a friend of mine has a Fiat Panda, and since they are not good in car technics, i service the car for them. I can work on Toyota's blindfolded with one hand tied on my back, but Fiat's are a bit different then what I'm used to! It started to idle really badly lately, and cutting off at some traffic lights, but sometimes nothing is wrong with it and it drives and idles fine! It's this engine, complete with a green box labeld ECO or something, i suspect that unit, but i don't know for sure. Anyone can point me in to the right direction?

the problem is well known, you can find it between the front and the rear bumper ;D But that Ecobox seems to fail quite often, i would look into that ... other than that, a 75 BHP fire engine can cure the problem ....

bad idling is just a fiat quirk. problem disappears and reappears. not driven an singlepoint fiat that doesn't.
either increase the idle so it doesn't notice or just live with it. generally a service seems to cure it for a week.

well, the bad idling ends in a car which stalls and is near on impossible to start again! At first i thought it was because they didn't know how to work with a carb engine, but it happend to me too, and i couldn't get it started either!

Head over to fiatforum.com/panda-classic/ they are a friendly bunch and there's plenty of technical knowledge on there. In fact if you search the forum you may find similar threads which also carry a solution in the replies.

My money would be on the Vacuum Advance Unit on the distributor (the rusty round thing, with a pipe out the top), as these are well known for bad running/stalling, and a replacement is only about £20.
Try shop4parts.co.uk for the bit

i had the same problem with mine many many years ago, and I'm almost certain we replaced the vacuuum advance magic thing and it sorted it, other then that you could drive the little blighter flat out everywhere (kinda had to) and it wouldnt bust! it was even the same colour as that one. i loved the hamock rear seat.
