I know what you mean about the drive home bit. And being a bit more sensible. I've always avoided doing track days alothough I spectated plenty. I always feared breaking the one and only car and daily work transport.
A second car that required me to lie to a breakdown driver wouldn't be such a hardship. I'm not actually a gung ho mega blaster anyway, I love smooth fast rather than twohat arround and break things fast. Things cost too much to risk too much into breaking it, even cheap things. I know accidents can and do happen at the track but normally they can be minimised by being careful and following the rules.

E30!! I can't recommend them highly enough. I'm a complete track day novice but I've pushed my 318is very hard three times at RAF Marham and it begs for more. I've had it two years and the only break downs I've had are two split waterpipes. Best of all I haven't paid much for the pleasure. The 318is is currently off the road but only because it costs too much to commute in!

Porsche 924? Decent ish power, they don't rust, 50/50 weight distribution and you can sell of a decent interior for more than you paid for the car if you're lucky. Some have LSD as standard. Engines really easy to work on, and many parts are VW/AUDI.

My favourite 3 retro trackcars have been:
- mk1 MR2. Can drive it completely standard and keep up with more modern stuff. Not much fun on high speed circuits, though.
- E30 BMW 320i. Stripped out it went really well and was good drifting fun too.
- Pug 309GTi. Just put a decent set of brake pads on and anway you go. Better than a 205 as you can get the spare tyres, jack, etc in the boot as well.

I'm really falling in love with the idea of a volvo 360. On more rescued from the drifters, usually well looked after. And potential to stick a 740 turbo engine in with loom etc.

If you knew my Saab history you would know I don't need converting and also why my login is what it is. Wasn't overlyy impressed by my old 9k Aero, and that was running low gears so accelerated like a chimp on speed.

I love that Astra! Have a look at my BMW E34 525i, I was given it for spares as it had a very tatty interior and lots of electrical gremlins. £10 for a pair of bucket seats and two 6 packs of John Smiths Extra Smooth for some perspex windows later. I've got a light weight (relatively) 187BHP rear wheel drive 18yr old Racing Beemer for just over £20! And how I'm hoping it will eventualy look: Click here to see lots more: www.escortupgrades.co.uk/BMW/Project%20Bratwurst.htmSmiler.
