Contemplating a Volvo estate (850/early V70) as a retro tat hauler/camping wagon I've only heard good things about them! Plus bonus BTCC vibes! We've had Volvo's in the family since the 1970's....

I'd throw it in the pot towards fixing what I already have ! I'm with him. Other than that, grab a 106 while they're still about. I've noticed recently that they have really thinned out. I have a Quiksilver stagnating in my garage so was looking up used prices the other day out of interest and there wasn't one available anywhere on eBay, Gumtree or Autotrader. Frugal, pretty comfortable (apart from not having aircon) with great handling, even in povvo spec, they still make a fantastic daily.

In that budget I’d also look at the last of the escorts Still available for sensible money and the estate ones are very handy……in fact I’m convincing myself I need one once we’ve moved into our new house

I'd buy this. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/224475030558?hash=item3443c1241e:g:KpAAAOSwVNRgriD0 It's a Fiat so it will sound great when you thrash it, it weighs as much as a wet fart so it will be peppy, it has become increasingly rare on our roads and there are modified ones out there that look real good and will give you ideas. Maybe one of the last great Fiats. I think they are super cool!

This my fiesta Or I’d buy a W202 Mercedes I love this. It says everything about attention to detail and well thought out mods that have made it look absolutely superb. It proves that you don't have to spend small fortunes to make a car look just right. Something like that could be built for £1500, surely?

Last month I picked up a very nice Rover 75 1.8 with 12 months MoT and no major issues for a third of your budget. Go the full 1500 and you could have the 2.5 V6 version.

CAVALIER! You won't get a GSi or SRi for that money any more (or at least, not one you can drive straight away) but a good 2.0 should show you some change for improvements. Reliable, simple, cheap and easy to fix, timeless shape, relatively economical. And a Saab B204 turbo lump bolts in!

Good car but travelling to hospital in the rain when the wife was in labour with our first born the drivers side wiper decided to fall off. I was in charge of first born when he was about a year old, pulled into a petrol station and went to get something in the boot, central locking mechanism mounted to the boot lid for some reason when I shut the boot it triggered the locks and locked my son, and my keys in the car! Had to break into it to rescue him. That was scary. Went well for a diesel, mate of mine had a mk2 Sri and used to call mine a tractor until I sat on his bumper while he was flat out in the Sri. He stopped calling it a tractor.

I would like a New Shape mini - Mk1 Supercharged - definite future classic potential
There's one on Autotrader for 1500 quid ...
|
|
Some 9000's, a 900, an RX8 & a beetle

Despite not being a "proper" mini, they're supposed to be really good and as you say, quite obtainable too! I had seen the Escort but not the Thunderbird or the Astra! Who doesn't love a bit of risk!?

Thunderbird is just a different frock on the Fox chassis so all the Mustang bits are pretty much a straight bolt on. If that could be purchased for around the £2k- £1,800 mark, another £500 on a T5 and you have a very nice base to do all sorts of things in. P..
