Thanks for all the replies The car is pretty much identical to this. (apart from the badges) I already have some lowrider style wire wheels lined up so hopefully all will fall in to place on the weekend Have yet to see the car and wheels but hopefully will be happening on Saturday.

Thanks mate, I'll investigate but is it a problem if it doesn't have the 727?

Hello all, I'm hoping there is someone on here with knowledge/experience of the above mentioned cars. I may be buying a 1983 Dodge Diplomat which looks in really good shape but don't know much about them. Are there any areas in particular I need to be aware of? I understand the engine is actually fairly bullet proof but I don't know how they cope with UK (wet) weather in terms of corrosion issues. I know the car passed it's MOT only 2 months ago with no advisories so it looks good in this respect. Any advice greatly appreciated

Yep I agree that the Meguiars stuff seems to work best on the headlamps.

I agree with everything you say about the car's abilities to make you smile. I'm looking forward to getting a few more miles in it under my belt, to see what it can do, especially having read your thoughts above about the TC/ESP and handling. I quite like the Avantgarde grille, but I might spray the grey plastic bits between the chrome vanes black. I do actually like the look of a big three pointed star in the grilles that are sold as AMG. I understand they are not genuine AMG, but I'm contemplating getting one. Yours looks great. I was seriously contemplating making you an offer when you had it for sale recently. Bet you're glad I didn't haha. Yep spraying the plastic on the grille black makes a massive difference. We always used to do this in the old days. Hence why I like the 'normal' grille with only 3 horizontal lines which is how Mercs always had them. Funny you say you want the 'AMG' grille with the big emblem in the centre. That's what my car came with and I got shot of it for about £40! I remember all the others on EBay were expensive and it took me ages to sell, originally trying to sell it for £60. Thanks for the compliments, you're right I'm glad the car didn't sell. I just wanted something older as switching from an E28 BMW felt like a lot of charm was missing. Look forward to seeing the progress

Ah yes Excellent work on the cleaning! You must have been jolly chuffed with yourself after that. They do look good when clean and glossy. I know exactly how you are feeling driving it as I still love mine after 10 months (and 2.5k miles) of ownership. The noise and G force is addictive to say the least! Mine has secondary cats and resonator removed (and remapped) and if not already done to yours, makes it sound more like one of the modern AMGs. I actually have the same grille as you too but bought it intentionally as preferred it to the avantgarde one. My car had an aftermarket grille on when I bought it. The interiors are really hard wearing and always look mint. Regarding the traction control and LSD, the ESP system will brake individual wheels to assist cornering. So it has a sort of electronic diff. You get used to this and once you do the handling of the car is amazing. I've shown friends how you can floor it through some twisties and the car does it all for you, much like a modern car. It's amazing that even 20 years ago, these cars had such a complex set up where the G/Box and engine ECUs are taking info from the T/C and ESP systems to ensure the car is doing what the driver is intending. The AMG mods to the gearbox make a big difference here. I also like how it holds on to the gears when slowing down and sounds lovely downshifting. It still feels strange that a W210 sounds and goes like this! Well done, I hope you have many happy miles in it

Gawd knows! They add 50 bhp donchaknow No seriously, they are one of the more difficult 'mods' to remove. They have sort of grown on me so I'm not overly fussed about them now, but will replace the wings in future.

I doubt it's knackered mate, what's the mileage? It sounds like some components related to choke/cold start are causing the problems... If you clean up the gearbox and monitor, the leak may not be as bad as it first appears

Yep I can confirm that -30mm Apex springs lowered mine a lot more than 30mm! The springs were actually half the (unfitted) length of the originals. I reckon it's a 50-60mm drop in reality. I still have the standard shocks and had the rear lowered by a chap known on PSA forums. It instantly felt more sporty when driving for the first time, but it was a very comfortable cruiser beforehand. It certainly looks a lot better photo sharecertificity.com

This, in a nut shell, sounds sweet. I do have 15inch mondeo steels in my shed but would have to roll the arches i believe? not likely, they're the wrong offset, depends on width and tyre used too. also there is barely a lip on the arches to roll so it doesn't help, if the tyre catches they'll muller the arch itself. Indeed, I have 15s on mine and is lowered. The wheel dimensions are very important. Mine is here: forum.retro-rides.org/thread/184307/1995-peugeot-205-1-8

Thanks for the compliments mate For me it was also a choice between a XJR (X308) and the Merc. Both were offered to me at the same time for exactly the same money. I went for the Merc over the Jag due to the more simple engine with no superchargers, DOHC or VVT like the Jag. As I also had a X308 3.2 Sport I am familiar with the Jags dynamics and interior design. The Merc's cabin is much bigger than the Jags whilst the car is shorter in length externally. It's also better equipped with it's full colour screen/TV/sat nav etc. The handling on the Merc is also in another league compared to a X308 Jaguar. I like the subtle AMG styling on the Merc too where as the Jag only differs externally from lesser models by it's wheels and grille. I did manage to get my hands on some BBS Milan wheels when I owned my X308 which improved the looks greatly, but made the car slower and more thirsty.

Lol, I wasn't on here to slag off someone trying to sell their car. I made a genuine comment.
If it's not for you then fair enough, but I think it's a bit unfair to criticise someone's sale when you are not actually a potential buyer.

now diesels are more de rigueur and will do 70mpg while tugging our retros round, its all good spoke too bloody soon there didnt i. nothing but headlines and hate the last few months. hoping retros/historics get a bit of leeway being statistically insignificant (compared to euro 5 diesel cars i mean) Lol, I was actually reading your comment yesterday and thought similar. Yep I also hope that classics will not be ruled out under any new legislation. I'm sure my non turbo, low fuel pressure diesel, is cleaner than all the modern cars I see on my commute chucking out huge clouds of black smoke. I won't be giving up the Pug if I can help it.
