I know this is a real basic job but we all have to start somewhere!! Ive not done any mechanics before and have aways wanted to but never known how to do anything, but if I don't try and do anything I will never learn so... I'm going to start by giving the bmw a little service, Oil, oil filter, air filter and plugs, Ive got a tray to catch the oil but do I drive the car up on to ramps or jack it up or just reach under and undo the sump plug??

As long as you can get to the sump plug and get something under it to catch the oil, it doesn't matter how you do it. If you jack it up, get axle stands under it before getting on with anything.
Also make sure to fill up the new oil filter before refitting it to the car.

If you can drain the oil without jacking the car up it means the suspension isn't low enough You might find an old washing up bowl or similar good for catching the oil. Also check to see if there is a sealing washer on the plug that you ought to replace when you put it back on. I'm sure someone here will be able to tell you so you can get one in advance. I normally get the oil draining then get on with the filter change while the old oil is still coming out. Don't forget to fit the sump plug before filling up with oil though

Don't underestimate the size of the tray you'll need either!
Have a good look at how to get the oil filter off to begin with - some can be a bit fiddly.
I like using a pair of ramps as you get great access and most sump plugs are at the back of the sump so you get good drainage because of the slope. I've gone too low to get on the ramps now though without messing with bits of wood, etc.

Another stupid question, If I jack the car up and put it on axle stands is all the oil going to come out?

if its the little 318i you've got, then its an eco type filter under an alloy cover with a 13mm headed bolt holding it down. be sure to replace the little sealing washer at the top of the bolt, the small O ring at the bottom and the large O ring under the cover to stop any leaks. also dribbling a little oil down the centre of the tube inside the oil filter housing helps the engine get oil pressure up quick with the new oil.

...and the oil change will be easier with the egine warm (the old oil will run out more quickly). but watch out when removing the sump plug with hot oil. it tends to stick to your hands, and that's not funny when it's really hot

And don't tip the old oil down the drain. Most local tips have oil disposal points. I like to use an old 5l oil can which I cut the side out of - allows me to pour the oil into another container to take away. I'll have to go back to that method as the old bowl I was using has split. Darn.
