Ok so its come to the point where I need a car, the yaris is good on fuel etc, holds on in the corners like its on rails and tears your face off when you slam the anchors on but everythings so light it feels like your playing a game or something! Blurgh! Anywho.. I'm after something different and obviously retro. I've got a few cars floating around in my head that I feel may fit the bill. Bearing in mind I'll be 21 this month and only driving for a year insurance will be a factor but I'm resolved to the fact that I'll have to pay alot so don't mind tbh. First up E30 - 320i guise preferably. Likes: RWD, 6 pot, look awesome slammed, good choice of wheels etc Dislikes: I assumed parts would be expensive, this true? Next... MA70 Supra - non turbo Likes: Its a fecking supra!! Loved the MA70 ever since I saw one layed up in the village Dislikes: I'll end up losing my license, Hard to find an manual, imports, probably been ragged Next... 300ZX - Non turbo Likes: Sounds awesome, my dads always been into these but never got around to getting one so would be cool to go do some track days with him, looks like a super car so Chicks'll dig it Dislikes: I'll end up losing my license, again hard to find a manual Next... Delica L300 Likes: Toured NZ's south island in a master ace and been after a forward control ever since (by all accounts the delica is a much better machine too) can go greenlaning with me mates Dislikes: I doubt it'll fit on the drive (minor problem ) OK some more conformist cars... First up... K10 Likes: After Ian's k10 I've seen these in a new light and got a few ideas to try Dislikes: Until those ideas come to fruition id have to drive it around Next... 106 XSI Likes: Chuckable, might be fun tracking it now and again, Gotten acquainted with them after fitting countless "sub's in da back init!" Dislikes: Bit chavvy to start with although that can be remedied So thats my list so far, personal opinions well and truly welcomed on both the cars and me lol or if you could think of anything I may have overlooked feel free to suggest something off the wall, poke fun or whatever! Fankoo! ;D

Hi Dave,
Just a quick point - unless you've got a height restriction on your drive, the Delica will fit if the 300ZX or Supra can fit (Supra is longer & wider than a Delica AFAIK)
I could ramble on all day about the benefits of the Delica and still think its one of the most complete vehicles I've ever owned (e.g. yesterday did a very comfortable 500 mile, 15hr parts collecting mission filling the interior with sandblaster, extraction fan, gearbox, trolley etc....and all without any fuss or bother)
One minute you're lugging all your mates around on a fantastic road trip somewhere, the next camping out of it down at the coast, then doing an airport run with 6 passengers and all their luggage, then some fun off road, loading it up with stuff for the tip (and being allowed in because its not a van) and maybe even some rescue missions in floods/snow because its awesome at that as well!
However, I'm going to say keep the Yaris and focus all your attention on the Chevette. Buying a retro daily is a fantastic idea except you'll be spending money keeping it going, wanting to mod it in some way or another and all of this will divert money and time away from the Chevette. Not to mention the extra money you'll be forking out in fuel & insurance for any of the above (except the K10 and possibly XSi)
If your Yaris is anything like my Mum's one then you're onto a winner! In 10 years its only ever needed (apart from servicing) a new battery, some tyres and some wipers. That's it! Nothing has ever gone wrong and it starts & runs like a brand new car....when I borrow it, I struggle to get below 50mpg and can easily get 70mpg out of it.
OK so it might not be the most charismatic car ever, but its not bad and it gives you more time & money for the proper project.
I'm speaking as someone who is selling up some 'distractions' and will be buying a modern, reliable & economical daily soon so that I can dedicate more time & money to the real projects.
If, however, you're determined to get something from your above list then probably a tidy E30 318is which should hold value, be a lot of fun, return reasonable MPG, be reliable and not too expensive on parts/servicing (lots of spares avail through the E30Zone)

All good points but the use of the yaris will soon be coming to an end, my mums got a new job which means she needs it at 8am every morning and I only finish at 8am so I do NEED a car unfortunately.
Have you heard any news on the L300 you mentioned at the last play day Bruce?

