You know the stories, the tales you hear down the pub/garage/whatever about feats of massive mechanical ineptitude, that you'd never think anyone is actually stupid enough to have done.......
like for instance, not refilling a rear axle with oil after youve fully rebuilt it with all new bearings. like the previous owner of naomi's new landrover has done. as a matter of interest, it lasted about 80 miles before the pinion bearing welded itself solid.
anyone want to own up to something as stupid??

You mean something like leaving the idler gear out of a 1380 you've spent ages building for your Mini, then spending hours trying to work out why you can't get it to engage drive? No, never done anything like that

Like spending hours trying to work out why the welder isn't giving any gas without first checking that there's any gas in the bottle?
Me? No.....

Any car mechanics i've done is usually so anally planned that it goes ok (as I'm a compllete novice), i havnt got to the stage where i get complacent :-)
MTB mechanics - i've broken loads of things by rushing/not thinking :-)
Like not fitted the circlips properly to a pair of forks, and the legs seperating :-)

You mean like jamming a torch down the back of a Beetle's fan surround so you can see where you're feeding a new throttle cable through, then forgetting to take the torch out when you're done, and then two weeks later wreck the fan when the torch has worked its way right down the back of the engine and been ground up in the moving fan blades?
Nope, never done that....

Attempting to prove how spanner-savvy I was - by fitting an oil filter. With a chain wrench. And over tightening it. Put a tiny hole in the filter which then sprayed oil all over the brakes. Just in time for RR07! Happily a good soaking of brake cleaner ensured the car could actually stop again...

You mean like try to remove the type4 engine from a late bay-window VW panel van, without first checking what the differences are between a manual box, and an auto box when performing said removal? And then subsequently hanging the engine right out of the back of the van on a 3 foot splined bar, when in a manual version it'd just pull away and be free? And then just putting the engine back in, neglecting to check said splined bar was perfectly straight, and destroying the auto gearbox the first time it was fired up?
Naah, never.

Jack car up. Take wheel off. Wheel spins with brace. Lower car. Loosen nuts. Jack up again. Remove wheel. Sigh.

Anyone who works on cars will make mistakes and learn from them - it's the learn from them bit that is the key.......
A very good friend of mine had some running problems (misfires under load that seemed to occur around 2000 rpm on a regular basis) with a Senator 12V Auto and after driving it home one day pulled onto his drive, got out lifted open the bonnet and had a listen - that straight six was just sitting there humming sweet as a nut - so he gave the throttle lever a blip to 2000 rpm
He woke up at the back of his garage having been driven through the garage doors and all the kiddies stuff in the garage and was saved by a freezer on his left and a washing machine on his right at the back of the garage.
- neither of the white goods survived the assault by Senator
- he was just bruised
- the car was undamaged after some t-cut was applied to get rid of the scuff marks left on the bumpers and wings by the garage doors
Moral - if you are going to fiddle with an running engine on the drive ensure that it's in P or N and certainly not D - his drive incidently had a slight slope so it didn't creep in D

You mean pull over because the engine's running rough - pop the bonnet, check everything out, gently put bonnet down as the stay is missing before getting screwdriver out of the boot - raise bonnet, adjust carb, rest bonnet on its catch and return screwdriver to boot. Get in car and set off with nicely running engine. Give it some welly and watch as the unfastened bonnet rises up and back against the screen buckling the bonnet beyond repair? Nah, never done that!

Taken an engine out of a perfectly good working car, in attempting a complex engine swap in a short period of time, having never done one before. Running out of time and leaving said car useless for 9 months (estimation) with no engine...

Changed the sunroof mech on a Sierra, it had gone dark by the time I was getting to the end so I just dropped in the glass and decided to fit the screws first thing in the morning ....... you can probably work out what happened in the morning, yes I completely forgot I needed to finish the job and just jumped in and drove to work. Accelerating out of the 30 limit there is a loud bang I look up to see my sunroof glass flying away oops it also completely wrecked my replaced sunroof mech
|
|
I will get round to finishing it at some point

BC - that's seriously scary! And something for me to remember now I've got a motor with a slush box in it. I've actually already done something similar with the Volvo. Was about to hook the trailer up to it. Moved it forward a little and got out. Went to hitch it up but leant on the back of the car as I did so. It promptly drove off! Luckily, I'd left the door open so I was quickly able to leap in and hit the brake but I did feel a fool.
And this is silly too. Driving to work in my Acadiane (Dyane van), I got a bad misfire. I called the AA but decided to indulge in some home mechanicing and got the fan off ready to access the points box. AA bloke turned up, instantly spotted the HT lead resting on the exhaust manifold and just gave me that look. DOH!

Sounds like the time we put a rover v8 in my mates Mk1 Escort, complete with holley 4 barrel and a nice tall edelbrock air filter on top. Got it mounted, wired and running without the filter all was perfect. Before its first trip on the road we boshed the filter on, slammed the bonnet and wehey, a lovely new bonnet bulge the shape of the filter.

When I got my mini, the engine was seized. After taking it out, I eventually found the problem when I stripped it down. Underneath the flywheel cover, there was a locking wheelnut rattling around.
It was lucky it was there though. The flywheel bolt was barely finger tight. If I had managed to start the engine, the flywheel would have come off.
