Right then retro riders! I need a help with some ideas. My GF wants a car. She had a bike for the past 6 month but now wants to find a car so she can use that more though the winter. Like my self she is not a fan of new cars so wants something old.
Basically the rough guide is.
Retro Cheap - Under £700 With an MOT and Tax would be great! Cheapish to insure - Ok I know at 18 its never going to be cheap. Something with an a series would be great as I know my way round them quite well but then I'm always up for learning to play with something new. don't mind if it needs a little bit of work but don't want anything that needs to be restored. I have enough of my own projects without starting something else haha.
Anyway all ideas welcome. Links to cars for sale would be great as well.
Thanks!

two words - Fiat Panda. Great little cars, fantastic FIRE unit, group 1 insurance, so easy to maintain, and £700 will get something close to a minter

mini - as you know. mk 1 nova. fiat 126 viva avenger
And really weirdly...... GTM coupe. With a 998 they are technically gp 1 insurance. You'd be really lucky to get one for 700 with mot, but I've had 2, one was $565 and the other free.
You might struggle getting classic/kit insurance under 21 tho.

I bought a fiat126 in Poland for £250 and drove it back. It took me a year of thrashing to break it and it's so simple fix!
Or a BMW e30. Cheap as chips.

Thanks for all the replys! had been looking at minis as I have a few of them and know them well but prices have go up so much in the past couple of years. My first mini I bought back in 2008 cost me £640 with 6 months mot and tax. Cant find anything like that now. Anything road going is a grand plus!
Would love a fiat 126! Vivas again very cool but may be a bot to big for her. She wants something small. Had not thought about a panda or nova so will crack open ebay right this sec! Have looked at a few metros but not found anything in budget thats not rotten out is ass. Seems they also seem to be going up in price at the moment too.
One thing I did find which I may go and view soon is a lada riva.
Again thanks for all the replys!

I bought my Mk2 polo for just over £600. Spent a little on making it look nicer and its gorgeous! I was looking at buying a 1.0 k11 micra, but the insurance was £2.3k, whereas this was just £1.4k, nearly £1k less!

Again thanks for all the replys! good point on the minis - they do seem to be going up and up. not that long i purchased a clubman estate with 12 months mot for £550, and an 84 mayfair with decent mot and tax for not much more. certainly changed days

Nissan Micra K10 or K11, cheap as anything (picked up my good condition T&T'd K11 for £300), parts and spares are cheap, decent forum dedicated to them. Insurance can be a little bit more expensive than some for some unknown reason but if you shop about you'll be able to get a good price. Engines are pretty much bombproof and for what they are they go really well too.

Have been looking at a series metros. I did message a chap on here that had a Mk2 Polo breadvan for sale but he didn't get back to me. Your Polo looks lovely. A mate of mine has a mk2 coupe lowered on some starmags.

As above, a Nissan Micra.
If you want A series power, the cheapest way is probably a maestro. If you want old, old, a A35 or Moggy, but you'll probably have to do some work on it.

Although not an easy one to find, you'd do a lot worse than a Datsun 100A, preferably E10 model. Small, economical and very reliable. The engine is quite similat to an A series too and everything on them is easy to fix. Even the clutch only takes about 15mins. You could get a roadworthy one within your budget... it's just a matter of finding one.

MK1 Fiesta if you can find one (no links I'm afraid!) as when I was looking at quotes was the cheapest thing for me to insure, and believe me I did ALOT of quotes!!
Bad points tho alot that I saw when i was looking they were quite rusted and/or for around 700 quid needed an mot or had a short one! Had one in my family when i was younger, 4 speed gearbox ftw!!

Mk1 and Mk2 Metro's, Mk2 and Mk3 Polo coupes/Breadys and K10/K11 Micras are all readily available ofr under a grand, in fact you'll get something with T&T for £700.
Minis are ridiculous money for what you get, look on Ebay and you'll see "project" rust piles for £1000 plus. Up until 4 years ago, I'd always owned a Mini, now the prices are just silly. If you want an A-series, you won't go wrong with a Metty, I had one for 2 years and never missed a beat, cracking little motors which are easy to look after. Check the usual rust spots and the hydrospastic suspension and you can't go wrong.
