So I’ve been looking for my next build, I wanted another rwd smaller car with an mx5 engine conversion.
Well as we all know plans don’t always go right.
I’m aware of a cheap manual mk2 jag I can buy that’s not too bad.
I’ve always loved Grant Williams mk1 jag BUY1 they are awesome together. YouTube “grant Williams Jaguar” ….awesome
Anyway I’m thinking:
DIY: grey respray, bmw 328 engine/box, 16” steels, caged, buckets, noisy on a budget of about £7k all in.
Talk me out of it guys 😂

Sounds like something you should get on with immediately, in fact what are you doing on here when you should be out putting down a deposit and organising transport? :-)
You can't beat the style of the old jag and with a bit of go it would be fabulous. Although they can be expensive to do, if your prepared for a bit of work and don't want it concours you can make a lot of the repair panels yourself.
Have a look at my econojag thread if you want a bit of inspiration (albeit that one has a standard 2.4). Currently stands me in at around 9.5K, if I had been doing it as a racer then I could have saved a packet and a more modern engine and box would also help with the costs.

A bit more inspiration, this is my 3.8 in Pearl Grey;
This is the pair of them together (the 3.8 and the 2.4)
And this is the 2.4 in paint with a colour change:
Chuck on some better wheels, get rid of the wooden side board and leather arm chairs and stick in a roll cage and you would be in business!

I love this idea, one thought that may keep you out of the clutches of BIVA, might be fit a later Jag straight 6, find a supercharged one, and BINGO,

Do this. Do this with a BMW drivetrain to stick 2 fingers up at the purists and beards. I am a purist and a beard. And I still want you to do it. Pics, man, PICS!

The Jag engine is massive and a really tight fit. Fitting a BMW slant engine in the very narrow engine bay is going to be tricky.
Does it really need to be a six, when 200hp fours are common, cheap and easier to fit? Those are things to consider when planning any build, but are essential when a small budget is important.

Modernish BMW engine in a classic Jag? This is an ill-thought out, sat in the pub half drunk, idea of crass stupidity. You must start this project IMMEDIATELY

How about the Jag (Mondeo) V6 engine and box? Disclaimer - I have absolutely NO knowledge of either this vehicle or this engine 😃

289 or 302Cu in ford V8. Nice compact narrow engines, fairly short, plenty of grunt for racing, V8 for the win.

Like the Idea of a V8 I'm always up for a V8, of course theres the 2.5 Daimler Hemi, that was fitted as stock in the same shell, go one step further, use the Daimler Limo/Majestic 4.5 that would confuse a few, or even stranger keep the straight 6 theme,Lexus I200? or even a skyline engine

I say go for it! They are surprisingly fun to throw about, more than you'd expect when you look at the stately exterior. Engine swap Ideas... I presume the standard XK engine is missing / beyond repair? I only say because they sound great and can make plenty of power. I've researched many engine swap ideas for my Daimler (same engine bay, slightly smaller transmission tunnel), thoughts below: comfortablynumb, pretty sure theres no chance any modern DOHC v6 or v8 goes in without inner wing chopping, which puts you in BIVA territory for modifying the shell. I don't know if I've specifically seen the Jag v6 tried but the Jag v8s have been done and major work was needed. blackpopracing, a Ford 302 will fit (pretty sure its smaller than the Daimler v8), as will SBC. Seen both done online with what looks like no shell modifications. If I did ever go down the swap route, this would be my choice I think. v8ian, The Daimler 2.5 v8 isn't really very powerful without quite a bit of work, and they are getting thinner on the ground and more expensive than they used to be. The 4.5 is a very very rare old thing to find now and again prices reflect this! 1Jz / 2JZ, I've seen done and fit the engine bay proportions very nicely indeed. I've no idea what the BMW engines proportions are like, but the above thoughts might help guide as to whether it would work. They are about 1350kg as standard, or at least the Daimler is, so you'll want something with some torque to help make it feel spritely.

Barra. Not measured but size wise they look similar to a XK lump. There are a few Falcon funeral cars coming to the end of their life now as the parts to keep the Cara going are horrifically expensive.
