I'm liking this build. I don't think i ever saw a 2 door in the wild. I had a mate growing up whose parents had a terracotta coloured mk2 hatch but that was an old car even then.
With regards to the paint, have you thought about having a go yourself? Most of the work required would be strip down and prep. Even doing that much yourself would save a lot of money.

That's a great looking thing.
What engine does it have?

Cheers, that's been on eBay a couple of times now. I don't think a quattro conversion is worth the effort on this. It would be mammoth task. I'm currently in the process of acquiring a good portion of the parts required for the manual fwd conversion. If all goes well I should pick up the bits next weekend

I have been plodding along with this behind the scenes. Admittedly it's been slow progress but it's an expensive hobby. After the roof came off the bus moved inside the garage. Bit of a tight squeeze! A drivers door was acquired to check everything lined up and then some more rotten metalwork was removed Front quarter panel and wheel arch panel acquired and the test fit looks promising. There is however some crash damage behind the front scuttle that needs sorting before all this is welded in. So off it came You can see here the extent of the distortion in the panel behind the scuttle. Difference between passenger and drivers side Some hammer and dolly work will be required to dress the damage and then there are various small areas of rust that will need cutting out and replacing. More soon

Still cracking on with what I can with this. My bearing press may be too weedy to press the wheel bearings out but managed the front subframe bushes fine. Would have taken me ages to burn and cut them out otherwise so it has redeemed itself a bit. I had to make a little sleeve from 4mm plate for two of the bushes but otherwise it went OK. I'm now stripping all the paint off ready for so e rust treatment and then paint. I'm thinking of getting a little spot sand blaster to get into the corners my finger sander won't reach. I still haven't got round to taking the struts to get the bearings pressed out but my other car has an MOT on Oct so I'll take them then.

Not seen that before. My A6 has no circlips or anything else. Seems to just rely on being a tight fit - which it is. Are you sure it’s a clip separate from the outer race and not part of the outer race itself? Nick It look separate. Definitely a different material than the outer race. Will find out when I take it to get pressed out

I was give one with only 3 pistons in for free. Put an engine in it and my mate has it 3 years. Cool fun little car. Alternator did exactly the same thing to me when I borrowed it for a few weeks. Had to do a 10 mile drive running out of electricity, lost power steering, just made it home. Had to do front wishbone bushes, which is a pain as the bolts go from the top down so subframe drop job. Enjoy it. Any question I now know them pretty well! Will probably be bugging you soon, cheers I'm sure wheel bearings are a hub replacement job on these. Are the bolts easy to get to?

A new alternator was going to cost over £100. So got a second hand one locally which turned out to be nearly new anyway. Result! Loaded up the alternator, a new belt, some tools and the old battery which I'd charged up into the trusty yellow cooper and headed to work BMW have the sheer cheek to call this removal of the front of the car needed to get to the alternator, "the service position". How they've made the engine bay access worse than a real mini is beyond me. Anyway. Old alternator on the right, "new" on the left I've never seen one crack before. Pretty impressive. All back together and took the time to grease up all the nuts and bolts and line up the front bumper better And it runs! The revs where hanging a bit but that seems to have sorted itself out now. The tappet noise has gone too. Took it home and gave it a good wash and vacuum It is an absolute Hoot to drive! If you've never driven one, they are cheap at the moment. Extremely fun little car and the supercharger whine is addictive. Sadly this meant the yellow cooper was surplus to requirements and has now been sold. Jobs to do on the S Radiator Left front wheel bearing Servo vacuum leak Cam cover gasket leak Service Gearbox oil change. Supercharger service Paint. Also Dave has informed me her name is Lucille So more on Lucille soon

I got an offer from a mate at work I couldn't refuse. A 52 plate Cooper S. I've known Dave for years and he's always had this car so I know it had been looked after. It was parked up in the works carpark January when he went away with work on detachment. Due to covid they ended up spending 6 months out there. When he got back the car wouldn't turn over. He tried jump starting it but it still wouldn't turn over. So he got a new battery. Still wouldn't turn over. So he bumped it while being towed with another car and got it going and drove it to the other side of camp. The drive belt snapped in the car park and it started to get hot after that so he shut it off and left it. He's always got the car mot'd and serviced at BMW so went and asked them how much it would cost to fix but ended up leaving with a BMW 2 series. WeBuyAnyCar.com were offering him £50 for it as it is or £600 working. I offered £200 and it was mine. Paid the man and took some obligatory pictures The paint on the bonnet and front bumper is hideous. It hasn't been painted in daves ownership so must have a a front end bump at some point. The rest of the paint looks original and in fairly good nick. The interior is very god and still has the original overmats which has kept the carpet in good nick. Work done over the last few years that he can remember has been 2 new wheels from BMW as the old ones were corroding and full stainless scorpion exhaust. He says it's been serviced at every mot since he's got it too. Unfortunately he's kept no paperwork which is a shame. The fault turned out to be a seized alternator. The car is missing its undertray and the alternator is right at the bottom so I'm guessing that getting covered in road salt over the winter and then parked up for 6 months didn't agree with it. It did start and run though. Sounded really tappety. You can just see a crack running round the alternator More soon!

Well after that utter failure I turned my attention to something less annoying and got on with the remains of the dust shields that I've been pickling in some acid vinegar. I've already cut them short as the leading edges were made of tea-bags They've come out de-rusted but are very thin. They'll do for now until I go for bigger discs and calipers when I'll make some bigger ones. They got a coat of hydrate 80 for now and when I mix up some jotun 22 they'll get a coat of that.

