Ironically the only car brand that i've personally heard a few bad things about and then had them happen (to close family/friends) is a Roooover... but to be fair I think that was due to the k designed engine which included that 'fantastic' (sigh) headgasket! So not the T-Series! Just had a quick look at that engine model and seems a decent underated lump, specially for the price you can pick them up! To be tottally honest Keithyboy i'd like a japaneese engine but would also love a 156 one day....v6 tho (when I'm rich.....to run it!) Thanks for the info nelliem!

I currently have French build quality! 306 n/a diesel and to be fair it's been a cracking little car!
It's funny how some of the countrys cars and their respective 'build qualitys' are judged, like you said your's never missed a beat but iv'e known some people who only buy lets say German and when you say German motors people generally think of quality well built cars. However your always gonna get the odd one which has problems (such as rich's above) it's the luck of the draw it seem's!

It amazes me that in this day and age of computers/auction sites ect that there are still barn finds like this! (I mean that in a good way too!)
Some quality finds there, not least that stash of parts, looks like a mini warehouse!

Only way of finding out is going to have a browse and seeing what kinda condition it is and if its been modified! Have seen some shoddy examples in the paper described as a 'vgc' ect and then seeing it in person......(massive scuffed alloys/chipping/flaking/massive rusty backbox).........and have tried to make a sharp exit! However don't let that put you off because there are some gems out there and if its pretty much standard and looks pretty looked after then it's well worth £650 (but try and get it for 550 )

I'd say best bet give the local scrappys a ring (ones that issue a C of D if its a scrap job) and if its under 50 quid your way (inc pickup) i'd say best bet is put it up in the local ad's or on somewhere free and see if you can get as close to 200 for it, someone might buy it as a do-er-up-er!

Depends where you are in the country as prices vary but I'm sure my mate got close to 100 notes for his car (which was picked up from his house too) but as I say it does vary as when I was looking at getting rid of my old one years ago it was only £40 picked up

If you want a rough guess-estimate (guestimate I believe the cool kids say) i'd say it would be worth anywhere between 600 to 1000ish+ (in the future) depending on the person at the time (if their a collector/enthusiast ect). It looks in very decent condition, is a runner with low miles and the fsh as well as the retrobillity of these kinda cars would mean you have a nice little motor there. The polo is only likely to go up in value (if you take good care of it,hence the '+' above) with the mk4's probably coming down.... your choice on what you want really! Should probably add I'm no expert so my guestimate could be well off, so go with your gut feeling if you have a decent offer!

If you don't mind me asking, what cars do you currently own that u'd be getting rid of? The reason I ask is it would be ideal to gauge where your coming from in terms of spec to what you'd be going to!
I'd say first off tho a 1.9 306 diesel (no turbo if you can find one) They keep going and going with minimal maintenence and low priced available parts, cheap to buy and run 50mpg+. Insurance is very reasonable compared to other cars. Only downsides really are the higher tax band being a 1.9 and it's not fast at all (although not as slow as you'd expect)

I'm no specialist in this area but I would like to think that it would be worth around £800 given the tax test and all round condition/history!

MK1 Fiesta if you can find one (no links I'm afraid!) as when I was looking at quotes was the cheapest thing for me to insure, and believe me I did ALOT of quotes!!
Bad points tho alot that I saw when i was looking they were quite rusted and/or for around 700 quid needed an mot or had a short one! Had one in my family when i was younger, 4 speed gearbox ftw!!

VRS! Fantastic indeed (though only seen reviews personally) but I can see were slipping on the criteria people haha! Having said that when I was looking for my faster car a few years ago the majority of the options at around 2 grand have fallen to under the 1300 mark now so if it is just over will still be a good indication for the future and reference purposes! Also you did a fair bit of work on that vrs for a grand!

