on the chevetes.com forum they are 99% all against modification of chevettes (especially for rallying) and like to keep them factory, hence I'm not there very often. A recent hot topic that arose was a guy (Milko) posted a pic of his euro style polo with streched rubber (hes currently euroing a Kadet saloon too )which looks ace, however everyone kicked off........ was wondering your opinions on the issues raised, first 2 pages are most relevent. www.chevettes.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9060&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

i like the polo (its not a full on bad boy bonnet, its more a little bit naughty boy) but what do you think to the tyre debate, is their an issue with streched rubber, or are they all just proving to be their normal, boring, anti - mod, anti anything differrent selfs?
ps they nearly curse word when they saw pics of my blue shuv!

the bonnet is borderline, but ok as the rest of the car doesn't push it over the edge.
the tyres RULE, purely for the fact they shouldn't work but do.

Yes, there are major practicality issues over stretched tyres. Yes there may be some safety concers over MEGA-stretched tyres (hence why most tyre fitter won't do it). But it still looks FO' SCHIZZLE. And if looking hot is more important than issues of practicality, then so be it!

Actually I tend to agree with the feeling of the opponents myself. His experience with 6 years on that type of setup is hardly empirical. I don't mind the look of a mild stretch any more but I'll not be doing it myself. Couldn't do this then

Sounds to me like they're a bunch of high and mighty gits who once they realised it was them onto one guy in a conversation thought that because there was more of them, their opinion was correct. Can't say I'd join that forum if I ever bought a Chevette or Kadett/Gemini.
I found the idiot whose sig file said something along the lines of getting sideways at a roundabout, who then spoke about I hope you don't kill someone blah blah when those tyres yakedy schmackedy, to be a forkin' spoon. Hypocritical retard.

Milko sounds like our sort of bloke.
Anyone who has ever modified a car that's different or in a different way comes across loads of know-it-alls who think they know better or are scared of the implications of agreeing with you (if I ran a tyre shop I would think twice about putting a 175/50 over a 9" rim!). When you come across people like that you need to find out everything you can to support what you want to do and be prepared to take the critisism, but also be open to those who do know...in that thread there was only one person who seemed to have a valid point - the guy who knew of a tyre-stretch related crash, I'd be interested to hear more about that. Many of the people on there were denying the stretched look even exists...we know better than that - and we also know now that they are not people whose opinion we need to take too seriously.
I'd like to think that over here on RR we're open-minded and interested in pushing boundaries...but that we're also capable of wieghing up the advantages and disadvantages of a situation.
For example: My car is effectively too low, I drive it accordingly and not very often. Advantage: it looks great. Disadvantage: it's no daily driver. There are ways of getting it that low and using it more often but I can't afford it just yet.
When you're looking at pics on the web, remember that some of these cars are just show cars and/or some of them might have dodgy MOTs (or TUVs) or use a different set-up for passing tests.
Don't get put off by Mr.Normal and his cronies...but do be aware of the physics and the risks. ..learn all you can and make your decision based on your knowledge and ideally someone you can trust (not just someone who agrees with you!).

That Doive bloke knows all about how-not-to-modify. www.chevettes.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9105"1) A spring will have been designed with a particular application in mind and certain loading forces over its whole length. When you cut it the whole force is now acting over a much shorter length, so reducing the 'springiness' of the spring. Its unlikely to snap or fail, just may change the handling. " Er, that's how it works! "2) If you cut a few mil too much from any one side, the car may sag or lean over." No, really. Genius.

Looks like the one of the Mini forums when they kick off ! I`m almost tempted to sign up so I can correct the glassfibre man - "Fibreglass" is a trade name for the chopped strand mat used to make glassfibre or GRP (glassfibre reinforced plastic). That`s from 20 years in the trade myself - my father has over 40 years I`m now retired from GRP though, you can only stay high on styrene fumes for so long ;D

That is just the sort of forum which makes me avoid forums like the plague (except this one and barryboys of course). It’s a bunch of blokes cock-waving and spouting half-truths about stuff they have zero theoretical and very limited practical experience of.
“I’ve been a tyre fitter for 2 years so I know what I’m taking about”….”2 years? Hah, you’re a child, I did it for 6!!!”….. “You’re all wrong, and my dads a policeman so I should know….” Etc etc etc, ad infinitum. Worse than fugging kids. It makes me want to sign up just so I can dish out a load of abuse then get thrown off.
That Milko lad seems to give a good account of himself by cheerfully ignoring everyone’s ‘wisdom’ however. Nice motors too!

This highlights issues that most clubs have to contend with - modification Vs standard. Room for both I feel, but once you own a car you do what the hell you like to it. I think we should ask Milko to come here to his 'spritual home'.....and leave the kids to bicker about the types of toothbrushes best used to clean their wheels.

Well, I think his cars look cool, and the wheels on the Polo look awesome. I'd think that they might be a bit 'illegal', but that would depend on the police man and how good you are at talking! I agree with Rmad (think it was him) - if he chooses to drive the car with wheels like that, then he'll have to drive accordingly, which is the price he's willing to pay. My MK1 is too low and quite impractical, but I live with it by not using it all the time and driving slowly. The people on that forum, in the main, sound like a bunch of nerds and thank god there are forums like this one where people are open minded about all tastes of modifying. Get him on here!
