e30, maybe the 318is rather than the 320i? The 2.0 is indeed a straight 6 and sound lovely but aren't quick, slower than the 1.8is in fact which is essentially the 16v 1.8, superb engines, gotta be the best choice is insurance of a 325i is an issue. On the other hand, what about an e28? I miss the point of the ax gti or the 106 as they are essentially the same as your Yaris no? Light and fun but you said you wanted something more substantial?

I think he's more talking about the weight on the controls of the car. I don't know about the Yaris, but the steering and brakes on my Mum's Rav4 are incredibly light. Yes, AX is a small light car, but it won't have power steering or over-assisted brakes so it probably won't feel as game-like to drive. You will also get feedback in spades.

Plus the fact that he will be losing the use of the Yaris soon hence his quest for another car.
I've had many many cars over the years and still think the AX GT is the absolute best all rounder for the money when it comes to fun, economy, running costs, driver involvement, residual value, ease of maintenance and even practicality.
Something like this will be highly entertaining but also easy enough on the wallet to allow you to concentrate your time & money on the Chevette. The AX GT is the first car I've owned that I haven't wanted to modify. That speaks volumes for the car and for the other projects that have benefitted,

I'd steer clear of the Supra and the 300zx. The Supra has a decidedly unhealthy appetite for head gaskets. Although they do take to a 1J/2J swap rather well. The 300zx is a grand car to drive. But they can be a right pain in the underpants region to work on. Space can be a hard commodity to find. I CBA to read through the whole thread, so don't know if anyone else has said this. The headgasket problem was mainly on the turbo's (which you're not looking at) and caused by factory not tightening the headbolts enough. If you went for one and it'd had the head gasket done, you'd be especially safe. I'd not worry in the slightest personally with a non-turbo. It'd probably be the car I'd get out of that selection too. And I drive an E30! Don't bother with an E30 less than the 325 IMO, I've got a 318iS and I could leave a 320 behind easy!

As others have said, if your looking at an E30 go for a 318 (318is ideally although the 8v's arnt bad either) or a 325. 320 is a poor half way house, little more performance, much heavier on fuel. Both the Supra and the 300zx are potential money pits. Dare I suggest a 2.0 Sierra? Twink (although not as tunable) gives good fuel, economy decent performance and IMO great to drive ;D

Sierra - here we go again! He has an illness, it's not his fault.
