Been thinking on the way home tonight. Imagine that the budget went very differently indeed, and the following happened. Peak oil has not just been reached, it's past and no-one told us. At current rate of consumption, in 5 years all the oil will be gone, forever. This is, obviously, a bit serious, so serious measures have to be applied. From september, the sale of cars becomes illegal, other than for scrap. New car production is halted immediatly, 3 months remain to trade around to get your last car ever. Fuel will become scarce. Running on veg oil is outlawed because eating is more important, spares will be plentiful as everyone gives up and walks instead, no more DVLA or MoT either. Do what you have to to survive and drive, but as long as there is law and order you can't have a different car. So... what is it going to be? Economical survivor, or out in a blaze of glory? Personally, I'd want my mk3 cortina. It's a good shell, solid bumpers front and back, room under the hood for a bigblock and a charger for when I have to outrun the great humungous.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

haha excellent call for a daft thread Scary... mine would be a small camper of some description so I wouldnt need to worry about the running costs of heating a house using fuels other than oil (as obviously Electricity would also be hideously expensive by now as well) so my call would be small PETROL camper (hydrogen from water anyone?) and a large gun grr found some decent small camper ics on google but couldnt get them across?? do you people save the pics and upload them to photobucket or copy its adress somehow?

One of these... ...because that's not just any E38. That's an E38 'Protection' so it's armoured, the fuel tanks can't be pierced, the tyres work when cut, the glass is bulletproof, the doors are armour plated, the floor is land-mine protected, it has it's own oxygen supply should you end up in the drink and, albeit at the cost of some fuel, it goes like stink. After all, fuel will become currency, the world will become not too dissimilar to that of Mad Max's, albeit with some 'law' (although they'll be outnumbered and over run soon enough) so only the strongest will survive! Hmm, something powerful but economical would be order of the day. However, a heavily armed HiLux would be cool

I'd be there brewing my own ethanol/alcohol/whatever from something and having a raving time. If not, I'd park all the cars out on the front garden for ever, and add them to the 'abandoned' thread thirty years down the line.

Hmmm, great time for a ferret? Or maybe something a bit bigger that has the added advantage of running on almost any combustible liquid

1989 Peugeot 205. You know, the one that was parked in a ditch on the campsite at RRG'17... the glass is always full. but the ratio of air to water may vary.

Awesome thread! Not technically a car, but this: Big target with all that valuable fuel in the back, but who's going to attack something that looks like that. Petrol party at my rig guys, you're all invited Otherwise, if I had to choose a car, can I have Bumblebee? Pretty sure he doesn't even need fuel... edit: Great minds, Foxy ;D

Well seeing as everyone will of course at this stage only eat fried, battered and quickly re-heated packaged synthetic food, I should imagine there would be gallons and gallons of waste cooking oil to run the Hilux I would no doubt get, and I'm sure the 106s would cope just as well so keep them. Of course if by some miracle we all turned organic, there would be lots of raw methane to process and run a conversion on. Probably still be a Hilux though.

Mk3 Granada (Preferably an Estate) 4x4 with a 2.5td engine! Big and comfy enough to live with forever, plenty of space for "things acquired", hard as nails engine which'll run on rape seed oil and plenty of spares! Some Spring assistors, some Banded 16" Steels and some Knobbly Tyres.

Well when this actually happens, I'm gonna (in theory) invest in a thing that extracts hydrogen from the atmosphere and run hydrogen fuel cell engines in cool looking cars. ;D
But for the last 6 months I'll take this: (Image is massive, have a link)

i'd have to go with either a mk4/mk5 cortina (probably keep the one i have) or a mk2 granada estate depending on the shortage of fuel, just about any engine could be dropped into the cortina and still be useable, from 1.1 kent to v6 v8 etc realistically the Granada would take a 1.6 pinto, but not much smaller capacity would pull it the head would suggest something with carrying capacity - i nice-little-earner when most of the population doesnt have access to any transport
