Retro Cars landed on my doormat this morning aswell. The only mags I get now are Retro Cars and Practical Performance Car. Cant be bothered with the rest now.
That shortened SD1 in the classified does look interesting.

I saw the latest PPC in Smiths, but there was a Citroen Saxo on the front cover.......     Other than that, it looked ok though! I stopped buying PPC when they did this:  ...and repeated the same set of questions to the staff in the staff car section. After re-reading the first two issues again recently I fear i may have mis-judged them and I think I'll give it another go. |

I saw the latest PPC in Smiths, but there was a Citroen Saxo on the front cover....... Nothing wrong with that...Okay they're a bit modern and have a bit of a chav-ish image to them but 231bph, 185 lb/ft of torque, weighs less than a ton and 150mph are good numbers in anyone's book. And they're getting on a bit now so a 9 year old car is relatively cheap. The magazine is Practical Performance Cars after all...Not Old and expensive but bloody fast monthly. Much like the Nova, the Saxo is a criminally underrated car that has been tarred by association with the boy racers out there. *n |

I hate the chav is a horrible word, please stop using it -HTW is a horrible word, please stop using it -HTW Saxo and Nova but I have to admit that the car featured did make some sense. And a mate of mine bought a cheap Nova for a bit of track day use and was rather impressed by it. It's just a pity that the inbreds ruin them by sticking on questionable fashion accessories.
How many people are now building flow benches? I was half way through reworking my 2.0ltr Zetec cylinder head so my flow bench is presently half way through production.
PPC is deffinately a top mag. Retro is good too but does have flaws and a number of the articles in it over the year do seem to have that 'written by a reporter' feel about them as opposed to the much more nitty grity hands on mechanics approach of the PPC articles. (how many times have you read in Retro mag about refernces to modified cams fitted to a Rover V8?)

Much like the Nova, the Saxo is a criminally underrated car that has been tarred by association with the boy racers out there. *n Ah, but PPC had it's origins in RPM, which is why I consider a Saxo to be highly inappropriate; even though the one in question isn't a Lax Power special, IMHO, it's still far too modern. However, at the end of the day, it's up to the editors of the magazine what they do or don't include, but I for one have no interest in reading about Citroen Saxos in that sort of magazine. To put this in perspective, I consider my Amazon to be my modern car, and have no desire to own anything younger. Also, there are loads of old but bloody fast cars that aren't expensive - e.g. about 10 years ago, an aquaintance of my father bought a good condition V12 Ferrari for 7.5K (ok, it was a 400i... ) |

I used to buy PPC because I really liked the technical articles that it contained. However I realised I should save my money and just buy some good books instead. I could have 6 issues of how to build a turbo system articles, but I might as well have bought a good turbo building book instead. I don't tend to like the cars they feature, or at least the articles don't get me excited about them... None of the magazines are 100% now days. Which makes me want to start my own  |

Nova + 20XE / 20LET = Scooby Killer.
One thing that has irritated me recently is that it seems that, every month since before xmas, either RC or PPC has ran something about Saabs. Whether it's a 'how to buy and tune a Saab blahdeblah for fast road use' or a 'OMG! We took teh speedySaabs to an Airfield!!!11lollerpants' without getting into any actual detail about the speedySaabs in question, just giving a small window with specs on.

I subscribe to Custom Car and Minor Monthly. I also buy Retro Cars, Practical Classics and I've just got into PPC.
OK the Saxo's notr my cup of tea, but it makes a change to see one that's actually tuned, rather than the usual "bodykit, bling-bling rims and big stereo" curse word.
Nova's are perhaps getting near the borderline-retro, especially since the chavs have switched over to Corsa's.
I reckon at some point in the future there'll be a distinct boundary between retro and non-retro. Maybe the natural cut off point is pre-catalytic-converters?

Where possible I try to get PPC but I can rarely find anywhere that sells it, either in my provincial backwater or in central London Always get "Retro". (though has yet to arrive in the shops this month....grrr) Used to get practical classics. Stopped when it became curse word |

I was thinking that too...it seems that HotWire has put the word C H A V into the forum's swear filter and replaced it with the sentence that keeps appearing. I'm writing just the four letters C H A V below, without the spaces. chav What does it say? |

this issue of retro cars, has now got me wanting to buy a pug 205 1.1 and bung a tuned 1.4 engine in.. stupid engine tech features  i have that RPM issue of practical classics.. i didnt really get what was going on  |
