And we're on the road! The (Chris Pollitt tenure) maiden voyage went ahead last night, taking in the sights, sounds and undulations of the M5, M4 and M25. There was even a bit of Bracknel too. One word that springs to mind is 'wafty' as this thing just glides along. It's a little annoying that the rear wheels are out of balance but that's a minor niggle. On the whole though she's smooth, quiet and comfier than a buxom lady's bosom. Yup, it's mega. Can't say the same for the fuel 'economy' mind, but that's no big shocker - it's actually a bit better than I thought it would be to be honest. All I need to do now is lower it a bit, buy a couple of bits of trim, give it a damn good clean then just enjoy. Retro German motoring people, it's where it's at!

Cheers Matt. I must make that real.
Yes, buy one, they're awesome in every sense of the word.
Weather permitting I plan to give the car a damn good clean and polish this weekend, inside and out. I've also got my hands on a decent SLR so I should have some decent pictures to show you all on Monday, too.

That is the shizzle fo sho ..and so far, including the original price, road tax, mot and insurance it stands me in at £602. Now, you were saying... Thanks for all the comments though guys, I'm bloody loving the old tank. It's a great feeling to jump into your own Merc at the end of the day and waft home. And after all, no one who sees me needs to know it's an ex-abandoned £200 survivor! Chris

Love the wheels! I've always said the W126 is quite probably the best luxury car ever made. I had a 560SEL and boy do I miss it

So, I had a day of cleaning with my wonderful assistant yesterday... ...all while the Zodiac looked on, unimpressed... The weather really was on my side yesterday so I thought I'd set to cleaning the old girl and making her look respectable. Up until now she hadn't been subjected to any kind of freshen-up, mainly down to time, inclination and curse word-poor weather. Anyway, yesterday was different thanks to an odd, vaguely familiar ball of fire in the sky. You just gotta love the comedy extended angle you can achieve on these Mercedes bonnets! First was the engine bay - just to clear out all the leaves and twigs from where it had been sat for so long. Oh, and I had to change the battery too (the one that was on it wasn't mine, so I robbed the Z's battery). That's all though, engines are functional and as such, I've never seen the point in cleaning them. Next up, the interior. This was full of 20+ years of other people's bottom fluff. Not what I wanted. Then the windows... ..and then it was time for some Meguiars Tech-Wax. Oh, and some Wonder Wheels too (which must have changed formula over the years as I don't remember it being that good). The result of a few hours graft was this... I moved the old car-phone so it was closer to where Lucie sits. She had much fun prentending to ring Mummy, Nana, Kathy and Bruce! Obligatory WW air-freshener... Oooh, data... Representin'... Original dealer goodness... So, that's how she stands. I guess I better crack on with lowering it now...

She had much fun prentending to ring Mummy, Nana, Kathy and Bruce! This made me smile She's so funny! Awesome car mate, was great to see it in the flesh on Saturday and looking even better for a clean. Even just sitting in it felt grand, bordering on regal. Little touches everywhere to show they built the car to a quality unmatched by nearly all other manufacturers. Watching it silently waft out of the Area 52 yard made me a tiny bit envious and for a moment I wondered if I had enough charge in my phone to look them up on eBay to see if I could snag one. Pimp & style all in one awesome package. A package the size of small continent, but that's what makes it so damn cool. Give that girl of yours a big hug from me.

Well, it's been in daily use for a few weeks now and so far everything has been hunky-dory. She runs sweet, she's not too bad on fuel (for an aircraft carrier) and wafting along in this has to be one of the most pleasant ways of travelling. I love it. Best £200 I've spent in a long time. I'm off to Portugal for a few days now, so the old girl will have to sit in Long Stay at Gatwick for a a bit. Once I get back though, there will be new trim, badges, tyres and of course, lows to address. Until then, peace out! Chris

Newbie first poster here!!! Ive looked at this site for years and never bothered to sign up as hardly ever get chance to use a computer other than at work. Managed to find this thread off the abandoned cars thread!! Ive had one of these old buses and i can concur they really are magnificent to drive, mine was cream leather and in silver. Paid 400 holes for her and she stood me for 3 years, all i did was MOT it and put fuel in it!! Top speed out of one of these? Mine went up to 140 although my mate wont give me the 140 as the sat nav clearly said 137 When they go wrong though they go wrong in style. First the indicators inexplicably stopped working. No problem thinks i. A trip to Halfrauds for a 5 quid flasher unit should sort it? No joy. Contact the main stealer. How much for a flasher unit? 80 holes and its about as big as the keyboard I'm using to type this. Needless to say i didnt get one and drove for months without any indicators. You could say i was the subject of many a verbal. And if that wasnt good enough, it then decided it wouldnt change up out of first gear (auto) so my speed was limitted to 20mph EVERYWHERE. Bloody frustrating to say the least. Changed the fluids and filter. No joy. Spoke to merc techs and they reckoned the box was shafted. I wouldnt mind but the car i had before this was a W116 1978 merc and exactly the same thing happened with this too!! I gave up in the end and now drive a transit van. Good luck with the merc dude, they're great cars, even better when I'm 5ft 3 and i go to get in my car with mates and they say ''this aint your car is it?'' or ''are you sure you can see over the wheel?'' To which i used to say, yep it is my car and i CAN see over the wheel as its got electric seats. Hows your grey mondeo these days?

Thanks for the comments guys.
I know it's too tall, I've just not had the time to do anything about it yet. I will though, hopefully.
The old girl is pretty ill at present. She's developed a fairly major leak but I'll be buggered if I can diagnose it. It seems to be coming from the front of the engine, collecting on the under tray and then splashing all over the manifold which results in a James Bond style smoke-screen.
Thing is, none of the fluis are dropping in level despite there being a huge puddle under the car. PAS, ATF. Oil, brake fluid...they're all fine.
It's going into a specialist next week to see what's what.

Thing is, none of the fluis are dropping in level despite there being a huge puddle under the car. PAS, ATF. Oil, brake fluid...they're all fine. How is the coolant level? I had Sierra with an oil leak which didn't cause the oil level to drop significantly, I did have to keep topping up the coolant which I put down to a seeping rad - turned out it was also losing coolant through the head gasket into the oil, the amount of coolant getting in to the oil was just about enough to keep the level looking right.
