I've been through something similar recently, with the added stress of time pressure on top of it. And honestly? Dealing with people is a nightmare, and going through all that stuff takes time, energy, and much more mental space than you'd initially expect. You could ebay or autojumble it, but autojumble season's passed now. Selling as much as possible as a job lot makes the most sense, and scrapping stuff does as well. Christ, one of the things that I sent to the scrap was a 1962 JCB, which will have loads of folk weeping, but those folks never put their hands in their pockets, soooo...

There was something similar recently with i want to say triumph parts on here? I'll have a search. If it's well documented as to what's what it may be something slipngripross might be able to offer an opinion on.

I remember an old garage / parts business closing down and they basically had an open day for a couple of days over a weekend. People came, took what they wanted and paid what they thought was OK. Some stuff would have been cheap. There was a LOT of stuff. Thing is to sell all that will take forever to get "retail" prices. Just better to sell what you can for what you can.

Fairly limited market/not particularly high value parts, and difficult access means you’d be lucky to get someone to come clear it at all. Realistically even scrap value would be good going, as there’s a lot of work removing that lot then making it sellable.

This.
If they want to get some money back, the best way would be to list items on eBay - probably an auction for the complete car and 'buy it now' for the other items (as these will be slow sellers but will slowly sell one by one over the course of months).

you good at spreadsheets?
time to make one
so as mentioned how quick do they need the property empty to be able to sell it this will determine what and when you need to sort this.
but getting everything listed and labelled is the key to move stuff on asap .. can you clear an area so you can start making the list and piling stuff ready to pack , labelling and listing on ebay asap or on here ?
i have done this on a smaller scale and it helps greatly if someone is willing to assist especially around the posting of stuff i.e. arranging couriers i always use interparcel who use loads of different companies so choices of cheap, quick, expensive etc.
imagine all the packing materials needed to post everything and add that in too.
where abouts is this as you never know someone may volunteer the odd day to assist or swoop in and buy a chunk of stuff
also the expectations of the widow .. do they think they are sitting on hidden gold or see it as junk and anything they get is a bonus ?
GOOD LUCK!

Fixed that for you.
Even if you do manage to find another person who thinks it's treasure, they will want to pay what it was worth to them about forty years ago, probably using the same banknotes they put aside for the purpose...

It's a huge ball ache to sort anything like that. We've got a absolute pile of stuff upstairs at work that has been collected over the years (from estate clearance and businesses closing etc) that if added up individually is probably worth 6 figures, but in reality is worth scrap money as it'd probably be 2-3 years full time work just to catalogue and list it all for sale, then another 10 years to sell it all. That's with basically "free" storage as the space isn't needed for anything else. If you'd have to pay for storage whilst it all sells then it gets on top very quickly

I would cherry pick as much as possible, stick it in a van, take it to an auto jumble, get best prices early in the day, then sell cheap, then everything a fiver, everything £2, then everything a quid, then just whatever you want for a quid. Then everything free. Anything that’s left just weigh it in.
Good way to get rid of everything and make a bit of cash.

It really is a nightmare - My Granddad died last April, and we are still sorting through all his stuff in a similar vein. There is stuff we want to keep, stuff that belongs to some of the vehicles that are there, stuff that was bought for those vehicles but doesnt belong to them (of you see what I mean), NOS stuff from when he was a VW main dealer, stuff that even having messed with VWs for knocking on 30 years I don't know what it is etc etc etc.
We've been going at it fairly steadily for over 18 months, and its still full of stuff! Luckily neither me or my brother are desperate to sell any of it instantly, so have the luxury of time to sort it, but even so, its getting on for 2 years since he died and sometimes it feels like the pile isnt getting any smaller!
Even with 'desirable' VW stuff, and trying to sell it for reasonable prices without scene tax so it goes quickly, its an absolute ballache dealing with (some) people, people who don't turn up, people who argue the toss, people who want stuff posting out even though you have said you cant etc etc etc.
If it wasnt my Granddads stuff, and if we werent 'interested' and if we werent trying to work out what projects etc we want to keep, from a purely monetary point of view, it just isnt worth it. I'm not especially hugely paid, and I would be way better off doing a day at work than sorting through, taking pictures, listing for sale even the more valuable stuff to be honest 90% of the time.
I would say if you are going to do it, do it because you are interested in the stuff, because you want to help out fellow enthusiasts, because you want to avoid stuff getting junked or whatever other reason you want to - don't bother doing it for the 'money' because the odd very desirable thing/vehicle aside, its almost definitely not worth it!

I'm in a similar boat on a smaller scale, i'm clearing out my spare parts for cars that i've completed and won't need or cars I don't own any more and some stuff sells quickly buy a lot of it takes ages to sell if at all, i've had some stuff listed for 12 months and then one day someone just buys it.
Its not the price that puts people off in the main, its that a lot of the time people don't need that part until they suddenly do and you just have to keep waiting for them.
Best thing to do might to be sort it by car/marque and sell it off as job lots as some people who are interested the model/marque might buy it get some of the parts and then sell off the rest to get their money back, i've done that a few times with my projects and its worked well.

In all honesty, that looks like a complete pain in the bum. Unless you’re getting paid for helping I would give it a wide berth. The property looks like it will have to go to auction, depending on who benefits from the sale will most likely decide if it's worth paying to clear it first or not. If the previous statements result in a we are going to sell stuff: Get a 8/10t skip and fill it with all the stuff that makes the most space quickly Bricks, you can always get rid of those quickly if they are free (done that before) Clear a large dry space and sort parts as moving them to the newly created storage - list largest parts for sale now. Get another skip and clear more stuff (repeat until everything is cleared) Do a scrap run Get a scrap man to remove the Cav I have a good friend who is a builder so he get's me skips & I pay £200 per 8t skip (I have had more than 20 of those over 3 house renovations) At a guess, your going to need 5+ skips. Or Get a van, fill it with anything that looks like it has value & send the house to auction as is & let the developer worry about the rest. Sorry if that sounds a bit blunt, but unless there is a sentimental reason to spend ages going through everything then the monetary value of doing it has to come first. Remember every month the property is sat, someone will have bills to pay. You also have those lovely little vandals to consider. Don’t even get me started on benefactors of deceased estates lol.

Thanks for all the input guys - to clarify, I'm just trying to sort the car stuff for her. She's already scrapped lots of old Cav parts apparently (including 6 cars). She just doesn't know what she's looking at and doesn't want to be too out of pocket with it all considering the bills that need paying. She also feels bad scrapping classic car parts.
I reckon the stuff I could list on eBay includes:
Herald chassis
Bond Equip front end
Triumph Spitfire bonnet
Spitfire doors and glass
Sand blasted steelies
Pairs of seats
Body of panels
Then the rest could be car specific job lots as I know there's a lot of Herald and Spitfire parts.
Thanks for all the suggestions - tricky situation!

Clearing estates like this can be an arduous task and often you do it simply to help a family rather than making decent money. I would a void ebay due to the large fees they take, often more than a normal auction house. When I assist on clearing estates I take 5% of whatever sells. Your best bet would be to itemise the parts into makes or models in boxes then send them to your nearest car auction that also takes classic car parts. If you have time to help them and the ability to sell the bits yourself just offer a 5% cut.
