Hey Folks! Another week, another weekly chat, your place for stuff that may not warrant a full thread, or stuff that is just going on right now that you want to share. Busy busy busy again, tickets for the show now online, some website updates still needed. More more more to do on the forum styling. And I've started the garage clean up finally. What's happening in your (car) world? Hopefully less potentially deadly crashing in to fields this week. Previous Thread: forum.retro-rides.org/thread/225779/chat-thread-time-wc-02

Things are happening, although I am not necessarily doing all of them... "that escalated quickly" also the Country Squire let me down! No! Turns out it was not charging. Now my head hasn't been in it right for a little while so I changed out the starter motor relay thinking it was a voltage regulator, then bought a new reg and when I went to fit it found the lead had come off the existing one, and then I remembered replacing it only about a year ago. Ugh. Ah, I have a nice new battery in the car, a spare new voltage reg and I have tested my used spare starter solenoid. Idiot. I've been trying to clean out the fuel tank on the Rover as its been clagging the fuel pump up. And submitting myself for diagnostics which I hope the NHS is better at than I am when it comes to charging faults.

I rewarded myself for not dying, and quitting smoking, with some nice seats that will hopefully be the start of a nice interior.

So I gave up on the Rover petrol tank having found an NOS one on eBay which was cheap enough for me not to dick about any more with the old one.
Hopefully the car will be back on the road "soon"
I may have spotted something else I want instead... But maybe CBA swapping cars round any more.

I don't follow modern car news anymore, I just can't be bothered, so yesterday my wife really surprised me, when she said that after the current vw bus there will be no more!
At least no self developped vw bus, only a rebadged transit built in turkey.
Sounded like an aprils fool to me, I would have never believed that an iconic car like the volksbus could be cancelled only to be replaced by a rebadged competitor product!

I guess I need to do a LTD build thread. I picked up a pair of the very desirable high performance heads - these were 1968 high compression, high flow beasties. The machine shop is looking at them shortly.

I've been away up t'North for work this week which is most unusual. Obviously took the most sensible car for the 500+ mile round trip.

I'm back up to a solid 2¾ cars out of 3 working, had to lend one to my girlfriend when her headgasket let go in spectacular style on Wednesday, (if anyone wants a 116i for cheaps let me know, does still run but I wouldnt recommend it 🤣) replacement getting picked up tomoro. So I fixed my cheap to run Mondeo to still be using a v6 as a daily. Yay.

Used the tr7v8 for a couple of days work this week, tweaks to the timing and mixture have got it running better than it ever has, now pulls smmoothly from 700rpm in top gear and sounds great.

I'll tell you tomorrow. I was just shopping for a new daily, but I've found a car locally, an example of which my wife owned 20 years ago. This one's 26 years old and (it IS a Ford, after all) may well turn out to be a heap of s**t....but it's so ridiculously cheap that I'll probably end up buying it anyway. As I said....I'll tell you tomorrow. I might be somewhat 'back in the room' a couple of weeks short of my 59th birthday

Finally got the correct oil filter for the Maestro. Externally the dimensions can be the same for the 1300 A+ engine, but there's two different screw threads and if you don't know about it you can get caught out. Mine takes the smaller thread, the less commonly listed one for this car for some reason. I also finally sorted out the seat base diaphragms on the Princess, a part that isn't available so I had to get creative with tailoring and upholstery skills. New fix seems to work quite well and the seats feel a lot less saggy than they did even before the original seat diaphragms failed. Not a job I fancy doing again, fitting the springs was a great way to lose the skin off my knuckles.

Sounded like an aprils fool to me, I would have never believed that an iconic car like the volksbus could be cancelled only to be replaced by a rebadged competitor product! It all went a bit mad a couple of years ago. The multivan (posher 7 seat van) got split off from the transporter as it's own standalone product on a different, smaller platform. The id buzz is another smaller lifestyle van 5 or 7 seats, this time electric, being marketed as a replacement for the classic kombi, and the transporter is being left more as the commercial vehicle. It seems odd to kill off the transporter as people pay huge premiums for them (especially as a california) compared to other vans, and with the transit having so many issues when it switched to turkish production a few years back, vw was gaining market share.

As I said....I'll tell you tomorrow. I might be somewhat 'back in the room' a couple of weeks short of my 59th birthday Except I didn’t. Basically the vendor didn’t get back to me as promised, idly scrolling through FB Marketplace (that glistening doyen of online selling….NOT) and found this little gem just eight miles up the road that had been listed some 15 minutes previous. Some of you know me and my penchant for Gallic chod (nine Peugeots and ten Citroens over the years) so it’s probably no surprise to learn that it’s a 23 year-old Peugeot 306D. Two owners, full history, 68500 miles from new. Never failed an MOT, never had as much an advisory. It’s a DW8 lump so 0-60 comes up in minutes, but once you’re up to motorway speeds she’ll sit there at 80 all day long and do 50mpg. For me (I’ve been in the motor trade for the last 6 years so often use new VAG product to come home in) the ideal commuter. Especially since it’s cost me less than a week’s wages! Winner winner chicken dinner. No plans for it other than keep it tidy/watered/oiled and enjoy it.

Weird, isn’t it? I’ve been on RR for 17 years at the end of this month. If I’d have bought a 17 year-old car in 2006 it would have been a 1989 something or other. And I’d just turned 42, and I’m now starting to stare down the barrel of the big six-zero…..
