More problems for you to help me solve if you would be so kind Friends Landy, 300TDi, R380 box. He has had a couple of instances recently where he could not get into gears due to clutch not releasing drive, this would solve itself quite quickly with no interference from us! It would drive happily after this. But... Today it drove up to his house where it was parked while it was loaded up and then refused to drive at all ?? Towed back to the yard where it now sits awaiting the spanners. Clutch feels ok, there were no bangs, crashes or rattles, it just does not drive anymore. All gears can be selected whether clutch up or down or engine running or not? Clutch master has fluid, engine runs fine with no noises. Thank you in advance

Right then.....first off before thinking its a clutch problem and dropping the 'box out just check the input gear inside the transfer box. Should be a round cover on the rear of the transfer box held by 6 or 8bolts, take it off and the gear should just pull out(twist as you pull). Check the internal splines for wear and the input shaft also as its a common problem of excessive wear due to poor lubrication. If all seems ok there, then it might just be the clutch centre has been ripped out.

Make sure the transfer box isnt in neutral..... Could be busted driveshaft. Do the props turn when its in gear and running?

Sounds like the clutch - check that the clutch actuator actually moves (so that it engages when you lift the pedal). After that, it's probably an engine-out job - as suggested, it could be that the splines or centre of the clutch have died, so the driven plate isn't turning the gearbox input shaft. Alternatively, it could be the gearbox itself.

if it is a split the box and engine job i'd recommend taking the box off the back of the engine, it's the way I chose on my Disco to do the clutch and only took me 6 hours, on the drive at home.
Just stripped out the centre console and dropped the box with and engine crane through the door.

Couple of obvious issues spring to mind, first up the already mentioned g/box output shaft and transfer input gears stripping - common problem LR now sell a drilled input gear to address the problem. The other one relates to the clutch arm, where the ball on the actuator rod breaks through the arm - Never actually seen it happen but the aftermarket bods are now selling "H/D" versions - standard item with a second skin welded on the back!.
