I have noticed that the type of cars that we like/own/drive are becoming increasingly seen as 'cool' in the eyes of the young & trendy and the public as a whole. This I think is reflected in the number of 'Retro' cars being used in adverts - only last night whilst watching the box I spotted a Marina Coupe in a Carling advert - where the two housemates race home from their office to watch the footy on the telly, and a Citroen CX (I think - maybe the smaller one?) On an advert for KSwiss shoes. Not to mention the VW splitties in the Phones 4U and BodyForm adverts. Thing is - Is this extra awareness for old cars good or bad for us true enthusiasts? Also can you think of any other adverts using Retro cars? 'Full Flavour Behaviour';D

I think that a lot of it is to do with the appeal of all things 'retro' to those in the media itself. You find that a lot of the enthusiasts, unless involved in the car industry directly, are designers or similar (including members of this board) who will often incorporate their own tastes and influences into their own work.

What about the "evolution" ads for the new golf, you know the one where you see the guys whole career in 30 seconds from MK1 to Mk5. That was quite cool and cleverly done...

I think as well as retro cars in ads adding stylish appeal to the scenes, there's also a more practical side - KFC for instance, wouldn't want to use cars like the Mercedes A Class, Audi A4 etc etc because a) why should "the colonel" shell out for free advertising for other companies?, and b) the car companies may not like the way that their cars are presented / associated with other brands and products. But, I reckon retro motors definitely create a more stylish atmosphere in ads. The only one that hacks me off is the Peugeot 306 ad.... why the feck would anyone be ashamed to drive a classic Peugeot?

Especially the one with the kid / bank robbery scenario. Why would you want to eschew a clearly mint 504 estate (well known for their space, style, reliability, generally indestructable) for a crappy 206 XS. Especially if you're clearly a family guy who could use the space. It makes NO SENSE!

Levi jeans had an ad with a MK 1 Triumph 2000 a couple of years ago and Cornetto ice cream had an ad with a mint Fiat 600 last year

Also many modern cars due to crash protection legislation and windtunnel testing tend to look similar. Retro cars stand out more, ...... i think

although not truely retrocars in ads, I would love to have any of the 'toy' cars in that advert that I think is for Peugeot, I think they look so cool, especially putting your car away in a cardboard garage

the 2 ads i hate are- the loan one where the guy pulls up in his bay camper and his girlfriend says "I'm not getting in that".so he buys a cack golf convertible.is that car really worth getting into debt for?.thats been said to me before, told the girl in question "well f*cking walk then" the second is for an energy drink where a fly or something has a drink then smashes the front and back screens on a sweet p6. b*stards ;D

The "I'm not getting in that! " ad has been the subject of many a rant by me on this forum, for two reasons. Firstly, it's an example of the opposite side to using an old car in an advert, using to convince people that having an old car is a source of shame and that anyone with a respectable, tidy old motor needs to automatically go out and buy a new one because their car being no longer "fashionable" to own makes it somehow less of a good car than it was when it was the current model. The second reason is very closely linked, it's part of this scheme of putting loads of people into massive debt who don't really need to be in debt, which various loan companys, credit card co.s, you name it, are into at the moment, ie convincing people to get into debt to buy things they don't need, and tempting people in with promises of making everything better and eliminating all debt for you, and instead burying you deeper and deeper in the sh*t that you were already in if you had debts, or weren't and didn't need to be in if you didn't and only took out a loan because capitalism told you that your old car was no longer adequate and you NEEDED to buy the new model! Sorry, got carried away! ;D ;D ;D ;D

I don't understand that one either. As a tidy dub camper (even a bay) is gonna be worth more than a wibblepoo-ass Mk3 golf drop-top any day of the week....

that one where the volvos are next to each other does my feckin nut in (yes car credit i think) and they are so ashamed for owning that lovely volvo, and the other couple are looking down at them . its fine if you so wish to have a new car, just don't think that all of us do tbh, id rather have my car over anything i could buy (10 years or younger) triple its market price. people just don't get us do they?
