Having spent today at Preswold hall on a 911 experience 2.25minutes (they call it a day but that is all the driving you get) I'm bitten by thew trackday bug, and my brother fancies in on it.
I fancy retro rwd and fun, Maybe one of these. MK1 MR2 (Tatty one with ticket should be cheap enough). Volvo 340 1.7 strong, cheap, no scene tax quite yet. Volvo 740 turbo saloon. Quick and can be made quicker and lowering springs are expensive.
But my brother suggests an Escort 1.8 SI or maybe an older cheap Focus. I want something to drive back and forward to the track and beat any lumps out with a wheel brace, he wants to trailer it behind his shogun.
Thoughts on this. Mods would be new shocks, pads, set of budget lowering springs, debox the exhuast leaving one in, and a drainpipe diy cold air kit (I have cheap mesh cone filter in me shed) and a pair of whatever buckets come up on the bay with harnesses and strip out the interior.
This would be done on a super cheap budget so sadly no RWD escort action, or engine swappery for now.
I don't like french cars, and he seems to have something against anything later than the last escorts and not a ford.

Nissan Primera eGTbor eZX, 150bhp, superb handling thanks to its multilink magical suspension on the front, 1135kg, a good one you can get for £500. Loadsa performance and suspension parts avalible.
Escorts are tincans and the 1.8 couldn't blow the skin off a rice pudding. Focus' same slow unless you fork out for the ST170 and they're as retro as tomorrow will be.

I did consider the Primera, I have had heard good things about them, and seen for myself, in a highspeed convoy from a funeral of a car nut (cancer not car crash) to Wetwang Chippy for private wake (his favourite chippy) that an ex rental Primera estate wasn't totally embarressed sandwiched in between an 850 T5R and a Merc E series 320 turbo diesel. Some silly speeds were attained arround those lanes, and while he couldn't brake as much as the gruntier cars, it held the speed better through the corners.

Mine will hit 140mph and do a standing quarter in 16.1 in standard tune, ones with an intake and exhaust will manage low 15's,
The estates have curse word suspension underneith they're practically a different car. If you thought that was ok then a Saloon eGT/ZX would blow your socks off.

What about a e36 318is, they handle great and if you stripped it out it'd be quite a weapon 150bhp & very cheap now. Had one of those for a while was a good car, mine had done 181k and still ran sweet.

favorit, weighs 750kg with some easy carpet stripping, 90bhp easily enough reached, lowering springs very cheap, 4x100 and already come with cold air feed. the £200 for a ticketed one average price will leave lots of change for track tyres, buckets and uprated pads.
I'd also back the E30 suggestion as in England you can get them cheaply enough
Or a Civic esi. might even pick up a vtaaaaaaaak one for cheap enough and they are easily lowered, and pretty sharp.
alfa 75? get the 2.0 injezzione and strip the life out of it. touring car stance ftw. plus you get the 'i own an alfa' chat-up line.
or a rover 220 coupe, 115brake standard i think or more from the 2.0L? quick car, good backup of go-fast bits?

liking the e30 idea ;D what about merc 190? (although they are pretty heavy)
surely a sierra would work? loadsa pinto go faster bits out there for the 4 pot sohc and a v6 swap isnt hard or expensive. decent springs etc are cheap. ford wheels are plentiful and used panels arent hard to find....

I then wanted to start cleaning the interior as it stinks of wood (the material not the smell of a boner) best quote ever!

You cant go far wrong with a 190e 2.3-16 185bhp standard and LSD, or ASD on the later models like mine. Very good for if you want to do a bit of drifting ;D

I think the mr2 ideas a good one or an X19 for top handling retro fun. I'd also add by trailering a car you'll be able to give it some stick without being worried about getting home.

I can endorse the E30 318i recommendation - awesome rwd retro fun! Sadly I have to part company with mine due to impeding redundancy/new job issues Actually... let me know if I can help you with that, Brighton might be a bit far from you HC.

My 2p worth. E30 or E36, plenty of dead E36's in breakers yards to rob parts from, and if you got one with leather, flog it to fund goodies. Mk2 MR2, rot will be eating the cheaper ones though. Alfa 155, great handling for a fwd, quick rack as std on the widebody model, good gear ratios and revvy lump - just don't neglect it however. Only 10bhp of a difference between the 1.8 & 2.0. 2.5 V6 upsets the handling a touch.

Buy yourself a track car that already has a cage, seats, harnesses, brakes, suspension etc fitted as it will save you a small fortune
205's can be had for a grand already prepared and a trailer is essential if you want to get home if it breaks down or you crash it on track
You could use a Maestro like me if your mad enough

I bought a pre prepped car and I have to say it does make sense although mine doesn't have a cage or buckets in it.
Trailering a track car is handy but having to drive it there and more importantly back makes you a little more sensible in your driving on the circuit which is no bad thing. On friday at Combe there was total knobbers in an E36 325i who turned up with it on a trailer, spent the day bouncing it off tyre walls, doing burnouts in the pits and generally annoying everyone else who was there. I'm pretty sure if they'd have had to have driven it home they wouldn't have acted like quite such idiots. Not that I'm saying you're a knobber, the above is an extreme case.
