Another week, another 600 mile round trip to The North in the Hillman. Don't think I've ever been north of J36 on the M6 before but that next 30 miles is pretty amazing road, paritcularly with a sun setting below cloud level leading to rainbows everywhere. I was mostly working next to a small castle near Penrith/Ullswater then home yesterday via Barnard Castle.

I've been away up t'North for work this week which is most unusual. Obviously took the most sensible car for the 500+ mile round trip.

Yes, its a pantograph engraver, capable (I hope!) of some reasonably accurate light milling. The master goes on the higher table on the right in my picture and the workpiece goes on the lower table. The arms are adjustable so that the ratio can be altered between 1:1 and 16:1. Its an English Machine made by Taylor Hobson who were first on the scene with pantographs at the end of the 19thC. I think this is a mid 1960s machine, probably last used in an industiral setting in the '90s.

Sometime around February one of my cars broke such that it wasn't driveable any distance and I just didn't have the inclination to sort it out. So in the ensuing months I only used it a couple of times locally while I figured out what to do which was probably to sell it. But then I couldn't really do that while it was broken. I think having a proper holiday last month (for the first time in 4 years) managed to re-set me to some extent and so I confirmed that the problem was likely nothing more than a dead prop UJ. A mega quick turnaround by Propshaft Services near Heathrow meant it was roadworthy on the Friday before the RR Gathering. I was actually going to take the other car but then on the Sunday morning it transpired that an engine mount had chosen that moment to fail in that one! So, Hillman it was to the Gathering. In fact I've now driven it around 600 miles in the last 9 days including a machine colleciton mission to Wiltshire yesterday. End result is obviously that selling is definitly postponed as its just too useful a car to let go. Just got to try and sort out all the other things that would improve it again. Oh, and also this week, a car I got a lift to work and back in last year won a special award at Pebble Beach. Which is not something I'd have ever imagined I'd be able to say.

Its good that there is a bell foundry keeping the skills alive. Whitechapel Bell Foundry was the country's oldest continually operating business until it shut its doors a few years ago in controversial circumstances and the premises are sadly neglected at the moment. There are hopes for some sort of proper re-birth rather than the boutique hotel that was on the cards.

A civic in a museum, that doesn't have honda in the name? How could that happen? Was it some celebrities car? No, that was in the Smithsonian Museum of American History. Demonstrating the move to compact imported cars in the 70s I think.

That looks great. Appears to be quite a few of the 'less desirable' body styles that they've been able to preserve rather than eg another Bentley saloon being lost to a Le Mans style recreation. Slightly gauky Bugattis too - English bodywork perhaps?

Love the shot of the chap in the blue Austin, pipe on the go, both rear wheels off the ground 😅 Front left is off the ground too! Its not really an Austin but a 'cycle-kart'. That's a wormhole I feel myself being drawn towards...

A few weeks ago I rolled some of the primer on, the boot, right hand side and bonnet. This was as much an experiment as anything, to see if there was any reaction with the myriad of paints it was going over. It ended up being a couple of weeks before I could get back down and find out, and all seemed good. So there's been some more detail filling here and there and today I've done the boot, other side and bonnet again. I probably used a bit less thinner this time and a much better roller rather than the foam ones which seemed to 'grow' and then fall apart. In fact on that first application a few weeks ago I used three rollers, today just the one. There'll be plenty of rubbing down needed but I think I'm basically going to just keep layering this stuff up until I'm happy and then just do the topcoat over it. Its definitly is getting there.

Possibly the first time I've ever stopped to take a photo of a Renault Clio. In Mayfair this morning.

Is that a Delahaye in the second to last picture? Yes, from the Mullin collection.

I've been sorting out some workholding and doing some trial fitting so I can hopefully do interesting things to steering wheels soon.
