I'm sure many of you also suffered driving a classic without A/C, perhaps with leather or vinyl seats, in 42c heat IN THE UK over the last couple of years. I did and I melted into the seat and felt quite ill a couple of times (I am increasingly old and pathetic, it happens).
My Pao has a lovely little A/C system that works surprisingly well. Unfortunately the car doesn't move at the moment for that's another story. The old Morrises obviously have no A/C other than opening the window... when there is not traffic.
Much like people take the Vauxhall Corsa PAS units because they're small and easily fooled into working from just a 12v supply and no ECU - is there a particular A/C setup it's worth ripping out of a modern car for a retrofit that doesn't cost thousands? Perhaps early Nissan Leaf units can be fooled in a similar way to Corsa PAS and do away with the need for a belt-driven system?

you can buy 12V compressors forvaroun £400 and car builder solutions do all the parts to fit a system in a kit for about the same, If you go the electric compressor route you will probably need a high output alternator as well, the compressors draw around 50A and you will need to allow another 10A at least for the fans.
I'm not aware of any car which uses a electric compressor, some refridgerated vans do though so it might be possible to find something secondhand, virtually all modern cars integrate the evaporator into the heater unit so you would have to fit all of that or take the evaporator matrix out and build it into the car somehow. Virtually any condenser on a end of life vehicle is probably scrap and it's highly unlikely any of the pipework will fit.

You obviously don't live in Scotland or you wouldn't be worrying about 42deg temperatures 🤣🤣 IIRC 35deg is the highest up here

If you were to go to Japan or Hong Kong you would see plenty* of Minis and Morris Minors which have been converted to have AC, I don't know what they are using but they are doing it...

They're not a very complicated system really. Quite a few cars used a AC pump with a V belt drive which would be easy enough to adapt to a old engine. I'd just do a scrapyard search for one of those, and then look in small cars for a suitable heater/Aircon unit that could be fitted. I think I used Pirtek to modify some pipes last time I needed them.

you can buy a usable crimping tool for around £150 and the screw on fittkngs are easy enough yo get, the biggest difficulty I have found is connecting to OEM components who generally use their own type of non standard fittings.

Weirdly a couple of weeks back, I had a Amazon sponsored ad on facache that was a universal a/c system for classic car's. I'll see if I can find it.
