First a quick bit of back ground to explain how I got to where I am,Initally I got into my XR tin tops, rather than RS turbo's due to insurance and their habit to be expensive when they do go pop. My first being this and got tweeked to this and sadly ended up like this so with the insurance money I bought another MK34 this time in white, which had rather a lot of this so got rid, and bought this

The Plan?Well initally it was to be my second car, but since losing my company car allowance, and no longer needing to do a 300 mile round trip per week to the head office in Banbury. I have decided that over winter I shall prepare this car to be my daily driver. Am I mad? Can these cars be a daily driver without disolving like a slug in a salt bath? It will live in a garage, and do the school run each day, as I work from home. So won't be kept outside in all weathers. My dead line is the 1st of April 2011 to complete the work, get it MOT'd and taxed, it does have a current MOT till april 2011 already. My high level plans are; - fix any rust - fully rust proof the vehicle - make it as water tight as possible - service - fix any niggles Jobs already identified are; - remove electric fuel pump, (this is a carb engine)
- remove wiring loom and either replace with correct loom, or trim off the "excess", it would seem at some point this car had a turbo lump fitted
- fix heater blower, has stopped working
- intermitant setting for front wipers has stopped working
- rear demister has stopped working
- got a leak the drivers foot well gets wet
- rear lights don't always work
- oil light stays dimly lit some times with ign off
- dashboard lights don't all work
- sort out something for breather from the valve cover, as the carb has an K&N filter, so the breather is currenlty venting t the air

Nice project there . Reminds me of our old XR3is. My father had a mint Caspian Blue (I think it was that anyway) MkIII XR3i which got pinched. Second one was a Mercury Grey 89 Spec XR3i. Rust started to take hold of that car although it did serve us well (and to those good people it was loaned to) for over 60,000 miles. My MkIV Cabrio was also good fun. Enough to make me wrongly consider an RST again... As for the dash lights, I reckon that will definately be down to the wiring additions and/or a poor earth? As for the fuel pump, why remove it? Out of the classics I had, an electric fuel pump (albeit the SU pump) made starting on cold mornings miles easier (ask Rob about his Dolly Sprint and how that didn't start too well despite having mint carbs and points setup right). On my Midget 1500, the electric pump made it a much nicer car to live with (no cranking for what seemed like an eternity).

I'll need to confirm this, but when I looked under the car it did not appear to be wired up, and I can't hear it. I also thought carb fed cars used the vacuum of the carb to draw fuel through, and a fuel pump would make to much fuel pressure.

Looks very tidy for the age, surely must have lived under cover for most of it's life? I've seen many never cars with tin tops with worse floors than yours! Brave man for pulling out the wiring loom tho, I would be bricking myself by that point!!

looks fairly tidy. If it's carb it should be running a manual fuel pump which is driven off a lobe on the cam?
I used one everyday for a while a couple of years back with no bother. Mine was injection but imo the carb ones are better. If the auto choke works they are fine even in winter, I was never a fan of the manual choke convertions.

Day 3 done a little more today. Loom is all out now radiator out as well will have to see how this looks once I have cleaned it all up. But so far doesn't seem bad inside the expansion tank for the radiator, lots of gunk and the coolant I drained out, glad I did, have run water through all the pipes and the radiator till it ran clean coming out.

Good to see another mk3 cabrio getting a full resto, she is still very solid, infact most cabs are as thet were built by Karmann in Germany and the steel used was of better quality.
Keep updating with lots of pics and keep in mind that mk3 cabs are getting a bit thin on the ground now.

God has it been that long! right some updates. A pulled back and going away for the half term has hindered progress somewhat. But enough excuses Rear valance patched up. Please remember these 2 patches will eventually be hidden by the rear bumper. The holes around the rear light opening sorted The spare wheel well patched up (ideally a fresh panel would be welded in, but I don't trust my welding skills for the spare wheel no to fall through the floor the first spped bump I hit, and I cannot afford to pay anyone,. It will do for now, this won't be visible and this is no concours car) Rear quarter repair And I have been spending some cash. new front grilles to replace my old ones. They will need painting grey to match though New sill trims and the correct gear stick centre piece to match my dash