Well progress has been happening slowly. Mainly because the house and cars are taking up nearly all of my time as usual So half the roof is up. I think I'd like to get the other half for September or the weather is going to make it a pain to do I've bought a few things for the garage. Things I've always wanted but have never had room for. 1st up, a beautifully quiet air compressor. It's 90L so I think it should be man enough to cope with air sanders and spray guns. Something I'd like to add to my air tool collection is a rattle gun. Air powered ones seem a lot cheaper than electric. Just need to do some research before I buy. There's also a retractable airline. I will mount a water trap and filter on the wall. The plan is for the air compressor to live just outside the door in its own little shed. That way, when I'm spraying I can close the garage door and the compressor won't be breathing any fumes. An extractor fan will go on the back wall. That jet wash just out of shot Is also a recent acquisition and I've had an enormous amount of use out of it already. Just today its done the patio and paving around the house, blasted the grease and oil off the audi subframe and components and the same with a vice. Great bit of kit. And a hydraulic press. They're cheap enough and a useful bit of kit for bushes, bearings, panel forming etc. Shame it's not man enough to do the bushes on the audi but I'm sure it's good enough to do everything else Just a shame its so muggy and humid today. Truly horrible in there, hence all the jet-wash activities. A very cheap, local purchase has been this vice. Its a Woden. I'll be rebuilding it It's 6" across the Jaws with an anvil and is monstrous compared to my record vice. Just about fits in the back of a MINI While stripping down I've found out it would have been quick release but the mechanisms broken off and its been bodged to work without it. It's also got no jaw faces I would like to see if I can reinstate the quick release either by sourcing original parts or making up my own mechanism All I've done so far is stripped it down and jet washed the worst of the crud off. It'll need thoroughly degreasing, paint and rebuild. Paint wise I think I'm going to go with old series land rover engine enamel as I think it's a pretty similar colour. Not sure what to do about jaw faces yet. That's all for now

These front wheel bearings are weird. I've never seen anything like it. Instead of a circlip there's this retaining ring which I'm guessing must have been freeze pressed in. It's made of an impossibly hard metal that is ruining my tools and sending sparks everywhere when you hit it. So far I've applied 12 tons to it With heat Cut relief slots in the retaining ring and tried chiselling it out and belting out with a spacer and hammer Which has resulted in nothing more than ruining my cold steel chisel and taken chunks out of my hammer Then tried more heat and a repeat of the above and then back in the press again with heat. Absolutely nothing. Any ideas. I'm hoping I won't have to take this to a garage

I might have to get some of that. Looks very similar to the original equipment stuff used on a lot of cars. The black plastic ducting here is attached to an electric fan that blows air over the inlet, which I think is quite a good idea. It could do with some of the factory shielding round the turbo though as its starting to rot away

That's the plan. They get a lot of heat soak between the turbo and inlet though as they're on the same side

Gotcha. Don't get rid of your old flywheel as you can use it to balance the new one. You make a sort of pendulum which you bolt onto the old flywheel opposite the balance weight. The balancing people then drill holes in that until the flywheel is balanced. You can then attach that to the new flywheel and balance that to the weight and you've now got a flywheel with the right balance factor Work on Alfa V6s at least I was hoping something like that was possible lol. Apparently the mc-2 has the heaviest and strongest Rods that audi did in any 5 cylinder, so they don't like to rev much because of the weight but they're incredibly strong units. Should cope with some small imbalance but hopefully I can get the new flywheel pretty close

If you just need a pin to pick up TDC how hard would that be to add to a different flywheel? Would need balancing after, but it's just a matter of drilling the right size hole and pressing a pin in (possibly with loctite). Are these engines externally balanced or internally balanced? Might need to balance the flywheel anyway. Good point and not something I'd thought about and it turns out they're externally balanced. It would be prudent to get any second hand flywheel refaced anyway so I will get the new flywheel balanced to match the flex plate I've taken off. I'm confident I'll be able to get the flywheel with the correct pin in it which would save a lot of mucking about

Ship-wrights disease.....aka project creep..... oh yeah...... Not relevant now but you can change the wheel bearings in situ with bit of cunning, made much easier by one of those screw press tools. My A6 likes to have front wheel bearings every 100k so I’ve had a bit of practice. Taking the legs off is a huge ball-ache, in situ much quicker. Sounds like you needed to do the other stuff anyway though. Beware the cheap TCAs, the ball joints are rubbish. Buy known brand like Lemforder . What diameter is the arb? If 26mm, good luck finding bushes. Manual box will transform the car for the better as will the suspension refresh. Nick PS. The exhaust probably is stainless. Audi started using it in the late 80s on their higher end cars. My A6 one is mostly original at 24 years 333k, though being diesel helps. I reckon it would still be a ballache replacing them in situ though as you'd have to remove the driveshaft anyway which means either removing the driveshafts or disconnecting the strut from the lower ball joint which is half the job anyway. Either way I'm about to invest in one of those hydraulic press things as I've got the two ball joints as well as all the bushes to replace. I haven't measured the anti roll bar. I'm assuming it's the same as the quattro one in which case there are poly bushes available. The sleeve in the old Bush was so rotten it had crumbled into two pieces. Maybe the exhaust is the original then. The cat seems to be mild steel. According to ETKA the exhaust should have the cat and then two silencers. Mine is straight from turbo to the cat and then cat to the backbox, which is what's making me think it's been replaced. I reckon I'm going to have trouble finding a flywheel as there's seems to be a lot of different ones about and mine has the pin for the sensors. Also my manual gearbox has a cable speedo drive but I need an electronic one. Not sure if I can just remove that end drop the electric on in yet. Probably not because audi
