Itasha is the name for that style [] Thanks Adam, The lines blur at times, but I love the singular devotion these owners approach their hobby with. And the details, fine little nuances, additions and mods, often missed by most untrained eyes. Sure, itβs not a 68 Mustang restoration, but as we know, all too soon these will be a stepping stone to the next level. This is a different car, on a different level, but I absolutely love what they have built here. Though not in Japan. Detail, detail, detail.

Though not in Japan. Indeed - pretty sure that's Brunnen in Schwyz, Switzerland. One of my favourite camping spots is high up in the mountains above that.

I agree, it's certainly impressive (mildly concerning?) the level of devotion the builders have to their particular character and the way they mod their car to represent that. The fact that the word itasha derives from a cringe or painful car suggests that they know themselves that what they do is cringey but they do it anyway, which is a brave move. It certainly helps when the underlying car has nice wheels, a good stance etc. Even before you chuck the graphics on. I suppose a similar thing in the UK would be the themed cars you see at shows sometimes, maybe a Marvel comics theme or the Joker from batman, they certainly make me cringe, but I don't appreciate them in the same way somehow π

It certainly helps when the underlying car has nice wheels, a good stance etc. Even before you chuck the graphics on. See thatβs what ruins these cars for me. Take a car, get the proportions, stance and fitment dialled, then totally bury it under a load of tat and graphics so you struggle to see it. When you have so much βdetailβ you canβt see the overall aesthetic, it just seems like a waste to me. Itβs a total sensory overload, and contrary to how to build a βgoodβ modified car. But as you say, with the name, I guess they kinda know that. But itβs essentially putting in a LOT of effort to make your car look worseβ¦.

Hi, I just think it goes to show that customizing is cyclical. Back in the 70s it was about lowering cars then in the 80s it was about jacking them up and now we're back to slamming them again. The same with paint jobs first it was straight paint schemes then geometric shapes, fantasy scenes by airbrushing then back to straight simpe paint jobs. Back in my youth my step-father use to say "there's nothing new in cars" and not sure I understood or agreed, but I can now.
It's not to my taste but that does not mean it shouldn't be encouraged. After all it's not the first time i've been called a grumpy old sod.

I donβt dislike it, but itβs just all a bit odd. But I guess thatβs Japanese culture full stop. All the faces on the graphics just remind me of Marine Boy π€£

All the faces on the graphics just remind me of Marine Boy π€£ A lot of faces in 70s children series looked like this. I remember Heidi, Sindbad, Marco, Cpt.Future, they all had these big eyes. Probaly some kind of japanese school.

Think this is one of those things where i might not like the final finished item I can appreciate the effort and quality of work that goes into them.

is that not a hustler? Looks smaller than a jimny? Well spotted. The jimny front doors have that weird characteristic shape below the window.
