and will take a while to restart. Does this pump look like the correct amount of fuel when cranking? PS he should have hooked that pump up to a line and caught in a jar.... Thanks in advance for any help! Give me a modern car with an ECU to fault read any day, the carb is a mystery to me!

keep an eye on ebay - they regularly crop up as failed projects or cars that have been off the road for years. If you want an early 911 without the cost, this is the cheapest way but you need to be prepared for some fibreglass action! Do you think you could take a mould of the arches off your car once completed? I reckon there would be some interest in a few narrow body conversions!

If it was a second car with a limited milage policy it wouldnt be jolly pain in the backside all. If its a 2nd car www.hagertyinsurance.co.uk/ will insure it for literally next to nothing!

was8v, Were the hell did you dig this up from? ;D I was under the understanding that the Le Mans was the same as the S but with 10bhp more and upgraded roll bars. I have collected a few books on the 924 to 968 range! I very nearly bought a 924S a few years ago, came a gnats whisker away from buying a MINT 944S2 at the height of the economy doom and gloom (could have sold that now for double the asking). This is a good read: www.cannell.co.uk/Road_tests/RT1187_944_Range.pdfBear in mind that is for American market cars so there are differences in engine spec to UK. Check out the 0-100mph times and the top speeds! Whole bunch of contemporary tests here: www.cannell.co.uk/Road%20Tests.htmAlthough the site looks like its in trouble - press ctrl-a to select the whole page to reveal text. EDIT:

2.5 924s has faster top speed than the 2.5 8v 944 because the narrower body is more aerodynamic despite power defecit. Period comparisons indicate the lighter 924s as better handling!
As ChasR said, 924S was running diff compression ratio to 944 meaning approx 10bhp less.
However 1986 924S le mans run out model had 944 engine and different suspension. Only in black or white with light blue detail.

Received mine today and for the money its ace! Seems well built, fairly heavy duty plastic used and has a really good switch (unlike most cheap lamps). Plus it comes with a car lighter adapter to charge in car

They did not come from the factory with out oil injection, lot's of old beardies remove the oil pump for unfathomably stupid reasons. with oil mixed petrol non standard silencer and a hacked on air filter, I would be very very worried if hasn't been jetted up. it should have the standard jet size in the hyanes manual. Ah ok so I can measure whats in it and see if its different. Can you normally buy jets off the shelf designed for different filters and exhausts?! If so where from / if not any pointers on how to "jet" it correctly? I'm also thinking about colour schemes (ahead of myself I know). 1) Gloss black frame and Matt Black tanks and mudguards 2) Terminator 2 eighties style red and white 3) Camo matt greens What do people think? Or should I just clean it and leave the "patina"!?

Sum of my recent work:
Compression fine, oil tank missing completely hence mixing oil in the petrol. Apparently came that way from the motorbike shop so hopefully its jetted right.
Oh and the fuel filter was clogged so binned it and am awaiting a new one along with new spark plug and a few other bits.

Wow, thanks for the responses!
waveman - thanks for the heads up!
Rolphy - Thanks - I may well be in touch soon! Lovely RD BTW!
TerraRoot - Yes It had a milk bottle over the filter originally, still full of mud tho. Will put another back before using it in anger. Original airbox would be preferable, I've no idea how it is jetted now. It was originally bought from a very good local motorbike shop rebuilt as it is - if they supplied it with the cone I hope they had jetted it correctly. The exhaust silencer seems to be the worng one (wrong angle). I guess I'll see how it runs when rebuilt.
Hondaman - PMed back. I doubt its worth much and if so then I'd rather keep it as a project.
I've been told that its always been hard to kick start (always been bump started), and now the running problems. I've been told by a mate that this might be down to poor compression - so I may need to tear the engine apart and see the bore and rings. Does this sound likely?
I'm going to remove the head and de-carbon the piston etc before going that far - How do I tell if the rings are worn - is there a way without tearig it apart and measuring?

Round at my girlfriend's parents farm, I dug out an old trail bike. Its been in a barn for 10 years and not moved since they got a quad bike. Its had all the lights and instruments stripped off and has a few plastics missing. After dragging it out the barn, removing the minging air filter, checking for spark, draining stale fuel and topping up with some 2 stroke premix we ran it off and bump started it. It ran but stalls on letting the clutch out. Also won't kick start. Gear selection is a little hit and miss. I removed the carb and cleaned out a load of build up but ran out of petrol to try starting again. I'm going to see if I can get it to run well enough to do a few laps of the field and then I'll strip down and give it some paint. This just dropped through the door: A Haynes manual of the old school where they actually show you how to strip the engine and gearbox right down. Its never going to be road legal but I will use it for running round the farm and lanes on. Starting a shopping list: Air filter Fresh gearbox oil Chain and sprockets Big tin of black hammerite And probably a hundred other things when I come to take it apart. First time I've ever had a motorbike let alone a 2 stroke water cooled beast so any advice appreciated. To be honest I was staggered the thing started and ran, now I have these wild ideas of rebuilding it.

I love this forum for the cars that come out of the woodwork. If a mint big bumper car can fetch £2k then when restored that will be a collectors item. Does this have the long GTi exhaust cut out on the rear valance bit? I'd run it on a set of p-slots Love it.

Not entirely sure what those wheels are, but they hella wide. 195's are stretched. 15*7" I'm thunking. Anyone got any ideas what the heck they might be? They are 15x6.5 saab optional Ronals - jpowell.tripod.com/saab-wheels/#90005spokebThey also did 4x100 ones in 15x7 et24 I had a set on my mk2 golf: Until i bent one and then couldn't find another for love nor money. Then the week after I weighed them in I got contacted by someone who had just one wheel and wanted another 3 Nice wheels - look best on the mk1 'rocco:

Oh and a quick one of my other ride - a Marlin Cabrio (Hunter), still retro I guess styled on old Alfas and with 2l pinto under the bonnet but with a modern aluminium chassis : IMHO the best styled and sorted kit car of its type.
