C4 is no bigger or heavier than a Pinto Hummer 4-spd box.
My mistake, Mister Pottah. I thought this was to be a dedicated dragrace vehicle.
All future BMW M-machines (per press release) are getting autoboxes, F1 paddles are really autoboxes of a sort, CVTs for "green" cars are autoboxes, Hurst His-Her shifters on 442's and GTO's were autoboxes (with optional shifted by hand mode), as was the "Slap stick" on 440 'Cudas and AAR Challengers as well as the be-winged Superbirds and Daytonas, Jim Hall won the Can-Am with 2-speed Powerglides driven by stars like David Hobbs, Derek Bell, Mike Hailwood, Brian Redman, etc with his Chaparrals.
I'm sure they all feel quite "involved". And properly sporty. ;D

maybe have some words with these guys if you hadn't heard of them- www.esslingeracing.com/home.htm. behind some of the fastest pinto's in the US. I'd have loved a C4 auto in my capri, the lairy essex would have loved a full manual valve body. no-one I found at the time did anything for the c3 box it had

And I'd have given you one free of charge too, B&D. ;D My only fee would be to roller brush all the panels of your car one color. And I would use a short nap roller for minimum "texture", to be kind. Esslinger? Again.... I ask..... what am I? Chopped liver? ;D (TB have done a "modicum" with the OHC... my website is not as deluxe I suppose.) But in all seriousness, there are so many foremost exspurts in the UK on the Pinto, he'd be all set right on your island with local help. I'd just confuse 'I'm, I think.

more like pork loin to me I was just offering another port of call. the answer to all questions is the one most people give (usually), so therefore the more people you ask, the more chance of finding out what you're looking for. nobody's doubting you, Norm. maybe just skimming over the top a bit much. yeah, the UK is full of pinto guys like the harris clan etc, but so is malta I'd bet. they have a huge drag scene I'm told with some really silly power engines burning up the strip typical, I get offered a free gearbox 3 years too late. just my luck

So's go ahead and join in the DoubtFest. As soon as you think you know-it-all, you're a dead duck. IMO. Best to be stupid, and that's my speciality. Go get a Capri for the free box. That way, I get to monochrome your multi-hued '02 (that eats at me in my sleep....)

Cheers for the info B&D Norm,(if ya don't mind first name terms mate, but it feels funny to be havin a discussion with someone called Team Blitz ;D) not in any way denying that autoboxes are probably the best thing for racing,it's just I prefer 3 pedals. And the Escort is a dedicated drag racer, cos it's got no reg documents and has been extensively lightened and roll caged and there is no way it's ever venturing on the road. However I'm not looking to compete seriously in the sport. Just a bitta fun.
And B&D,you're right mate. There's some awesome metal being fired up the dragstrip here. Amongst which the European record holding drag truck with a low 10s pass at santa pod,a spaceframed MK1 Escort with a YB Cossie which does 7.8s and an all steel all glass Mk1 Escort with a 2.1l Pinto which has made an 11.1 pass. As well as a couple of Mk1 Escorts ( they're big on Mk1s here, can you tell) doing low 10s passes on 2.1 Pintos with no nitrous, turbo or supercharger.

Norm will do, HP. Offer stands if you change you mind, long as I still have one in inventory. I really wish to know more about normally aspirated 2.1L Pintos cutting 10's in the quarter. These are 8V or 16V headed? Insane. I must know a lot more. If you please.... any technical write-ups or brag sites on the engine builds? Norm www.charityrallies.org/en/50north

Interesting thread, this! I'm set to go auto again but have a deep-rooted fear of them thanks to GM thinking plastic parts were a good idea.

There's a couple of guys off OldSkoolFord who've either had or are having Maltese Pintos and crossflows built for their British Escorts because they're so good. Some of them took their Escorts over to Halfar last year and won their classes with loads of help from the Maltese racers and are doing it again on August 22/23rd this year. It looked an exhausting but brilliant adventure and hopefully the Maltese will come over to Santa Pod or Shakey some time to race which should be quite a spectacle.

Norm as far as I know these where made on 8v heads. HOWEVER this is just what I've heard from a couple sources.Reliable so far. The 7.8s Cossie YB,I witnessed that run personally.
The Maltese aren't big on t'interweb so I doubt you'll find any engine build up sites. However lots of the drag Pintos are built by a man nicknamed Il Mantij (Il is the in maltese and the nickname is pronounced Munteee). I've been told he's Australian-born and he's reputed to be a rich man,yet his appearance would lead you to believe otherwise.
Anglia, some of the Maltese bike riders ( Simon Giordimaina for sure) have raced at Shakey and the Maksar drag truck set a European record at Santa pod I think.
However I'll say it again, most of the ETs are just what I heard, and you know what a drag racing grapevine is like. Having said that, everyone over on the OSF forum seems to be full of praise for the Maltese boys,so.
Hoping to be there in August to see for myself. Will report back my findings.