I'm with MM here, but i would be getting a cheap mid 90s hack that will tie you over winter, and that you can use and abuse, something like an Escort or Astra. Then you can put all your energy into the Chevette

keep the Yaris, do this: But really... 1. BMW E30, parts are not expensive. Nice cars. Buy a good one and you won't go far wrong. So many ways to go cool with one of these. 2. MA70 Supra, not that fast. Your licence should be fine. Cool looking cars. Always reminds me of a 3rd Gen Firebird. Plenty of potential. Check your insurance before you get too excited. 3. 300ZX. non-turbo isn't that fast is it? Insurance will kill you though. 4. L300. I know nothing about them. 5. K10 Micra. Horribly unsafe in an accident. Only car to get minus points on NCAP. bland. Keep the Yaris. 6. Pug 106XSi. I drove a Pug 106. It was horrid. No idea what the fuss is all about. MaxPo kids used to love them because of the free insurance deals when new. I know a few people had a "known problem" with the gearbox as well.

I had an Audi 80 like that one, but a Saloon. Probably the least inspiring car I have ever owned. And thats saying something. Boring, boring, boring. And despite full VAG service history the motor was dead by 96K miles.

Something else to think about: This is my 'daily' car that I use when I don't need the Delica: I bought it because of the following points: > Cheap to run & maintain - very economical, great access to used parts etc....plus new parts still quite cheap > BAGS of fun to drive! A real hoot that handles well, goes really well and still doesn't hurt the fuel economy too much when driven with vigour! > Retro-ish & fairly rare. Tidy AX GT's are getting harder to find (esp the Mk1) so its nice to have something a little unusual & funky (check out the interior below for a slice of genuine late 80's style!) > Cheap to tax & insure - classic car policy is £90 fully comp for the year for me, tax is the lower bracket so not as painful compared to most other hot-hatches of the era (many of which are slower than this!) > Good resale value - as mentioned above, with Mk1 GT's getting harder to find prices won't drop much if at all. In fact if you buy well you could easily make some money on one. > Pretty good spec.....alloys, central locking, electric windows, sunroof etc... The build quality maybe isn't up there with something like an E30, but mine has only really been little niggles like the blower fan not working on setting #1 and certainly no major problems from them if they are looked after. The 1.4 engine is pretty bulletproof. Just thought I'd throw that one in for consideration seeing as is falls into the cheap to run/own/maintain category yet is very high on the fun factor. It's even pretty good on long journeys. I've done a few parts collecting stints in it....400 miles in a day with no worries - cruises at 80+ on (private) motorways all day etc....

A friend of mine had an AX GT when we were seventeen. He was the envy of the school car park, he left our 1.0 Novas for dust.

I'd steer clear of the Supra and the 300zx. The Supra has a decidedly unhealthy appetite for head gaskets. Although they do take to a 1J/2J swap rather well. The 300zx is a grand car to drive. But they can be a right pain in the underpants region to work on. Space can be a hard commodity to find.
Diggin' the hot hatch idea. Especially the 106. Although that may be because we never got them over here. Reclaim some more cool cars from the bogan/chav brigade!

Zut alors! I remember getting a ride of a fat lad at school who had an AXGT. It was still fast with 20 stone of remedial class driver at the wheel. It was also held in high regard for being totally better than the rich kids mg metro!

Why not consider the 106GTi? These are really cheeky little cars, and totally different to a standard 106 in the way they drive.

I'm liking the pocket-rocket idea - the 950cc Mk1 Fiesta I bought for SWMBO is waaaay more fun around town than anything else I've got. Give it a 5-speeder (planned) & it'd be decent enough out of town too.. How about this in the For Sale section at the moment.. Edit: [/positivity] that Yaris is the most horrible thing I've ever seen [positivity] HC.

Id go for a 106 or if your over 5" 10 a 205 XS. Great fun, cheap to run.
Wouldnt bother with the 320 as it's thirsty and not that fast may as well go 325 as it's about the same on Juice. Have you looked at E36 318 iS's? they are a good hoot!

my money would go on a 309 gti - much cheaper to run than an e30, supra or 300zx and arguably just as much fun! - one of the best handling fwd cars ever made - galvanised body means no rust in most cases i struggle to think of disadvantages?