Volvo's such as the s40 and the s80 I can see in your sig all seem to be for me personally not the best to insure price wise, well to be honest anything sweedish it appears! However this is through mainstream lenders and havn't had a look at a tailored quote, will do nearer the time of the next purchase! Will agree tho there pretty solid cars and from what you say nice cruisers! Just had a brief look online and the t5 850 option looks epic for an estate...acceleration and mpg fair from the looks of it (seems pretty rare tho and doubt the insurance would be cheap!) Also seems to be a wide range of choices on the Volvo side so definatly worth a check, good call!
Maf- all ideas/thoughts/experiences welcomed!
Imp- bit out of the 1g tag but yeah for the money you do get quite a bit, specially being 2003 and the power ect! Rememeber seeing 2002/3 vectra.....can't quite remember the full details and always get them mixed up but it was standard "not too fast one" but it had a decent spec and for under 1g think there pretty presentable cars! Same as the older Saab 9-5 aero and facelifted 93 (9-3??) version, presentable cars for little money considering! Probably not the best in compromising and pushing the limits but valid claims all the same!

Classic car insurance would be a plus for cost, so things like Sierra's capris ect is a good shout....although as a daily too might not be the best due to limited milage!
Xsara VTS is a bargain for 5 hundred coins! and definatly one for the pre shortlist....list! Just had a look at the stats and performace/price seems pretty fair!
Tragico glad to be of service (not that I made any suggestions!) Hopefully this thread will serve as an idea for people in the future who are after a jack of all trades car....always found it hard looking through car guides online sifting through specs only to find actual peoples findings far more reliable! Focus is a solid option all round, i'd agree there! Heard there pretty fun to drive and a good box ticker! As mentioned a few posts ago, I do fancy going for a german car, prices are closer to the 1g limit which I guess is to be expected as there newer and more sought after than some of the other options, especially being diesel and build quality. Specifically like the look of the bora sport with the arches, value for money too and not as common as the passat!
Out of interest, which other car did you get rid of? I'm assuming that was your more powerful one?

This future short list is getting longer! Good to have the ideas all the same, much welcomed!
Mk2 Golf, my friend used to have one, well two infact a 8v and then had a modified 1.8 Turbo which was nice! Very solid cars all in all and know a few VW nuts so would have help on hand if anything went wrong!
Difficult to choose between the 20v Couple and the Puma given the choice...even tho my head would scream puma for the chasis and overall running but the 20V coupe (especially turbo edition ) is as quick as.....thing that would hold it back slightly for me would be the reliablitly, as I found out with my Fiat, not bad overall but slight little niggly problems.
DieselWeasel - I was in the same boat a few years back when I had my 200bhp machiiine and petrol was just over a quid per litre (and I struggled then) glad I had it as it always put a smile on me face but on the other hand when I think of the miles I did and the insurance cost it does make me think whyyy! Especially in the years ownership I had of it the demand for semi cheap/highish powererd/lowish mpg cars pretty much halved due to fuel/insurance prices ect! Deffinatly say if your going to do it, do it now whilst the cars are as cheap as!
To the people who posted about Saabs, quick slightly off topic question.....how much moola would it take to have a considerable gain from just an ecu map on a 9000? and if so how much would it go up by safely?

Thanks for the replys people!
Had previously looked at alot of the suggestions, particularly the mx5's and pugs (as thats my daily atm) but some nice little choices to mull over also listed. A Saab 9000 are brilliant cars imo but unfortunatly its downfall is fuel, can cost a small fortune if pottering around....but the cheapness of the speed is fantastic! Mgf and Crx's are another couple i've had a look at previously but if I had a crx i'd have to go Vtec for the PHWWARRRRRR sound it produces or else i'd forever want! Mgf was going to be my second convertable of choice (behind an mx5) come the summer (which never arrived + made redundant) though am I right in saying the majority had the K Series Engines?? 2 family memebers had them and you can guess what happened to the head gaskets! Still good for summer cruising if there the right price i guess!
Will remember this thread for when I eventually do up my funds to be able to buy what I would like to call "a two year plus car" sensible mid term thinking! Was thinking something...perhaps...German after having a Italian,Sweedish and French cars......Still unsure but as I say wont be for a while yet due to the money situation unfortunatly!
