IMHO a well maintained older car will likely cause less pollution than a poorly maintained modern. Depends what you mean. That is only the case because you are assuming that the older car cost nothing to build (to the environment) because it is already built. But it did also cost something to the environment too. Also you have to take into account replacement parts cost to the environment. As in the manufacturing process of them.

No, I'm talking about the car itself. I've never suggested older cars have no cost to the environment Your losing it mate, quick get out and buy an Imp to regain your sanity!!! ;D

David, think of discussions about gov't anti-car and anti-mobility regulations in the same light as "The Talk" you get about prostate disease at the doctor's office. No, it isn't the most pleasant topic. But if you want to continue pursuing life, it is something to keep a watchful eye on! We would all rather be looking at Bronze Beauties than looking at wall charts down at the clinic. Agreed! Which is why I go to the doctors for medical detail on the anatomy and to strip clubs for bronzed beauties. Retro Rides is to car politics, what strip clubs are to womens lib. We like our thrills fun, fast and loose, the politics behind it all we leave to those places better suited for their discussion where something might actually get done. Some members might part take in those politics, but I'd like to keep that out of the strip club and in the... well the anaolgy breaks down there... but you get my drift. The problem bazzateer is as you say IMHO,.. people won't listen to your humble opinion, they want empirical data. I'm sure AlistairK has a whole bunch of info on this stuff.

It's also worth mentioning that the 'offer' that they are considering is just that...an offer. I won't be selling/trading the Cressida in voluntarily and I certainly wouldn't be burying my head in the sand if they were forcing it's sale.
Realistically this isn't vastly different to Game offering trade-ins on old computer games. The consumer is retaining the power of choice - don't wan't to trade inyour car for a new one? Then don't.

There's a good article and comments hereGoogling "car lifetime energy" seems to return estimates that manufacturing accounts for anything from 10% to 50% of a car's lifetime energy use Broadly, most sources agree that if you're doing a low milage, it's better to keep your car for longer, for a high milage, get a newer more fuel efficient one... Now, a slight hijack... I live in the middle of London, and cycle to work through some nice areas, and also driving around, I've seen very few 09 plate cars, or even company vans etc, and we're most of the way through March. Anyone else noticed the same? As I recall, by this long after a new reg, you can usually see a fair few brand new, ie 09 cars, but it doesn't seem like that to me this time?

actually, Thanks to your post I've only just realized that there IS a new reg to see. So that makes no 09 platers spotted by me (which as you say is odd. Normaly I'd have seen plenty and got bored by 20 days of new issues)
The main thread? I have no comment. You all know my views on how long a vehicle could (and should) be made to last ;D

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

I've got nothing against helping the car trade really. I don't want people to loose their jobs especially in the factories. I started a post on this last week and I've been thinking about it a bit.
As far as I see it they should only offer the money if
1: The car is running over a specified emissions level at mot test time or has a manufacturer c02 rating of +240 g/km 2: The car you replace it with has to do more than 40mpg in a combined cycle and have emmisions of less than 180 g/km.
This will simply take older proven dirty cars off the roads and replace them with more economical and cleaner cars. This way you at least have some kind of positive effect rather than just disposing of old but still clean usable cars in exchange for a possibly dirtier new car for the car dealers benefit.

This scrappage scheme has curse word all to do with the enviroment, its solely to get the car manufacturing industry going again. The enviromental arguments are used to butter up the general public.

Those cars that survive will be worth more.
Those employed in car making will stay employed.
If I had enough money for a new car I'd kill the wifes for £2k off a VXR astra provided I can get it via GM partners deal.

Normaly I'd have seen plenty and got bored by 20 days of new issues) Theres plenty of 09 reg busses running round Newcastle. Seems my suggestion that we help save the world by running a fleet of slammed retro busses has been ignored. Again.
