Depends what pait you've used. 2k or waterbased, yes you need a clearcoat. If you've used 1k acrylic or cellulose, then a clearcoat isn't needed, but a coat of good wax will help stop the rot. And Imps do rot - get some waxoyl in the box sections, and underseal on the bottom if you want to use it through the winter.

yeeeehaaaa! Came yesterday just got to wait 4+ months now before I use it!! I cant belielve how heavy the manifold is it must be 10-15 kg! think Ill get some Stainless ones made up pronto! also checked the paint on the imp its cellulose (spelling) so chuffed that It doesnt need a clear coat makes it nice and simple to touch up and cut back now! think I do any painting like that when I need to. So back to the mx5! over the winter the main things I need to do are..... 1. Clutch kit 2. Cambelt kit 3. Rear brakes (pads/disks) 4. 1.8 diff (LSD) + shaft 5. Oil/filter/coolent ect 6. Fit the old wheels on painted 7. New hood 8. front strut brace 9. TURBO!! 10. Bipes 11. BOV 12. Intercooler 13. 2.5" exhaust cat back 14. Go Drifting at Oulton park lol got lots to do + the purple imp so best get a move on to be fair ;D as well as keeping the green imp going through the winter. chris

Iv always had a soft spot for 3 spoke alloy wheels (sorry again ;D) and came across this 5 on the bay, I need 3 spokes now!! just cant find any cheap or expensive (cheap wanted obviously : what do you guys think? I personally love the look of them cheers

yep your right, I could have brought it with the cuts in for an extra £50 but thats not in the spirit of things lol so Iv cut the manifold between each port and put a slice in every bolt hole using a band saw. SORTED!

Well I’m going to attempt to fit these to the 5 ;D They're 13" so Iv figured out the best tire size I can find is 185/70/13 for them this will result in slightly more ride height but that’s not a bad thing to be fair! Also will result in my Speedo reading being out by 2% so when at 60mph Ill actually be doing 61 point something. Now the centre bore is bigger than needed on the 5 so cleared but by not that much so that’s ok and Iv found a shop that sell wobble nuts and bolts but thats the problem after finding those I noticed/remembered that I wont be able to use them as the slots are flat faced. The slots are 4" pcd and if I can remember correctly when I had a set on the imp the backface was completely flat so do you think it’ll be ok to drill four new holes on 100mm pcd in between the original holes if these are the same? Or create a tapered hole from the original ones and then use wobble bolts/nut? (cant remember off hand what the 5 is) Either way they’re going to be used on this or another std imp when I get one so they're not going to get wasted and I’m always looking for more lol. If the mx5 is bolt not stud I could make four new holes the correct diameter for a bolt to go through to hold it securely, correct? Chris

the mx5 needs a small patch welding on the chassis, the imp wasn't worth as much as this and had already had to have the chassis to sills welding up with a strip both sides, and had been messed with alot! hence the don't care about the salt ect ect, plus it was re painted under it so don't see why you find it weird plus cant keep them covered up all the time with the curse word weather in this country all year round they'd never be used! thats just a waste might as well use them and fix em!

Looks a nice motor. There's a good write up on installing the greddy kit here. www.mx5nutz.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=6457Be aware that the tubby bolts and nuts in the original kit are curse word. Your supplier may have upgraded them already. The manifolds do have a habbit of cracking despite relief cuts being made. I advise to put a proper oil drain in by drilling the sump. The sugested greddy way doesnt allow good oil drainage from the tubby. A set of 1.8/supra injectors, emanage/megasquirt and IC will be next on your shopping list. If you follow the instruction a back the timing off the engine will be as flat as a fart off boost so get a decent solution to control injectors and timing. BTW has your crank pulley got 4 or 8 slots? The earlier 4 slot design aka short nose had a tendency to wobble if not reassembled correctly and damage the crank . Loads of info here. www.miata.net

hi BB thanks for the info! Ill have to check out the crank pully never looked to be honest! Iv hopefully got Bipes on the way from USA but its looking a bit lost in the post at the moment fingers crossed it turns up! I know what you mean about the nuts and bolts man they look like toy ones! will have to pick out a couple of new ones. Cant wait to get started now made a little list to see what needs doing by the start of April. don't think Ill use the wolfraces on this now so need an other std imp for them haha. 1. Change oil/filter 2. Change coolant 3. Change gearbox oil 4. Change clutch (old one dead) 5. Change Cam belt (no proof of it ever been done! 130000 miles on the clock ) 6. Change spark leads to 8.5 7. Change oil filter 8. Change fuel filter 9. Change spark plugs to turbo spec ones 10. Change rear brake disks 11. Change rear brake pads 12. Change camshaft oil seals 13. Change crankshaft oil seal 14. Fit turbo set up 15. Fit Bipes unit 16. Fit new soft top 17. Weld up chassis leg 18. Paint chassis 19. Cut manifold slots DONE 20. Kill rust on sides and repaint 21. Get central locking working properly 22. Remove seats and carpet to check condition of floor 23. Fit new exhaust system just brought from MX5NUTZ 24. Replace curse word turbo bolts with better ones 25. Find a fitting for the oil drain and fit. chris

Hey all well I started my little project finally yesterday!!! Before I play with the turbo bits I need to sort the clutch and do the cam belt so was going to take it to a mates garage and do the clutch on his lift, but in work last week I mentioned that I would have done it all at home if I had a engine lift as Id do all the work out of car more room ect. Not thinking about what I was saying and to who Iv ended up being able to lend a lift lol, not a bad thing but its one thing saying you'd do something then atually be bothered to do it!! Couldnt say no then though Sooo spent an hour yesterday, by dropping all the fluids, removing coolant pipes, electronic connections, rad/fan, air pipes ect ect. was happy to see long nose crank! is this normal? to have a bolt in the middle hole? would have thought to see all studs to be honest? today spent another hour before setting off to college to just come back as its half term lol finished removing the wires, fuel pipes, vacuum pipes and then inside to remove the necessary parts there. poo, will be needing a new gator then! After reading Rod's I was expecting to see lots of oil coming out of the stick as I lifted it?? nothing lol Well that's it so far, tomorrow hope to get it up in the air and start disconnecting things underneath! Cheers Chris

Wicked. Seem to have missed this along the way. I reckon those teeny 13" wheels with a lower profile like 185/60 or 195/55 would drop this sumbitch on it's belly. Dunno about slotmags on that, better suited to a jacked up Cortina, but deffo 13" like those black spokers back in this thread.

Hi man, well iv basically ran out of money at the moment so the wheels are going to have to stay as they are or maybe back to the original ones havent really decided yet. Think I'm going to try my original idea of painting up the std wheels in black and red nice and cheap!
