In the clearout topic from nigelbickle a couple of days ago, 1 car he wants to sell kinda grabbed me. The Standard Pennant. From what he told me, and I found some info on it on the interwebz, it's based on a Triumph Herald technically. He also directed me to the Standard owners club, which gave me some info, but i'm looking for as much info as possible! The Corolla is almost finished now, and i'm looking into something new to tinker with. And i'm thinking to go british after all my Japanese cars. Anyone can shed a light on these cars? How are they to drive (i'm used to my '74 Corolla!), how are they for parts? Reliability? Modifying? I'll leave these here: www.standardmotorclub.org.uk/images/eights/pennants/holkham/pennant2.JPG[/img]

all my tools are metric and I can't weld ;D If you take on anything British those are two things you'll need to rectify, if not now, then further down the line. Sadly, can't give you any specific info on the Pennant.

Its not based on the Herald - its precedes it. The Herald (running gear) is based on the Standard!
Its a Standard 10 in a poshfrock. Plenty of info out there on those...

I'm gonna go ahead and admit that I've never heard of one before. They look like cool little cars, I love that black one. A '50s racer look would be awesome on one!

*waits for Seth to arrive* Hey, I'm not an encyclopedia! I suspect NigelB probably knows more than me about what Herald/Spit bits can be made to fit. There's also "substandard" on here who I think owns that black one (which is a 10 rather than a Pennant) Doctor, I can imagine the driving experience is pretty typical for a small '50s British car. Slow, bad brakes. wondering steering etc. Comfy though I expect. Reliability will be directly proportional to maintenance and common service parts are likely all available. For modifying the Herald/Spitfire upgrades would be the obvious but I am not sure what bolts in/on. These have a solid back axle (as opposed to the later cars independant) but I think diff gubbins are swappable.

I had a standard 10, it was purple with blacked out windows, delocked doors and red velvet interior etc etc, few period tuning bits on it and it went okish, it had spitfire discs on the front and big alloys on it, 325x15's on the back. Front wheel fell off in Billericay once.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

A long time ago in a galaxy far away... I too used to own a Standard Ten, Dove grey with red steels, 1300 Spitfire engine... sold it to a guy in Ashford, Kent and it's the one car I wished I'd never sold - FTF696 where are you now?
I'm struggling to remember in detail now what was done as I sold the car in 1987!
The original front drums were swapped for early Spitfire (MK1) discs as these are a direct swap unlike later ones which will fit but you need the early Spitfire steering arms to make it work as the A-arms on the Standard are not the same as the Spitfire.
The original diff was swapped for a Spitfire diff - they are a bolt-in swap too. The 948cc engine was replaced with a 1296cc Spitfire lump and I have a vague recollection of having to change the engine plate but I may be wrong on that.
Actually it would be worth contacting JH on the NSRA site as he probably knows as much about parts swapping on these cars as anyone. He used to have a really nice Standard 8 which was originally a black 4-door (known as The Raven) which became a baby blue 2-door.

hey jalopnik - I might possibly know who owns your car
a few years ago we sold a dolly engine and box to a guy called matt (I think) he was using a standard as a daily and the engine had grenaded - would definately be in the kent sort of area, as he was a mate of klunk and roland
by all accounts it's still going strong, or at least it was at the essex swapmeet last year

oh yeah, and you should go for it thomas!!
- iirc, I remember being contacted by a guy who was autotesting his standard, and wanted an anglia back axle to upgrade to a stronger diff / shafts - depends if you wanted big power, or just a nice little mild cruiser?
