There comes a point where you have to accept what you want to do and when. I you really don't feel like working outside or even inside when it's cold then don't. But also don't feel guilty or punish yourself fot it
We do this because we want to and these days want seems to be a dirty word.
There's nothing wrong with spending a cold evening indoors watching somebody on youtube doing the things you think you should be doing yourself.
The quickest way to kill your love of any enjoyable activity is to do it when you know you won't enjoy it.

I think it was Billy gibbons from zz top who said do one thing each day, even if it's just polishing a door handle, that way you've achieved something. I try, really I do....😁 Try polishing something other than a door handle for complete satisfaction.

That's one of the best arguments I've heard for having a project, you can always think 'sod this for a laugh', and walk away, knowing that you don't have to finish it to get to work in the morning. Of course, it's usually the daily that needs emergency attention....🙄

I've been struggling this year, really struggling. Normally I get a little bit fed up as the Winter months draw in, but this year I've honestly just wanted to hibernate. My enthusiasm for just about everything has evaporated away. On the 3rd of October the StreetKa Named Desire ran out of MOT, and as I've got several cars that needed MOTing around this time I figured that I'd just pop it into my garage, do a few more jobs on it over the Winter, and re-MOT it in the Spring. I haven't even opened the garage door since I put the thing in there, so much for getting a few jobs done before spring! I just can't be bothered. But it's not just that, it's everything, I've not been going out, not been watching the TV, not even been surfing the internet. I seem to have got myself in a proper funk this year and everything sees too much effort right now.

This year, I am suffering from a lack of car mojo, if I am honest, and I can see winter not helping. Oddly, before, Winter would be the time I'd get stuck in for about the last 3 years. I think it came about from going into a job, where folks are made to use their holiday over the Xmas break. From doing nothing, I started to work on the cars instead. A driveway warrior before, and then working from the comfort of a unit. That said, folks would then come and meet me, vice versa and so the routine changed. This year however, with many family events, both good and solemn (from the birth of my nephew, to what seems like several meetups with him, to many weddings happening, due to the Covid deadlock over 2 years, to a surprising number of bereavements recently, some very close to home), it's been a struggle to do anything during the garage time. What really doesn't help is having a double garage, where it looks like a bomb has hit it. The M3 would be a nightmare to get out now TBH. I planned to sort out the garage today, but I got dragged off to yet another family event, which basically wrote off the entire day (Midlands to Huddersfield and back in a day). That said, I am planning on working on the cars, and bringing that mojo back. The plan is -Get the new shelving up. I'm in the middle of doing this right now, hence why the garage is in a state. At least the floor will clear -Do something to contain the dust of the bare concrete floor better, until spring arrives, now I've made a decision on paint. -Improve my light situation ; buying more battens and setting up the battens that I have. I feel a question coming for this in the technical section... -Not help out my mates as much, unless they are stuck. A shame but it's annoying seeing my cars getting neglected. -Chuck the heater on I have inside. It doesn't get it toasty but it does take the edge off, which is more than I had ever. -Sort out the 325d issues, even if it's not all of the faults the car has. I can think of 3 I can fix now, including the sticky passenger door handle, The bluetooth module fix, which may enter a serious case of mission creep, as well as some rust proofing. -Do the M3's driveshafts. They've been sitting on a shelf for over a year. Before, I had far more enthuasiasm to start on a car. I think, when I had some traveller guys move into a unit next door to my old unit (combined with thefts from ours annoyingly), it dampened my mood, along with the awkward job i was doing the M3 at the time ; rear brake pipes for anyone wondering). But, despite coming across more issues, I chipped away until the car was running again . I was over the moon when it ran. I have you to thank for making this thread, as it's reminded me of how small steps are still steps in getting the car more ready to being fixe or on the road. As for what I've done over the years, that includes, walking back through the car ownership, as a means of reflection (and hopefully encouragement to anyone!) - 2009 - Destroyed the 205, getting too keen, too early - 2015 - Got the RS Turbo a little more standard inside -2016 - Helped a mate get his DS back on the road for a road trip- 2017 - Took the M3 up to the Dales to the Buttertubbs Pass, and saw some family- 2017/2018 (NYE) - Did the VANOS seals on the M3 and installed a trick Apple CarPlay/Android Auto headunit- 2018 - Ambitious in hindsight. I basically cured almost all of the oil leaks on the 2CV, down to removing the heads and fixing many bodges, threw in a 123 dizzy, fixed a bad wheel bearing, all done in under 2 weeks, just so I could drive it to Bicester in January 2019 -2019 - Prop refurbishment of the M3, and exhaust fixing while I was there - 2019 - Bought and tried to fix a Velosolex
-2020 - M3 rear brake lines and the exhaust fix. I didn't bank on this taking me 5 months!- 2021 - Detailed the ST220, inside and out. That was a week of evenings in a garage, with great resultsLooking at that list, maybe that's why I'm tired these days

I don't have any answers i'm afraid but I certainly think it's worth asking some questions.

From personal experience , anyone reading this that feels the same way should talk about it . If you don’t feel comfortable talking to family or friends, you’re doctor will sit & talk things through with you . 👍

I have really done anything worthwhile on my project for about 9 months. I have tidied up and bought tools but I have been doing other stuff.
I am getting to the point where I am starting to get that itch to go back in and do stuff. I shall fire up the Space Heater and give it a go. It'll be nice to get back on the little plastic lozenge again...

I've started taking Vitamin D3, early days but so far it does seem to have improved my mood and gave me a bit more motivation/desire to do things.

I think this is part of a general malaise in society after the last 2 years, a lot of people are feeling like this but cannot put their finger on the cause or just feel like something (everything) is wrong. I agree wrt to talking but I would stay well away from the Doc, their first resort will be a course of 'uppers' in my experience.

Tom I can second Vitamin D supplements, made a huge difference for me a few years ago when I was in a real rut. Nowadays I have a hi-vis bomber jacket from screw-fix that I wear over my boiler suit, keeps me cosy on the coldest winter days, I'd also recommended one of them for winter spannering.

While I get out plenty with winter maintenance, working with the sheeeeps, logging and keeping Bob the Dog exercised there are always practical projects. I bought this Arduino clone sci-fi adventure kit to try to keep the old brain sharp through the Christmas doldrums as the last programming I did was in Visual Basic. There is an alternative reason as I hope to use Arduinos to implement instruments for the Frankensnail. First up hopefully a 50k rpm rev counter for the free power turbine. As the temperatures are arctic also hoping to install a Chinese 8kW diesel air heater in the workroom at the Volcano Lair. Lots of peeps are using them for workshops and garages.

Deffo noticed this myself and in a lot of people I wouldnt ecpect it from. I myself suffer with Depression and anxiety and always tell people to speak to a Doctor if feeling this way (as above). But personally ive had no mojo for car shows this year, I've been to no gigs and cant put my finger on it.

In the Scandinavian countries, taking Vitamin D is something Doctors suggest to do.

Yes, you may be offered medication but it is always your choice. Modern antidepressants are very different to those of the past, and certainly nothing to be afraid or ashamed of.
