So as you know I own a Mk1 Escort drag racer,which I'm v e r y slowly collecting bits for,including the engine, a 2L Pinto.
Anyway I was having a discussion with a mate of mine(long time mechanic who also drag races a Mk1 with a 2L) about flywheels. Now every piece of text about flywheels in performance engines I have ever read has stated categorically that a lightened flywheel will improve acceleration of the engine, due to less weight to accelerate etc. However my mate insists that a lightened flywheel is no good in a drag engine,as the engine will bog down when the clutch is dumped during a holeshot.
What do you lads think? I did once read something about heavy flywheels not being a bad idea on race bikes because they help cornering but that has nothing to do with this.
Any info much appreciated.

Ive been told the same by several people. That you often find that a heavier flywheel = a faster car when it comes to drag racing.

Stick a programmable C4 A/T behind that Pinto, and the flywheel will become an irrelevancy. Bing-bing-bing! 1-2-3, even air-shifted, exactly on schedule, and as per max TQ, every time, like clockwork. The essence of a successful bracket racing drag car = consistency. Worth a sit-down to consider, if this is to be a dedicated dragger...... Norm London-Mongolia-London www.charityrallies.org/en/50north

Money? You pay the shipping, mate, and I'll GIVE you a free C4 for your dragracing Escort. Would enjoy helping a 2.0L racer. Every A/T company in the universe has the reverse valve bodies, shift kits, race clutches, and shifters for C4's. Stone simple. No more cost than regularly blowing up T9's or Rocket Boxes. And a helluva lot more competitive, if you like winning money and trophies, while the "real racers" go home penniless. ;D

No,they get underneath the car to pull the box out for the 100th time after it's broken.. ;D One word..AUTO. And a heavy flywheel is stored energy. You need it to launch the car,Lightened flywheels fall on their in drag racing.

Since Andy's been in I have to say "nothing to add" LOL.
Not sure if auto is the way to go behind a Pinto because the Pinto doesn't make that much torque. A C4 would probably sap a lot of power from that little engine and I don't know what upgrades are available for the C3?
I don't think theres enough torque to carry a Powerglide either?
Lenco? LOL.

It's got a lighter set of clutches than the V8 version, and they don't weigh more than many manual trans. "Since Andy's been in"? ;D What am I? Chopped liver? ;D Jeesh, tough room..... EDIT: A drag race Pinto can be built to produce prodigious torque BTW. 8v Pintos are especially grunty, most power is all done and over by 6500RPM. They're stump pullers when built for such use.

I didn't know Ford used the C4 behind Pintos. I've seen the C3 there I'm sure, same as with the V6s. Always had you pegged as more of a roundy-roundy guy

Always had you pegged as more of a roundy-roundy guy 2.0L Pintos and Colognes both got the C4 here. Later, the Colognes got the Frenchie C3s, but by then the Pinto was gone from our market. All auto Pintos here used either the BW35 or the C4. More a roadrace (and of late, a forest rally) guy, although weaned at the dragstrip and still dabble now and again. Hey, man, I just like driving. In two weeks, we're going halfway around the world+ in mileage. Hope you can swing by The Ace on July 10 and share an awkward uncomfortably silent moment with me. ;D ;D

I think we got the BW20 as well as the BW35 and then the C3. I might be able to make it to the Ace, depends on time and cash. You'll be the guy in the plaid pants and hawaiian shirt, right?

No chance of an auto mate. I don't wanna win any trophies or money,I just wanna have some fun on a Sunday. That's all. Besides,I like the "involvedness" of driving you get with a manual. By the way the Escort is currently not going anywhere fast, as it's engine is on a pallet beside it.
Bet it costs hell to ship a great big transmission half way round the world though!darn ;D
