I am thinking that me being me I am going to want to put a V8 in this van at some point (maybe this winter)
Anyone know of a good source in the UK, I am thinking small block ford, Preferably long block/complete and with an autobox.
Either that or talk me into using a Rover.
The current engine is great, 2.0l inline 4, very low miles (12k) and runs sweet but it does lack power somewhat and is geared very low, anything over 50 mph and it really gulps the fuel.
It would be nice to be able to much miles at 70-80mph all day long without revving the nuts off it and I cant help thinking that touring in the van would be ten times better with a V8 soundtrack.

Pro-Rover: my old Victor had a 3.9, carb, headers, cam and mild bit of porting and ran 14.1 on weeny wheels and 3:54. Would pootle 10-15mph in 5th and roll on from there. 20mpg at mix of dire London traffic-crawl and 90 cruise.
Dirt cheap to buy (mate bought an OK 3.5 and box for £70). Cheap to tune to a basic level, but costly to try and extract major power. 320lbs vs SBF 460. And the trans will be lighter too. Read of a car on the NSRA that went slower when the Rover was removed in favour of an SBF.

those OHC V8s are massive though LOL. The cam carriers make them very wide. I know a lad trying to get one into a Capri.
You can get V8 engines off eBay, this forum, NSRA, variouos yank forums sometimes have breakers, Real Steel, local banger racers, specialist yank breakers like Oldcott Motors in Staffs, Eurodragster, Rod&classicMart, etc.
A lot of people diss the old Rover V8 but its a good little engine and does the job nice. Ignore the "internet experts" who tell you they are bigger than a big block chevy and weigh 3 tons etc.

i'll go along with all of that - its a monster great big thing i had a rv8 in my mk1 capri for years, then thought it'd be better with an american v8 so fitted a 4v 351 cleveland and 4 sp top loader worst thing i ever did, it didnt handle, it would wheel spin in 4th in the dry and in the wet it was just stupidly dodgy - lost interest and broke it up for spares soon after cant go far wrong with a rover

Mercedes M117 5.0 or 5.6 - the 5.0 has 260ish bhp, the 5.6 has 300... I'm selling a 5.0 if you can find my ad on the 'parts for sale' board

german and J V8's are very nice, and not to heavy usually, but they are mostly OHC and very wiiiiiiiide, parts can be dearer than for older yanky lumps as well, thats why i chose a yank lump and not a Merc one for my Merc.

I like the idea of carbs and pushrods, nice and simple.
If they weren't so hard to find low on power I'd like a flathead. (not that I've looked very far)

I keep hearing how "easy" it is to get a Lexus V8 in your ride and how "easy" they make big power. Well, I have a Lexus V8 in my Lexus and its a mighty fine engine to be sure. However I wouldn't want to try transplant it into anything else. Big, frighteningly complex and such.
What is this "plug and play" conversion you speak of? My Lexus needs to have its ECU "recalibrated" when you change the tyres! These things are scary computer-intensive.

unless you have a large yank or such then rule out the bmw v8. it is "easy" as its got its own self contained engine loom, but they are fantastically wide. you'd never fit a 3.0 due to the lack of power; the 4.0 auto gearbox actually dwarfs the engine! so you'd need a humoungous trans tunnel. they are 90' vee with 4 valve heads, to fit one into an e30 you drop the crossmember so the alternator fits under the chassis leg cos its too wide for the bay. lexus is narrower, problem is all the associated junk they have, they aren't a clean looking enigine either. I know as I have one at work thats up for grabs
